Shirley Jackson Award–Best Short Story

IMG_1056

So, while I was sitting on a beach in Whitstable enjoying a beer on Sunday, I found out I had won the Shirley Jackson Award for Best Short Story for my story “The Dying Season” that appeared in Aickman’s Heirs, edited by the fabulous Simon Strantzas and published by Mike Kelly’s Undertow Publications. This is an amazing honor, as was the original nomination–I genuinely did not expect to win and am just thrilled to have done so. Also, the anthology itself won the Best Anthology award.

The res...

Advance reading recs

I’ve had the pleasure of getting sneak previews of a couple of things coming out soon, one ashort novel and one a novella.

sentinels

David Longhorn is the editor of the well-regardedSupernatural Tales magazine [disclaimer: yes, I have had a few stories published there] and his debut novel proves that he’s as adept at storytelling as he is at selecting stories. Sentinels is the first of a trilogy and has the same old-fashioned feel to it as a Jonathan Aycliffe novel (and here I mean “old-fashioned” as...

Dublin Ghost Story Festival

This summer, over the weekend of August 19-21, I’ll be at the Dublin Ghost Story Festival in (where else?) Dublin, Ireland, the city of Bram Stoker and J. Sheridan Le Fanu (among others) along with many luminaries: Guest of Honor Adam Nevill, Toastmaster John Connolly, and assorted guests David Mitchell, Angela Slatter, Sarah Pinborough, A.K. Benedict, Paul Kane, Marie O’Regan, and John Reppion. Oh, and also me. Tickets are a mere 30 for what should prove to be a brilliant weekend of spooky f...

A horror mixtape with Mark West

Last year, writer and all-around good guy Mark West curated a blog called King For A Year in which writers and readers went back and reread (or in some cases, read for the first time) a book by Stephen King and wrote about the experience. It was great fun for all involved, seeing what was up each week, and I went back to Carrie, a book I hadn’t read since I was a teenager. So, needless to say, when Mark got in touch with me proposing a much smaller project, I leapt at the chance to join in.

T...

Shirley Jackson nomination

Hey! I am remiss in announcing this news here, but I’ve been nominated for a Shirley Jackson Award for my short story “The Dying Season” fromAickman’s Heirs! I was super excited to be included in this book in the first place because Aickman is one of my primary influences and because it is such a terrific book with excellent contributors, edited by Simon Strantzas and published by Mike Kelly over at Undertow Publications. And furthermore, Shirley Jackson is another one of my biggest influence...

Things that are and things that shall be

aickman1-200x300

That’s just a portentous way of announcing that I have a lot to announce: some stuff is coming out that I can now talk about, and some other stuff is already out.

First, get yourself on over to Nightmare Magazine because the fine folks there have allowed me ramble on at length about things to do with the South and horror: Southern horror writers and growing up in the South and how that has shaped me as a writer and as a writer of horror fiction. You can read “The H Word: The Dirty South” for...
