First Draft Complete
So I’ve written a book. My working title is “Black as Knight”. It’s basically Lies of Locke Lamora meets Batman Year One.
It was a book that wasn’t supposed to happen. It was a book to test new processes I put in place. It was a book I wrote as I clawed myself back from disaster following leggedon last year.
It’s also the longest book I’ve ever written coming in at around 154,000 words (and I tend to under-write in a first draft)
But… it’s also been the easiest book to write and the most fun des...

Sword Play
So what I really want to write is a blog post about is how busy writing I’ve been and how I’ve finished a draft of a huge book and how I love it very much. But that blog post is probably a week off. So instead I’ll talk briefly about the challenges I’ve set myself this year.
2014 is going to be filled with adventures. Some are personal challenges – so personal in fact that no-one other than me knows about them. I like the idea that no-one is able to encourage me and instead I have to rely on m...

Oregon 650 Review At GPSTracklog
Over at GPSTracklog this month I’ve written a review of the Oregon 650 Handheld GPS device purely from the perspective of a geocacher. This is Garmin’s top of the range device but as I discover, you may encounter some problems with it as a cacher. Worth a read if you’ve been thinking of upgrading recently. Be sure to check out the full review

The 2013 End Of Year Review
In many ways I should look back on 2013 as a shit year. It challenged me in ways I could never have imagined. But in reality, I think it was actually a really good year. The universe decided to throw everything it possibly could against me… and it lost.
Leggedon was a defining moment and I surprised myself with how I reacted. If I’m being honest, I would have pegged myself as someone who when faced with overwhelming adversity would have turned away. But I didn’t (probably more out of stupidity...

From NaNoWriMo To Beyond
I suppose the good news is that I won NaNoWriMo. Yay! The bad news is that this, along with stuff I did before, takes me to around 80,000 words, and given the length of the chapters I reckon this draft will come in around 160,000 – 180,000 words.
For the most part this has been the most fun I’ve had writing a novel. There were a couple of chapters a week or so ago where I felt a bit unsure of what I was doing and whether this was actually any good, but those times come during the course of a d...

An Update On What I’m Working On
So in the last couple of weeks I’ve had a number of people ask me what I’m working on and when the next book is out. So I thought I’d give an update.
For all my jokes, Leg-gedon lost me a lot of time. I really had to focus on so many things – building the strength of the leg back up, ultra restrictive diet, etc. – that I lost a lot of creative energy. I realise that sounds a bit wanky but sitting at a desk with one leg outstretched and elevated really isn’t the most comfortable position to wri...

The Short Story Challenge
I’ll let you into a little secret: I struggle with short stories. Really I do.
It’s not that I can’t write them. Jetsam got some of the highest praise (hello, honorable mention, year’s best horror). It’s just that I seem to be so hit and miss with them. I’ve been thinking about this recently and I came to the conclusion that my problem is that I often try to write stories I can cram into 7000 words rather than actual short stories and one is not always the other. In the last few months I’ve w...
