SDCC2010 Sunday

As I went into the convention center this morning, I took a picture of this banner plane that's been circling over the con every day since I got here. Now there's a person who didn't get to see much of it!

Sunday is usually when the lack of sleep catches up with me, and this one was no different. I was dragging around the con in the morning, looking for things I might like to buy, and not finding much, which is probably just as well. There are always things I'm amazed to see here, though, and ...

SDCC2010 Saturday

This is going up late because I couldn't get internet access this morning. I suspect the entire town was just overloaded with e-traffic.

Saturday morning I spent more time wandering the Exhibit Hall. Arthur Adams was kind enough to give me a copy of his newest sketchbook, above, containing some of the cover art he did for the ABC comics we worked on together.

Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett were thrilled to report that the new Abrams hardcover of Paul's BOILERPLATE steampunk adventures was sold o...

SDCC2010 Friday Part 2

Saturday afternoon, taking a break from the Exhibit Hall floor, I explored the upper levels of the newest part of the convention center, an area I hadn't been in before. To get there, on a whim, I took the outside elevator that climbs at an angle beside the two stories of stairs. Kind of fun, but meant for wheelchair and disabled access, really.

Looking out the windows toward the east end of the convention center, I saw they're building a small suspension bridge for people connecting Petco...

SDCC2010 Friday Part 1

Back in my room for a late afternoon break before going out again to dinner and the Eisner Awards. I've got half an hour to post, so I'll begin Friday now, and put the rest up tomorrow morning. I took the Con shuttle bus down from my hotel today, saving my feet for the miles I'd be walking later. A bit slow, but it gets you there fine.

Before that I had breakfast this morning with pal Scott Hampton (right) and some of his artist friends, something I try to do every year. At left is Chris...

SDCC2010: Thursday

Got here without major problems, just a traffic tie-up on the way to the airport that I was able to detour around, and about 2:30 PM I was walking down through the gaslamp district to the convention center. I'm too tired to do much commentary this evening, so this will be mostly photos of things that caught my eye.

One of several new methods of Hollywood advertising I noticed was these huge ads on buildings. Looks like a few folks didn't go along with the deal on this one.

Got my badge without ...

Westward Ho!

Stolen from Heidi MacDonald's Twitter Stream, the San Diego Comicon floor today before opening.

I'll be leaving very early tomorrow, and if air travel goes as planned, will be at the Con some time tomorrow afternoon. I plan to blog the Con again this year, don't know if my first one will be tomorrow or Friday morning.

I'll have a few copies of each of my alphabetical signed prints in my bag during the show, so if you see me and would like to, stop me and buy one. Finding me will be the...

And Then I Read: STORIES

This thick hardcover containing over 400 pages of new stories is the second to be edited (or co-edited in this case) by Neil Gaiman, the first being "The Sandman Book of Dreams." Some writers seem to enjoy this kind of enterprise, while others avoid it, and concentrate on their own output. I think this anthology is an extension of something Neil likes to do: expose readers to new authors and material they might not have known about, and perhaps the same is true for his co-editor...

And Then I Read: MOVING PICTURES

Images © Kathryn & Stuart Immonen.

Diverging from their usual mainstream comics work, The Immonens have produced this small (6 by 8 inches, roughly) book for Top Shelf. Both the writing and the art are what I would call minimalist and arty, bringing to mind French cinema, film noir, and Woody Allen films of the non-comedic type. Taking place against a World War Two backdrop in Paris, it focuses on a young Canadian woman, Ila Gardner, who is working at a museum cataloguing and caring for...

And Then I Read: FIRST WAVE 1

© DC Comics, Condé Nast and Will Eisner Studios, Inc.

I like the idea of this book, bringing together some of the top pulp and comics heroes of the 1930s and 40s. I find it odd that they aren't named anywhere up front, nor is any background given as to who these characters are. Okay, maybe nearly every comics reader knows Batman by sight, and many readers might recognize The Spirit, but it's been a while since Doc Savage was in a DC Comic. Perhaps the idea is to draw in readers expecting new c...

Print Ordering Reminder

If you're thinking of ordering my new signed print, or any of them, and would like it sent out this week, please order by Tuesday evening. I'll be making a run to the post office Wednesday, then I'll be away at the San Diego Comicon for a few days, so any orders I receive won't go out until Tuesday or Wednesday of the following week.
