(And thanks for joining me on Facebook.) I LOVE to read. But for the past 18 months, due to the wild political ride we've been on, I've been reading the news more than anything else. I'm obsessed with the New York Times and Washington Post with daily dips into the Dallas Morning News and the Los Angeles Times. When it comes to books, my mind is yearning for fiction, as an escape from politics, yet I find myself purchasing nonfiction, primarily memoir since that's what my next book will be.

But I just finished reading Gary Cartwright's "The Best I Recall," and I'm currently reading Jenny Lawson's "Furiously Happy."

On the to be read list are the novels "The Muse" by Jessie Burton (I LOVED her first book), "IQ" by Joe Ide, and "The Flying Circus" by Susan Crandal. I also plan to read the newest novels by Kathy Hepinstall and Laura McBride.

After that, I'll be heavy into memoir since my next book is a memoir. First on that list is "Dimestore" by Lee Smith and "She Made Me Laugh" by Richard Cohen. There are a number of memoirs that have struck my reading fancy, but their names escape me at the moment. (less)

What Makes A Memoir Stand Out?

As I have been doing for decades, I attended the Writers' League of Texas annual Agents & Editors Conference. If you're a writer who is eager to learn more about the craft and business of the publishing industry, this conference is one of the best thanks to its top-tier agents, editors, and authors who give talks, participate in panel discussions, and listen to book pitches.  This year, I partic Read more of this blog post »

“Jessica planned on having her very last Craigslist date the following night. "I just want to find a guy worth keeping in touch with," she said.

I thought about that. In fact, I thought about everything she'd written me. Everything so many had written me. All the talk of orgasms and lovers. Having many of one and unable to have even one of the other. Especially when it came to lovers -- the inability in both men and women to find that one person, that one partner, who totally "gets" you. No matter what anyone said, they 'all' seemed to want that.”
