Retirement Journal—Day 99

As I near the century mark—Hey! It’s my retirement count, not my age—it was a good day. In fact, a wonderful day. Worry about my family and dear friends in Florida laid to rest, this morning I put a period on the last word of the last page of my new Emlyn Goode Mystery… Well, the last page of the FIRST draft of this novel. Still work to do on a second draft since, somehow, a page and a half of notes detailing things to adjust and add got pinned to the end of the manuscript. Don’t know how that happened; must be that Emlyn, Rebecca, or maybe that pesky cat sneaked onto my computer while I slept. Well, I’ll show them. Before I return to the next draft, I’m gonna work on a novelette for my publisher’s Holiday Anthology. Only have a few weeks to turn this out. Can I do it?

Also special, today was Thursday Coffee with Jim. Spot Coffee on Hertel Ave. I so look forward to this two hours each week. Talk about art (Jim is a fine artist) literature, films. Sometimes a bit of politics creeps in (Jim had just watched a film made in the mid-1930s that glorified Hitler’s Germany). Today Kim introduced me to a friend, a music Ph.D. student at UB, who, sitting over cappuccino at Spot, was composing music. Talk about stretching my mind! Of course, one in a while mu insanity sneaks into the conversation. Today wished me a happy birthday, and congratulated me on being 39. Without missing a beat, I told him I actually am 39, then went on to explain, my body knows it’s 71, but my brain thinks I’m still 34, and I behave like I’m 12. Add those together and divide by three… From the look on Jim’s face he was a bit concerned that this actually made sense to me. Oh, well. I never claimed to be shuffling all 52 cards.

This Keeps A Writer Writing

Ah, this is what I live for! Another 5-Star review for The Day the Music Died. This is what Beverly said about this novelette:

“A great Read! Another good one. I was sorry when it ended. I loved it and can't wait for another!”

Will you be the next to read it?

Day 84

As a writer, this was the kind of day I wait for, long for. Nothing in my datebook to distract me, I was at my computer, coffee and cigarettes at the ready, by 8:00. A sip from my mug, a first inhalation of smoke, then, as if preparing to conduct a choir, I raised my hands. And the voices flowed in harmony. By this, I mean the characters spoke their lies on cue, and the scenes developed. I typed what I saw and heard. So lost did I become in the story now that it’s past 60,000 words, and approaching the denouement, I forgot the time. Until, that is, my stomach began to growl. Only then did I look at the hour on the lower right of my screen. It was nearly 5:30. I hadn’t stopped for a meal.

I’ve been asked at times why I believe writing is what I’m meant to do. My answer is that I can’t imagine more perfect day than this.
