In A City

In A City:

In A City" by Tom Macarte

If I get lonely
in a big city

I like to ride trains

so that I don’t
feel so static.

I get a ticket for a day
maybe a map
and just sit going back

and forth, round and round
so that I feel like
I’m moving.

In Paris
the metro is always in motion.

And in London
the underground
a place without signal
or speech between strangers

just books and drumbeats
leaking out of headphones

careless commuters.

The circle line
is the best, you don’t even have
to get off

you can just orbit like a planet
the city a sun.

I feel more like a moon.

I don’t take a book
or a pen or a paper

or my mp3
I just soak it in.

The city, through tunnels,
down the escalators
the people rushing
pushing
plodding

and sometimes, if I’m lucky

one family, staring at everything
with wide new eyes

and I see too
the new things

or the old things, new.

RegularJOE (DIRECTOR) Feature Comment: “I really love this poem and how it reminds me of taking walks in cities. Everyone - use this beautiful piece of writing as inspiration and write about your city for the new “In a City” collaboration. Your writing could be about a unique experience you’ve had, a certain building you like to look at, or anything else that comes to mind. We’ll all be a part of writing this piece, so you don’t have to write a whole poem; you could just write a line or two.”

WRITERS & CINEMATOGRAPHERS: Come be a part of a new short film I’m making: “In a City”

GET INVOLVED HERE

They say a city isn’t fully experienced until it’s explored by foot. Just walking around, you see so many settings, situations, and characters that look like they came straight out of a movie. I like to get lost and just wander around w/ a camera capturing the cinematic experiences of everyday life.

For this project, we’re collaborating w/ Samsung Cameras & we’ll be sending out new ‪#‎NX1‬ cameras to 5 cinematographers to help make the short film.

==

WRITERS: Write some poetic thoughts about your unique experiences in your city - we’ll all be a part of writing this piece. Please refer to THIS POEM for inspiration.

Here’s some direction to consider:
* Maintain the tone & vibe of the original poem - your writing doesn’t need to rhyme and shouldn’t be sing-songy
Focus on the experience of walking in a city (not driving or riding the subway)
* Be specific. Write about your own unique experiences walking in a city.
* You don’t have to write an entire poem; you can contribute just a line or two (we’ll be remixing a bunch of the community’s contributions together into the final piece)

==

CINEMATOGRAPHERS: Shoot beautiful, cinematic shots of your city as you take a walk through it. Check out THIS FOOTAGE for what I’m looking for. Upload your footage by Thurs. 10/30 to be eligible for a #NX1.

Here’s some direction to consider:
* At some point during your shoot, turn the camera on yourself and film your face as you walk - but don’t look directly into the lens.
* The footage you shoot should be handheld and demonstrate the motion of walking - please don’t shoot with a tripod, slider, etc.
* When you upload your footage to the site, please include the best unedited clips from your shoot.

Attention everybody — I’m directing a new short film, come make it with me!

The film is called #inacity and it’s inspired by the experience of walking through cities - cities all over the world.  Through writing and video footage, I wanna capture intimate moments, beautiful textures and grand skylines.  But, the only way to tell the story of global cities is to get the perspectives of the people who live in them. No matter where you live in the world, I want you to be a part of making this.

For this project, we’re collaborating w/ Samsung Cameras & we’ll be sending out new #NX1 cameras to 5 cinematographers to help make the short film.
