The trouble with Heartsblood

A couple of years after I published my first novels, I had a wild idea I wanted to write, but felt like it didn’t really fit into what people expected from me.

I decided to publish it under a pen name. It was an experiment as well, because I was really curious about how my books would be received when people didn’t know it was me writing them. Having a pen name was freeing and I wrote a whole bunch of more adult and crazy stuff under that name.

But having a second secret pen name was also a lot of work, too much, and I got tired of it.

I made the plan last year of republishing those novels under my own name (with some slight edits). I removed them from sale everywhere, gave them new titles and new covers and re-released them mid last year as the Heartsblood series.

I said goodbye to my pen name for what I thought was forever.

All well and good, until I got a notification from Amazon in November saying they had removed one of the Heartsblood series, because apparently they don’t allow a book to have the title and author changed and be republished. Oops. They also told me I had to remove the rest of the series too.

This is because it can cause confusion for readers, who may not realise they had already bought or read the book under the previous title information. I can totally understand their reasoning there.

So the Heartsblood series hasn’t been available as ebooks on Amazon for a few months now. I tried to get answers from them about the best and correct way to make the series available again, but got no response.

I’ve gone ahead and made my own efforts to make it as clear as possible now that the Heartblood series are republished, and what their previous title and author were. So if you were ever curious what my pen name was, you can now see that it was Lena Fox.

Here’s what the series used to look like, the Vampire Temptations series.

And here is how the covers now appear on Amazon, featuring myself and my previous pen name, and even the previous title included, just to be safe.

So that’s that, my secret pen name out in the world to see! It doesn’t really matter anymore, since I’ve brought these books under my own name anyway, and the only other book(s) I wrote as Lena are also out and available exclusive to my subscribers (What was The Bucket List, Forever List, and Ever After List, now available as one book called Everything Left Undone).

It feels strange being so open about a name I kept secret for almost ten years.

Anyway, now I just have to keep my fingers crossed that all remains well with Amazon (their terms are somewhat vague and applied arbitrarily).

Just in case you were wondering why the Amazon ebook versions have slightly different covers than through other stores, and who Lena Fox is, now you know the story about why!

2021 Wrap up

Last year I wrote that my plans were “Clean up, cataloging, consolidation, and celebration.” I said, “This might look like combining my selinafenech.com and fairiesandfantasy.com websites together, or bringing my novels published under a pen name into my main range.”

And yep, I did those things! I got this new website up and running, combined my pen names, and I celebrated ten years in publishing!

It has been a long year. Everything that happened before July feels like it was ten years ago! But all things considered, I got quite a bit done. Here’s the round up.

Publishing

The Magically Ever After anthology was out in February, but didn’t hit the bestseller lists we aimed for, even with many thousands of sales. We just weren’t lucky. But my Rumpelstiltskin retelling novel I created for it (A Cage of Gold and Lies) will be out in January 2022, and I may even write some more fairy tale retellings. Would you like to see more for this series?

Beshadowed 2: Blood Bound, and Beshadowed 3: Shadows Awoken were both completed and released! It feels like a dream to be completing this series, that I have been planning for so long.

The vampire romance that I had under a pen name got a rebranding and released as Heartsblood: Unlife, Remortality, and Deathless, plus the Omnibus.

The other book by my pen name is spicier so I’ve decided not to republish it alongside my YA novels for now, but it is available for free to those who sign up to my newsletter in the Subscriber Library.

It was a bit of a slow down on colouring books this year, but I still got two brand new books out, plus a minis and a bundle. I’m really proud of Wild Magic and the new Mermaids and Animal Companions books, as both contain a lot of animal and creature companions in them that were a lot of fun!

I also started working with the amazing Delphine Lévesque Demers who will be creating some of my designs as grayscale versions, so fans of grayscale colouring, keep an eye out next year for more!

This year was another quite productive one for painting, with many new artworks created, and I’m quite proud of how some of them turned out.

