Virtues (and guilt) of owning a Kindle

Since I just bought my Kindle yesterday, I'm probably not to be taken seriously as an expert, but I do have some first thoughts on owning this piece of modern technology.  First, it's fun and not too hard to get used to.  I love seeing a different portrait of a famous author every time I sign off (or put my machine to "sleep.")  It's like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates:  You never know "who" you will get on that author screen.  Right now I'm looking at Harriet Beecher Stowe.  She reminds me of my grandmother.

Must admit I went on Amazon last night and downloaded a bunch of free books.  How can I do that considering I'm an author and I should know the value of the written word.  But the authors themselves are offering their work for no cost, and I figure it's a wonderful opportunity to try authors I'm not familiar with.  Anyone I like I promise to go back and pay for another example of their "intellectual property."  But for right now I'm like a rabbit in the field with no scarecrow to frighten me off.  It's a buffet of delights.

So here's my question/topic.  What author have you found lately who really impressed you, and why?  Someone you haven't read before.  If your recommendation sounds good, I'm going back to the buffet and having a look.

First Venture into Kindle Land!

I know that many authors are seeing the emergence of e-publishing as a chance to offer their backlist on one or more of the popular new ereader sites. Many of my friends have already done so. Last month I decided to get in on the trend. My first backlist title, a book I'm quite proud of in now up on Kindle for $2.99. I've sold a few Hoo-ray! I didn't expect my life to change in any significant way. My experiment was mostly that – an experiment to see if a techie-deprived person like myself could accomplish the task. Now I'm working on putting the second backlist book up. This one is shorter and will be offered at $.99. If you wonder how I'm doing, follow along on this blog and I'll report in. I'd love to hear how other authors are tackling this new trend in publishing.
