From 1995: Russell Banks, novelist and moralist
Acclaimed novelist Russell Banks, author of such bestsellers as "Affliction," "The Sweet Hereafter" and "Continental Drift," died on Sunday, January 7, at age 82. In this interview originally broadcast on "CBS Sunday Morning" on June 4, 1995, Banks talked with correspondent Martha Teichner about writing of marginalized people, such as the characters in his novel "Rule of the Bone," and of capturing the "magical importance" in their lives.

Russia sending replacement Soyuz capsule to rescue International Space Station crew
Russia is launching a mission to rescue three crew members from the International Space Station. A Soyuz capsule which was meant to bring two cosmonauts and a NASA astronaut back to Earth was damaged after being hit by a micro meteoroid last month. Instead, Russia will launch an unpiloted Soyuz to the space station in February to return them to Earth. CBS News space analyst Bill Harwood explained the details of the mission.

The FAA is working to identify why a key safety system that sends alerts to pilots failed on Wednesday morning, prompting a ground stop that canceled and delayed thousands of flights nationwide. Bills' Damar Hamlin released from Buffalo hospital
Bills safety Damar Hamlin was released from a hospital in Buffalo, New York, on Wednesday, nine days after he suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed on the field during a football game. Hamlin was previously transferred from a hospital in Cincinnati to one in Buffalo. He was discharged Wednesday after undergoing "a comprehensive medical evaluation," the Bills said in a statement.

Search resumes for boy missing in deadly California floods
A search entered its third day Wednesday for missing 5-year-old Kyle Doan, who was swept away from his mother's arms by powerful flood waters near San Luis Obispo, California, on Monday. Most of California has received 600% of its normal rainfall in the past two weeks, according to the National Weather Service, as residents battle deadly flooding which has submerged homes and created sinkholes and landslides amid a series of powerful storms driven by atmospheric rivers.