General Business

For the last few years, most of my business plan has revolved around creating content (write all the novels, design all the colouring books!), and cleaning up old loose threads of smaller parts of my business to manage my time better. But that’s just about all done now! Obviously creating new books will continue to be one of my main pursuits, but I also need to spend some time going forward actually promoting them a bit too, lol.

I also need to work out how to be a better employer/manager of others and bring more people into my business to help out, because I feel like that would really help out.

Personal

This year we had over three months of lockdown and homeschooling, yikes. It was a tough time, but we got through it as a family and I’m proud of us for that! Proud of all of Australia for that! In other random news, I became the secretary of my local scouts group, made my first will, joined Tiktok, and got my COVID jabs.

What’s next?

Straight up for next year my main priority is wrapping up the Beshadowed series with the fourth and final book in that story.

Then I would like to do one more mermaid colouring book, because that will give me four needed to create a super bundle mermaid book, which would be so cool!

Once those projects are done, I’m actually unsure what to start next. I have lots of options…

I’ve written a story for a picture book that I could illustrate.

I have an epic fantasy about a half dragon/half unicorn I’d like to write… or maybe turn into a graphic novel? That’s a huge job, but a bit of a bucket list item for me.

I have outlines for more fairy tale retellings I could write, and outlines for a series of epic fantasy shifter romances, and plans for a post-apocalyptic series, or … well, you get the idea. I have a lot of other story ideas and plans I could be writing!

But I haven’t decided which to work on yet.

What do you think I should do next year?

Memory’s Wake Companion Guide Video Flip-Through

One of my favourite parts of creating the Memory’s Wake series was the world building, and illustrating the characters and scenes from the stories.

When the series was completed, I knew I wanted to gather up all of those images and information into one gorgeous bundle of all things Memory’s Wake

I put a lot of hours into creating the Memory’s Wake Companion Guide, gathering all my favourite quotes, creating write ups about the characters, settings, magic, creatures, and lore. I think it turned out to be something really special, a culmination of a decade’s worth of story planning, writing, and illustrations all brought together.

Here you can see a flip through of everything the book contains!

(Giveaway!) Memory’s Wake – The Re-readening

It’s been years since I last read my Memory’s Wake trilogy myself. But since it’s the tenth anniversary (of book one, at least), I felt like it was time to jump back into that world and see how it stands from my current perspective.

Would it hold up? Would it be cringe? I was actually fairly surprised by my reading experience …

It has been long enough since I’d read, that I’d forgotten some of the details of these books. I generally knew what was going to happen next, but sometimes had forgotten how it got to that stage, how the current scene got resolved, things like that. For example, I knew Eloryn was going to save Roen from the bounty hunters, but I’d forgotten how she did it.

Book one, Memory’s Wake, I was most worried about when I started reading. It was my first novel, after all. But it still drew me in and wasn’t too clunky. If anything, the prose was maybe a bit overworked, but it still held up pretty well, which I’d account for by just how much time I spent writing and revising it. It has even had some minor updates over the years as well which I think kept it a bit fresher. Solid first book effort, past self!

Evolution of the Memory’s Wake book cover

Book two, Hope’s Reign, actually ended up being my favourite to read, which was a huge surprise. Being the middle book in the series, I had sort of relegated it in my mind as the “filler” book, the soggy middle. It’s more political and inter-personal drama than action and adventure (although it still has some). But of all three books, it held my attention the most. The growth and depth of the characters in Hope’s Reign really drew me back in, really had me caring about them again, especially all the torture I put poor Mem through. I loved getting to finally see flash-backs of Mem and Will’s life in the other world. Also, I think it had some of Mem’s very best one-liners. This is the book where she is really becoming herself. Her old and new selves are in conflict, trying to find a balance on her path to self discovery, and it’s HARD for her, but I love who she becomes through out that struggle and into the third book.

Evolution of Hope’s Reign book cover

Book three, Providence Unveiled, was the biggest disappointment to me, honestly. As I had relegated Hope’s Reign, I think I had overinflated ideas about how the trilogy finished in this book. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still proud of how the story ends. I think it’s a pretty epic and powerful ending, but the prose lets it down at some points. I’m not sure if I was keen to get the book/series finished, or I used a different editor, but a lot of the prose wasn’t as polished as I’d like it to be. If I were to do any revisions of the series, this book is where I would start.

