My friend Ed Gorman

I met Ed back in 2007, when my partner and I moved from L.A. to Iowa. It was a hard transition, and I’m not sure I would have been able to make it without Ed’s friendship.I was a fan before I met him. When I was in high school in the late 80s-early 90s I became interested in paperback crime fiction, particularly 1940s-1970s stuff. A lot of the best stuff was coming back into print at that time,

The Toy Story Trilogy: Getting emotional about corporate anxiety

Watching the three “Toy Story” films back-to-back provides roughly the same experience as when you’re forced to
sit through an hours-long corporate meeting at which a compelling,
entertaining, but ultimately hollow speaker hectors you about how much
more you could be doing to help the corporation succeed. And then
telling you that, for your efforts, you should expect nothing more than

Donald Trump- the first president of the social media era

More employers are turning to social networking sites to find additional information on potential candidates – and they’re not entirely impressed with what they’re seeing.

The quote above is from a Career Builder post from 2014 about how employers scan the social media accounts of applicants, looking for disqualifying information, including things like “provocative or inappropriate photographs

Kolchak: Day of the Demons is listed in Diamond Previews right now!

Check out that beautiful Dan Brereton cover!

The Kolchak graphic novel that I scripted, Day of the Demons, is listed in the current Diamond Previews, so if you want to be sure to have a copy when it hits the bookshelves on November 30, head down to your favorite comic book shop and place your order.

The story, which was concocted by myself and legendary Ed Gorman, involves the

Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston: Not exactly a love connection

In early June, the world was shocked to discover that the singer Taylor Swift and her boyfriend of more than a year, Calvin Harris (sorry, I don’t know what he does), had broken up. On June 14, 2016, E! News reported Ms. Swift was going to spend some time getting to know someone very special— herself:

As for speculation that the "Shake It Off" singer is already looking to start fresh with a

Think piece: Calling out the casual misogyny of that X-Men: Apocalypse billboard

In response to overwhelming criticism, 20th Century Fox recently removed a billboard that showed a shocking act of violence directed at a woman by a man. I’m posting the image here purely for illustrative purposes. TW to anyone who is sensitive to the impact of images of gendered violence on our society:

In the image above you might think you are seeing one fictional blue-skinned mutant

New journalism, by me: Meet the start-ups that are thriving in the current economy

Over at When Falls the Coliseum, I posted a new piece about start-ups thriving in the current economy. Here's a sample:

SURPRISE! DINNER: Food delivery services are all the rage—even for the
budget-conscious. That’s where Surprise! Dinner comes in. Their network
of reasonably-compensated employees rummage through the leftovers of the
customers of Fresh Direct, Peapod, Magic Kitchen, Hello

Senator Surprise webcomic

Can a comic change the world? No. Can a comic make you wish the world were different? Perhaps -- if so, Senator Surprise is that exciting comic!

Set in the dark and disturbing early 1970s, Senator Surprise tells the story of Little Saturnin Surprise, Jr, the Transcendental Democratic Senator from the great state of Louisiana, who uses his powers of occult magick, voodoo, and Catholic mysticism

Is the J.J. Abrams novel S a rip-off of Whimsical Doctor Shoe?

The answer to the incendiary and crackpotty question in the title of this post is, "Probably not. I'd be shocked if it was."

But. From the Mulholland Books website:

At the core of this multilayered literary puzzle of love and adventure
is a book of mysterious provenance. In the margins, another tale
unfolds—through the hand-scribbled notes, questions, and confrontations
of two readers.
