Filling Up

One of the most exhilarating and yet at the same time frightening challenges of my job is waking up every Monday morning to a blinking cursor on an empty page. If you write a blog or speak publicly on a regular basis you know the scenario I’m describing. It’s hard to communicate fresh, challenging material on a daily or weekly basis.
I don’t have the luxury of writing messages, books, or blog posts when I feel inspired or excited to write. I’m always on a deadline. And I don’t know if you’ve noticed this or not but Sunday comes around with amazing regularity.
That said, I’ve recently had a bit of a breakthrough of sorts. When in a creative communication slump I’ve often thought of it as a “block.” If you camped outside my office long enough you would probably hear me yell in desperation, “I’ve got message block!!!”
But that’s not really true.
Anne Lamott said, “The word block suggests that you are constipated or stuck, when the truth is that you’re empty.”
“Stuck” suggests that you need to try harder.
“Empty” prompts you to fill up.
Understanding my communication slump as the result of being empty gives me the permission to engage in the activities that fill me up.
Watch a movie.
Take a walk.
Play with the kids.
Call a friend.
Pray.
Read.
Nap.
Laugh.
And this is working a lot better than “trying harder.”
What do you do when you hit a slump?
What fills you up?

Do You See This Woman?

Take a moment today and think about this. How do you see people?
Do you see people as Christ did- not for their sins or for who they are today, but for who they could be tomorrow?
Are you judgmental?
Are you constantly comparing who sins more?
Jesus taught us how we should view each other. Not because of our sins or because we’re so well behaved but because of what He did for us.

Do You Know The Difference Between Trusting & Pleasing?

I think there are two fundamentally different paths you can take on the Christian journey. One is the path of Pleasing God while the other one is the path of Trusting God. There’s a huge difference. I”ll explain in the video below.

Money and Peace

Deep down in each one of our hearts is a place that yearns for peace. We often feel
rushed
stressed
spent
restless
anxious
but what we really desire is peace.
I once heard Andy Stanley ask a question that stayed with me. He said, “Do you have money in the bank, but no peace in your heart?”
In the past few years I’ve been to some of the poorest places in the world like Haiti and India. I’ve watched families mix mud, salt and vegetable shortening to cook over an open fire to prepare what they call a “dirt cookie.” Realizing the dirt cookies had no nutritional value they would eat them hoping they would momentarily squelch their hunger pains.
And yet let me tell you something about those families. Most of them have more peace than those of you reading this blog right now.
Why?
Because there is no correlation between money and peace.
Zip.
Zero.
Nada.
Get, earn, save, and invest all of it you want… but you’ll never squeeze an ounce of peace out of it.

You Are His

I’ll be honest.
Sometimes I really wonder how God feels about me.
Sometimes I wonder if I’m enough for Him or anyone else for that matter.
Like many of you, I doubt God’s thought process in the way He designed me and the gifts He’s given me.
We all need to be reminded from time to time that we’re no accident. God knew we needed “you” in this universe.

The Blame Game

It’s not a new game.
Adam played it.
Eve played it.
I’m so guilty of wanting to play the “blame” game. And few things hold me back from becoming the person God created me to be than this.

When You’re Feeling Out of Balance

What do you hold onto when you feel like life’s falling apart? Who do you look to? Where do you run? What holds you up?

In Plain Sight
Last night in Nashville the documentary “In Plain Sight” premiered and I’m honored to be a small part of this work.
IN PLAIN SIGHT seeks to raise awareness of the thousands of women and children who are forced, coerced, or deceived into the commercial sex trade each year in the United States.
From Sacramento to Little Rock to Nashville, learn about what’s happening “in plain sight” in our own backyard, and meet six modern-day abolitionists who are fighting to bring an end to sex trafficking in our nation.
This fall, In Plain Sight, is premiering in a few select cities in preparation of a 100+ nationwide screening in January 2015 for National Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Click HERE for more information on the documentary and how you can make a difference.

The Difference Between Busy and Hurried

There’s a difference between being “busy” and being “hurried”. Jesus was “busy” but I challenge you to find a place in the Gospels where he was “hurried”.
