Betty Hutton grew up with her single mother and her sister Marion (who went on to sing with the Glenn Miller Orchestra). She sang in her mother's blind pig (an at-home speakeasy) and caught the show business bug at that time.

As a teenager she began singing with the Vincent Lopez Orchestra and appeared on Broadway in Panama Hattie. From there she entered the movies and her outrageous energy and multi-faceted singing voice made her just right for the wartime cry for escapism. Her most famous films include Annie Get Your Gun and The Greatest Show on Earth.

Following a nervous breakdown after her career fizzled, Hutton spent her time with the Catholic church.

She was married four times and had three children.
