Communion on the Moon: July 20th, 1969

Forty-five years ago today two human beings changed history by walking on the surface of the moon. But what happened before Buzz Aldrin (pictured in the LM, left) and Neil Armstrong exited the Lunar Module is perhaps even more amazing, if only because so few people know about it.

I’m talking about the fact that Buzz Aldrin took communion on the surface of the moon. Some months after his return, he wrote about it in Guideposts magazine. And a few years ago I had the privilege of meeting him mys...

“What the Bird Said Early in the Year”

This week I’ve had the tremendous privilege of being in Oxford to shoot a small-group dvd series about C.S.Lewis, due out early next year. You can see photos here. I’ll be adding more each day. Today we shot behind Magdalen College, on Addison’s walk, where late one September night in 1931 J.R.R. Tolkien, Hugo Dyson, and Lewis took a walk. Tolkien got Lewis to consider the idea that Jesus’s incarnation, death, and resurrection were a myth that was also historically true. Nine days later, afte...

Holy Talkshow, Batman! It’s Dick Cavett!!!

DSC_0241 - Version 2

One of the true privileges of my life has been to befriend the great Dick Cavett, whose Emmy-winning tv show has been a major inspiration for Socrates in the City. I recently had the honor of speaking at a gala celebration of his career at the Museum of Broadcasting in Chicago — and was able to reprise Red Buttons’ famous “Never got a dinner!” routine. “Why!? WHY are we giving this man a dinner?!

My new book is finished! It’s a Miracle!

9780525954422_p0_v1_s600Have you ever wondered what a miracle is, or why miracles happen — or how miracles can change your life? What a coincidence — or is it a miracle? — because I’ve written a NEW BOOK titled Miracles: What They Are, Why They Happen, and How They Can Change Your Life. The book will be launched on Oct. 28th at a special Socrates in the City event with our first ever guest host, none other than tv legend and Emmy Award-winning talk show host, Mr. Dick Cavett! He will interview me here in NYC on the...

Bonhoeffer Never Said That!

Bonhoeffer CoverThis is how these things happen. AMAZING. What am I talking about? I’m talking about the fact that Dietrich Bonhoeffer NEVER said “Being a Christian is less about cautiously avoiding sin than about courageously and actively doing God’s will.” But it’s EVERYWHERE on the internet that he said that. But he didn’t. Who said it? Eric Metaxas. On page 486 of my Bonhoeffer book I sum up a theme of his and put it in those words. It is what I believe, but I came to put it in those words while writing...
