National Geographic has been around sharing the beauty of the world since 1888. Novica was created in association with National Geographic to give artists and artisans around the world a chance express their unique talents and give us an opportunity to have access to hard to find home décor, unique gifts, corporate gifts, green gifts, microfinance, fair trade corporate gifts, and more.
I love and believe in supporting artists around the world. I was born in Panama and while we lived there my dad flew helicopter missions in the jungles of Honduras. After one mission he returned home with "Kimosante" his new wooden Indian statue carved entirely out of wood. He stands about 4 feet tall. My dad tells us the story that he walked up a mountain and found an old man selling his carvings. He loved this particular one, bought it and carried it on his shoulder on the way down.
I believe everyone deserves an opportunity to make money with their talents and I love that Novica supports worldwide artists. When I made my purchase at Novica I was happy to see that an artisan story card will be included. The shipping prices are very good.

One of the pieces of jewelry I bought was by a young girl named Putu Putri. Here is her story:
"My name is Putu Putri, the first child in my family. As most families in my village do, mine has worked with silver for several generations. My parents and grandparents are quite well known in the village, because their designs are highly regarded and the quality of their work is admired. They deserve the good reputation they have acquired because of their hard work.
"This year (2006), is my first year studying at Udayana University, majoring in Economic Management. I choose to study this because I want to learn more about marketing, to support the venture I have started. I hope I will be able to finish my studies, so I can make my parents happy as well as setting a good example for my younger brother and sister."
Check out this video of a silversmith who sells her jewelry on Novica.