10 Years of Publishing Round Up

Ten years since I published my first book. What have I done in all those years? Let’s go back in time and find out …
*woobly noises and wiggle time travel fingers*

It’s 2011

I first dive into self publishing and release Memory’s Wake. It was so much fun that I worked to quickly write and release my second book, Emotionally Charged not long after. Then my daughter was born! So things slow down a little for a while…

2012

I realise that I can self-publish books in colour, so watch out, it’s Art Collection time! I publish Gothic Beauty, Fairy Visions, Mermaid Dreams, and Mythic Power. I’m busy raising an infant, but miss writing, so I write and release Emotionally Scarred, a short story in the Empath Chronicles.

2013

I get back on track with releasing the second book in the Memory’s Wake trilogy, Hope’s Reign. I also revise and re-release my graphic novel from high school, Fallen. Oh noes! I’m off track again and write another novel that is released under a pen name as an experiment! (See more about it in 2021)

2014

A slow year. I think I was busy working on the third Memory’s Wake novel and some other non-publishing things (I’m still running Fairies and Fantasy product production at this stage). Probably making dolls or some other side-track ^_^. But I did release Fairy Visions 2 Art Collection. I also had some line work available so I thought, why not put them together into a colouring book? My Fairy Art colouring book is released on a whim. If only I’d known what that would mean …

2015

This is when things start picking up. I release another art book, Enchanted Fantasy. I get the Memory’s Wake trilogy finished with Providence Unveiled, and also release the omnibus and companion guide (which I though would be easy but was like 3 months work!).

But wait … hang on … That basic colouring book I released last year, gosh, why is it selling so many copies? And wow, what’s this adult colouring book thing that’s in the news everywhere? And who is this Johanna Basford selling a million copies of her colouring book?

I decide to put together a slightly more detailed and thought out colouring book, and release Mermaids Calm Ocean colouring. It does rather well, so I also release Enchanted Magical Forests colouring book, Fairy Companions, and Magic Minis. That Christmas period, I sell about 20,000 colouring books and I don’t even know how this is reality.

2016

Okay, so colouring books are the thing right now! Got it. I buckle in and release Gothic, Fairy Art Grayscale, Mermaids Grayscale, Mythic Mermaids, Goddess, Night Magic, Enchanted Grayscale, Gothic Minis, Festive Magic, Mermaid Minis, and Faedorables Sweet and Simple. Phew.

I turn down three different traditional publishers who ask me to sign with them for colouring books because I don’t want to lose my publishing freedom or take the pay-cut involved.

2017

Are we still doing colouring books? Yes we are! Fairy Companions Grayscale, Memory’s Wake colouring book in line art and grayscale, Ponds and flowers, Fairy Magic, Fairy Colouring Journal, Faedorables Cute and Creepy, and Faedorables minis. But I really want to get back into writing, so I play around in my pen name again and release another story there. I decide that publishing is now my thing, and I start wrapping up all my other business activities (e.g. manufacturing/wholesaling my own merch).

2018

I’m kind of burnt out with colouring books and just want to write for a while. I release the Mermaid colouring journal, then write a few books under my pen name, then just before Christmas I panic that I’ve done like no new colouring books and get the Unicorns and Dragons colouring book out.

2019

After an incredible author conference in January, I decide it’s time to push my limits and see what I can get done. I publish Grayscale minis, Fairies and Fantasy Bundle, Fairytales colouring book, Gothic Colouring Journal, Gothic Grayscale, Faedorables Tea Party, Faedorables Colouring Journal, Fairy Portraits, Faedorables Beasts, Colouring Planner, Faedorables bundle, and Inspirational words. A title or two (short and omnibus) under my pen name. And I finally, FINALLY complete and release two more books in the Empath Chronicles. All that and I was away travelling for 3 months out of that year. It’s my biggest year of publishing yet and I was completely exhausted by it >_<

