Man Booker Nominee in Screaming Book of Horror
Alison Moore, who has a story in The Screaming Book of Horror, edited by Johnny Mains for Screaming Dreams Press, has been nominated for the Man Booker Prize for her debut novel The Lighthouse.

The Ninth Black Book of Horror
Pleased to see that the Ninth Black Book of Horror from Mortbury Press, edited by Charles Black, is to be launched at FantasyCon this September. Unfortunately I won't be able to attend but I hope the launch goes well. Stories in it by Simon Bestwick, Kate Farrell, Paul Finch, John Forth, Tom Johnstone, Thana Niveau, Marion Pitman, John Llewellyn Probert, David A. Riley, Anna Taborska and David Williamson. I can't believe it's reached the 9th volume already!

The Farmhouse - Two previously unknown publications in Italy
Dave Sutton is reprinting one of my earliest short stories, The Farmhouse later this year in the retitled New Writings in Horror & the Supernatural, Horror! Under the Tombstone. What I didn't know till today is that this story was translated into Italian and published there in two anthologies in 1989 and 1994 as La fattoria.

The Screaming Book of Horror - first review
The forthcoming horror anthology, edited by Johnny Mains, The Screaming Book of Horror (due from Screaming Dreams Press) has had its first review. Thankfully, it's favourable!
Halifax Ghost Story Festival November 17th-18th 2012
It looks as if there will be another Halifax Ghost Story Festival this year, the third in succession, which is great news after just how good the earlier ones were.

Poorly Printed Small Press Book
I'm not going to name the author, title or publisher, but I recently received a small press short story collection through the post and, quite honestly, if I had been the publisher I would have sent it straight back to the printer with an angry message.
It must be one of the worst printed books I have ever come across. The pages have been gummed in a most peculiar way, both too tight, so that the book is difficult to open, and unevenly, so that the parts of the pages nearest the spine have wrinkled. It is not a pleasant book to read, not because of anything the author has written, but because it is difficult to hold open and creaks in protest when you leaf through it. On top of this a small number of the pages near the middle jut out along the outermost edge like a blunt knife blade.
No printer's name included in the book, but definitely someone to avoid.
Which is a real shame, both on the small press that is trying to get itself established and on the author who, if their copy is as bad as mine, can hardly feel satisfied with what they have got.
As I say, the publisher really should not have been willing to accept such sloppy work from the printer and should have had the guts to send any copies like this back to them. I just hope mine is an aberration, though I doubt it.
