This strip began as a daily on June 20, 1955 and ran until Aug. 31, 1957. A Sunday edition joined the fun four months into the run. I hope to eventually present the whole shebang, with about half of the Sundays in color. Continued Next Week!
Back in 1955, the Crockett gravy train was going so strong that even novelist Irving Stone jumped on board. This was five years before The Agony and the Ecstasy, but among his already published books were historical treatments of Andy Jackson and his wife Rebecca, and Abe and Mary Todd Lincoln. This piece appeared in the newspaper supplement The American Weekly in three installments, beginning June 5, 1955, and was advertised as "Davy Crockett for adults." (I posted this in its original format a few days ago, but the tiny type pained my eyes, so I'm presenting an easy reading version here.)
The 100-page Classics Illustrated Special Edition, BLAZING THE TRAILS WEST featured this chapter devoted to Texas independence. The art is credited to John Severin. Some of it looks a bit like him, some not so much. My apologies for the lousy image quality. This is the best I could find.
