Adult Beverage: Hoptologist DIPA
One of the risks in reviewing adult beverages: a high ABV may lead to a missed review. That's what happened with Knee Deep Brewing Company's Hoptologist DIPA, which I purchased, photographed, and enjoyed a couple weeks ago, but forgot to write a review. At 9% and 102 IBU, this one packs a wallop, so in the interest of SCIENCE! here's a second attempt:
Hoptologist pours bright, clear, golden amber with a thick finger of off-white creamy head. Notable retention; thin tentacles of lacing on the glass. Roast caramel, citrus, and grass on the nose; a little skunky, but floral and bright. Big bitter bite up front; hops, caramel, and toasted brown sugar on the tongue. Hops, citrus, and pine attack the palate as it warms. Almost overbearing. Boozy-sweet. Dry, bitter finish. Insanely bitter, but tempered well. A standout among Cali DIPAs.

Adult Beverage: Wreck the Halls
The Holiday season is here, evidenced by the lit-up tree in my living room, the boat parade tooting along the Petaluma River, and Jennifer's stockpile of toy donations preventing me from accessing my turntable and bookshelves T through Z. Christmas chaos... not to mention carols, shopping, and panic... will soon be unavoidable.
So tonight, in honor of the impending Saturnalian madness, I'm knocking back a Full Sail Wreck the Halls, a "sublime hybrid of an American IPA and a winter warmer."
Wreck the Halls pours a ruddy amber with a full finger head with nice retention and a habit of marking the glass with sticky spiderwebs of lacing. Skunky, funky, grassy hop nose, pine and malt sugar, bitter lemon, and orange zest. Citrus on the tongue: Christmas orange, grapefruit, and a touch of peach on top of sweet caramel and malt and bitter piney hops. Thin mouthfeel, but very drinkable. Light carbonation. Long-lasting dry, bitter finish with suggestions of cinnamon and coriander. Gets right what last night's Adult Beverage got wrong.

Adult Beverage: Boatswain Twin Screw Steamer Double I.P.A.
Friday night seems to be as much about celebrating the things you managed to get done over the course of the week as it is about recognizing that there were a few things that just plain aren't going to get done, things that are just going to have to wait for Monday.
In that spirit, I'm marking this Friday night with a Boatswain Twin Screw Steamer Double I.P.A., a $2 bomber from Trader Joe's. Apparently, this is a TJs repackaging of Wisconsin's Rhinelander Imperial Jack Double I.P.A.
Twin Screw Steamer pours pale amber, with a couple fingers of tan head that dissipates quickly, but leaves a scattered lacing on the glass. Hoppy, malty nose, with a wet, woody, earthy undertone. Malt sugar on the tongue, too sweet, tempered and complemented by hop bitterness, but ultimately dampered by an overwhelming wet, medicinally boozy, coppery flavor. Floral, perfumey tones emerge as this one warms. Light to medium body--a little watery--and not particularly complex. Sweet finish, with a lasting, citrusy roof of mouth bitter aftertaste and a little bit of metallic face cramp. You won't mistake this for a West Coast hop bomb. Not bad for a couple bucks at Trader Joe's, but not a great IPA by any means.