2020

I have big plans for another big year! Oh wait, Australia is on fire. I release the Empath Chronicles Omnibus, Fairy minis, and Aussie animals colouring book as a fundraiser after the fires. But OH WAIT we now have a worldwide pandemic and it’s lock down time. Homeschooling and stress about the future. Schedule and plans are all pushed back and relaxed. I release the Faedorables activity book, Tales and myth bundle, Grayscale bundle, Faedorable minis 2, and Animals and Flowers minis (all fairly easy as they re-use existing designs and my wonderful designer, Kim, does a lot of the set up for me). I work on and release the first book in a new series I’ve been wanting to write forever, Darkness Unknown – Beshadowed book 1, and also one all new colouring book, Dark Fantasy.

2021

Things have settled down a little, and I release Blood Bound, Beshadowed book 2. Those pen name books I mentioned? I decide it’s time to bring everything together, and re-release them under my name as the three book Heartsblood series. The Wild Magic colouring book is also done. Plans are to get one more new novel and one more colouring book out this year (I also have a couple more unpublished pen name books and things up my sleeve that I may re-release too). But for new work, I’ve decided that two novels and two new colouring books each year is a good balance for me. But plans always change. I like being able to be flexible based on my own inspiration and what my audience wants.

Total Currently Published Titles –

11 novels, 2 omnibus, 1 companion guide, one short story. Also 2 novels and 1 novella currently unpublished, and 4 audiobooks (uncounted in total). And three French translations (from another publisher though technically, so we won’t count them either).

24 “Main range” colouring books, 24 subsidiary colouring books (bundles, grayscale, minis, journals, etc).

That’s 62 titles altogether (anyone want to double check I didn’t miss anything??).

My books, out in the world –

My sales data tells me that over the last ten years I have sold at least 425,242 books and ebooks.

Over 563,754 if you also count free ebook giveaways.

That’s not counting anything through Etsy, audiobooks, or direct giveaways (e.g. through Bookfunnel, Booksprout, etc). Nor direct in-person sales.

That’s A LOT. A lot a lot. Damn, aren’t I meant to be a writer? Words fail me. The big numbers break my brain and I’m just so grateful and amazed and mind-blown by it, so I’ll just say again A. LOT.

Self-publishing has given me the kind of career freedom, success, and stability I never thought I’d achieve. I’m massively thankful that it’s a path available to me, and that my creations have been embraced by so many readers and colouring enthusiasts.

I wonder, what will my next ten years be like?

(Remember, my Anniversary Memory’s Wake competition is still running till the 25th, so be sure to go and enter!)

(Giveaway!) 10th Anniversary of Publishing Celebrations!

2021 marks my tenth year since I published my very first book, my novel, Memory’s Wake. And the start of my obsession with publishing and creating BOOOOKS!

Well, I suppose that’s not entirely true. I’ve always loved books, and have been creating them my whole life. I still have a handful of ones I made from as young as 6 or 7, wads of paper stapled together, contents hand-drawn in crayon. Putrid Puffin, who ate peas and muffins, was one of my early classics.

In high school I wrote my first unfinished novel of 19,000 words, and created a few completed comic books, one of which I even reproduced and sold early in my art career (Fallen). But Memory’s Wake still feels like my first real book. A labour of love of almost ten years in the making itself (most of that time spent in misguided world-building and not actually writing anything… much of which got thrown out when I spent the time to actually learn how to write a proper story). Anyway, once I decided I wanted that story that had been floating around my head so long to be a real book, I got stuck into it and got it done, and then in 2011, decided to self publish, because it seemed like the way of the future for authors. And it’s sure been a wild ride.

Since then, I’ve published a HEAP of books. More novels, plus colouring books, art books, and more. But Memory’s Wake will always be my first, special book baby.

Even now, ten years after publishing my first novel (and with four series now out!), I’m still getting long-term fans of my art who didn’t know I also wrote! But there are just as many who have been with me on my writing journey right from the beginning.

Are you just discovering my stories? Or have you been on this adventure with me all along?

Now I’m going to bake myself a cake ^_^ Anything else you think I should do to celebrate this milestone?
