Writers' Workshop Done and Done!
I want to thank all the writers who attended my writers' workshop on Saturday, "Insider Secrets to Publishing your First Novel". We had a great turnout for a good cause-- Camden Friends Building Fund. I hope that everyone who attended left with a few tidbits of information they can use to take that next step in getting their book published. I had a great time talking with everyone. Is there anything better than a room full of writers?
As we were leaving, someone asked me the one book on writing I would recommend. There are many great books out there, but I would say read Stephen King's On Writing. I think a 10th anniversary edition was just released.
And while you're there (warning, shameless plug alert) take a look at Just Like Other Daughters. I'm getting great reviews, which I have to confess thrills me. I've been writing all these years and suddenly I'm getting noticed. It's little bit like going to the senior prom in a pretty dress . . . after you get your braces off. See Andi's review on Bringing the Sunshine. Andi has a son, Nathan, with Down syndrome, so her positive review of my book means a lot to me. I'm so glad I was able to share the essence of my Chloe with readers.
And now, after a week of preparing for the workshop, and promoting Just Like Other Daughters, it's back to work, doing what writers do. Write.
Happy Veteran's Day!!

Just Like Other Daughters is now available!I'm so excited about the release of my new book. It's a first for me in many ways. This is my first women's fiction novel after writing romance, mystery and suspense for many years. The book is also told in first person, which I found to be challenging even though it was the right way to tell this story. The reader hears the mother, Alicia's point of view, but also catches glimpses of daughter Chloe's thoughts. Chloe is a 25 year old woman with Down syndrome. When Chloe falls in love, Alicia struggles with trying to protect her daughter, while giving Chloe the freedom she deserves. And everyone deserves to love and be loved. The book is about the love between parents and children, but also the love between friends, and between mentally challenged adults.
Praise for Just Like Other Daughters:"This deeply moving story of maternal love and renewal will touch your heart. It's a celebration of the capacity of the human heart to heal itself and embrace change, beautifully written with rare insight." Susan Wiggs, #1 New York Times bestselling author
"Be prepared to weep tears of sorrow as well as tears of joy. This is a novel you won't soon forget."Holly Chamberlin, author of Last Summer
Just Like Other Daughters as so real, so honest . . . I laughed, I hoped, I cried. It's that good."Cathy Lamb, author of Henry's Sisters

Rainy Day and Wednesdays . . .What is it about rainy days...
Rainy Day and Wednesdays . . .
What is it about rainy days that make us want to curl up with a book? In my case, it's curling up to write a book rather than read one. It rained most of the day in Delaware, today, and I did get my goal-pages written, but I also took the time to discover some interesting facts about rain. These are in no particular order and I can't swear by any of them-- who knows? I read it on the Internet.
*It has been known to rain animals, mostly fish, sometimes frogs . . . and the occasional bird
*The heaviest average rainfall (about 430 inches) occurs in Cherrapunji, India where they've been know to get as much as 87 feet in a year . . . yes, of rain
*Umbrellas were originally created to protect us from the sun
*Raindrops don't fall in a teardrop, but in a flat oval
*In the movie Singing in the Rain, Gene Kelly is dancing in a mixture of milk and water-- it showed up better on film

Last week I had the honor of meeting Sharon Simons, author of MOM AT LAST. Coming from a family with adopted siblings, nieces and a new daughter-in-law, the subject of adoption has always been close to my heart. I've always thought that parents who give up children for adoption make the greatest sacrifice a parent can make; it's a truly a selfless act of love. And those of us who receive that gift, that precious child, not born of our bodies . . . The thought brings tears to my eyes.
Anyway, if you love adoption stories like I do, you need to read Sharon's book. She delves into the heartbreaking subject of infertility, sharing her personal journey and then the journey she and her husband Rick, make to Siberia. She brings home not one son, but two. You have to read this book!!

My mom, Judith E. French, and I are doing a Writers' Work...
My mom, Judith E. French, and I are doing a Writers' Workshop to benefit the Camden Friends Meeting House building fund. They have a gorgeous 200 year old church that's always in need of repairs and upkeep. I'm looking forward to the workshop as it's been ages since I did one of these. We'll be talking about some of the "tricks" or "secrets" to getting your first book published. Of course there aren't really any tricks or secrets-- the information is out there. You just have to find it. When I started out in this business, unpublished, I was willing to do just about anything or pay anything to talk to a real, live author. And so many authors helped me. Without their knowledge and support, I don't know if I would have ever sold that first book. So, while this workshop is a fundraiser, I'm doing it out of love for my craft, and in the hopes that I might be able to help another writer. I can send info to anyone who's interested. My first foray into blogging.
Bear with me . . . Author and dear friend, Donna Fasano (USA Today Bestselling author!) said it was time I started blogging. I've been thinking about it for months. I don't know how to blog. What would I say? You'd think that because I write novels . . . have been writing/selling books for the last TWENTY-EIGHT years that this wouldn't be a daunting task. I'm mean, seriously, when I started out all those years ago writing historical romances, the books were 110,000 words or even longer. I'm talking 500 typewritten pages. (I wrote the first book I ever sold on a typewriter) I've had more than 80 full-length novels published. (I don't know how many-- I'll explain in another post) If you do the math, 80 some books at 55k-110k words per book . . . well, you get what I'm saying. I've written a lot of words over the years.
But this is a different media. A different forum.
So here I go. After many, many years, and more than a few pseudonyms, Colleen Faulkner has been resurrected. JUST LIKE OTHER DAUGHTERS will be released November 1. I'm so excited to see my name in print again . . . and I'm excited about this book. More later . . .
