Exciting News from Secret Squirrel Reporting for Duty
So far 2016 has been a whole bunch of craziness for me, both good and bad. There were health issues that had me clutching my blankie and crying for my momma, more doctors visits than I care to recount and an upcoming surgery. Yet, despite all of the drama, there have been a few exciting things happening.
When 2015 ended I was hard at work putting together my first indie series, Playing with Bad Boys. The series was plotted. The first book and a prequel novella, Playing by the Rules, were written. All I needed to do was format the prequel to the series for release as a free read to my VIP Readers first before it went on sale to the public. However, in the midst of that process, I received an unexpected email from Harlequin.
Back in the summer of 2015, I'd proposed my Playing with Bad Boys series to Harlequin's Kimani Romance, with which several of my fellow Hot M.A.M.A.s are already published. I nudged them a few months later, with no response. I moved on with plans to indie publish the series. So I was pleasantly surprised (okay, completely shocked) when I received a request for the full manuscript of Book #1 in the series.
A few weeks later I received the call and was offered what is now a 4-book and holiday novella deal. A week ago I inked the contract and sent it on its merry way. In the last two days the new title of the series, which I shared with my VIP Readers earlier today, and the title of each book have been determined. Expect the first book in the series to make its way onto bookshelves in March of 2017.
I'm thrilled to join the long list of fabulous past and present Kimani Romance authors, like Kianna Alexander, Cheris Hodges, Altonya Washington, Jamie Pope, Farrah Rochon, Sharon C. Cooper, Nana Malone and Brenda Jackson.
And what about the prequel to the series? I'm glad to announce that I'll still be able to share it with my VIP Readers as a free read. However, you'll have to wait a little longer. Though the book is already completed, the edits to Book 1 may prompt a few changes in the prequel's story line. So expect the prequel to be released to my VIP Readers in December of this year and on sale to the public on February 3, 2017.
No more secret squirrel. I'm back in action, baby.
Happy Reading!

Oh, brother!
Hi, kittens!
I'm in full-on writer mode right now. I have at least two stories I working on right now for Phaze Books. The first is Addicted to Love. If you read Slave to Love , you may remember the characters Lord No and Bubbles. This story will explore how those two got together and what happened to them after the show. Check out the cover below. Hot, right?
The other story I'm working on is No Ordinary Love. There was another character in Slave to Love who "spoke" to me. As I was writing Slave to Love, I knew at some point I was going to write Sweetheart's story. She, out of all of the characters, needed to get her Dom. Check out the cover for that book below. Hot, too, right? I cannot wait for both of these stories to come out through Phaze Books, which should be sometime in 2016.
Now on to other pressing items. On my "good girl" side, writing as Crystal B. Bright (real name - I swear), I have a series at Lyrical Press called the Mama's Boys series. Why Mama's Boys? I liked the idea of having men who are truly good to their mother. You know the saying. A man who is good to his mother will be just as good to the woman he's dating.
Book one of the series is
The Look of Love
. Right now, the book is on sale for only $0.99! Here's the blurb:
You can’t fight love…
There’s only one thing MMA fighter Gunnar Wells is more devoted to than his career, and that’s his mother, “Queen” Elizabeth. An elegant African-American woman who adopted Gunnar and his two white brothers, Elizabeth was there when they needed her, and they’ll do anything for her. For Gunnar, that means running her hair salon when she suddenly falls ill. And if that’s not awkward enough for the champion fighter, he’ll have to work alongside Eboni Danielson, the other love of his life. The one he left behind to pursue his dream. The one he’s never forgotten…
Between the salon and her volunteer work, Eboni keeps busy to keep her mind off the man who broke her heart. So when Gunnar shows up again, she does her best to stay cool—on the outside. But the more she watches Gunnar step up and help out, the less she can deny her feelings. Soon Gunnar is doing everything he can to convince Eboni to give him a fighting chance. Can she trust him again—even when old secrets and new dangers come between them once more?
The first book covers the struggles of the oldest brother, Gunnar Wells. Book two of the series, Forget Me Not , will detail the middle brother's career as an NFL quarterback, his struggles running his mother's flower shop, and fighting back his romantic feeling toward the woman who owns a competing flower shop. This book goes on sale tomorrow, Tuesday, February 2nd, 2016! Can you tell I'm a little excited? Check out the cover below.
Here's the blurb:
Roses are red, violets are blue.
Only one woman could make NFL star Gideon Wells walk away from the Super Bowl: His Mama, "Queen" Elizabeth, the beautiful, strong black woman who adopted him and his two white brothers when they were just kids. So when Elizabeth develops a pressing health issue, Gideon doesn’t hesitate to come home and run the flower shop she loves almost as much as her boys. But there’s an unexpected complication in Queen Elizabeth’s shop: and that complication looks really good in a gardener’s apron and pruning gloves.
This mama’s boy has a naughty side too.
Janelle Gold has always thought of herself as a geek, more into books than sports, preferring brains over brawn. So a gorgeous jock like Gideon Wells is not exactly the type she usually goes for. But there’s something about the hot quarterback that makes Janelle think sometimes opposites do attract, and it’s not just his dedication to his family, or the fact that he can hold his own in the flower shop. There’s just something irresistible about a man who stops to smell the roses.
And talked about perfect timing for the release. While your man enjoys the Super Bowl, you can be reading about your own sexy quarterback at his Super Bowl. Hope you dig Gideon Wells.
I'm so excited about the release of this book, I'm willing to give a lucky reader a copy! Well, "give" is a loose term. You are going to have to work for it. :) I'm going to ask some questions based on The Look of Love . Yes, you need to have read that book to win the 2nd book. Answer these five questions below by 5 p.m. EST on Tuesday, February 2nd and I'll send you an ebook for Forget Me Not . Post your answers in the comments box below. The first to answer all 5 answers correctly will win!
Are you ready to play? Here are the questions:
1.) What's the name of the opponent Gunnar Wells fights at the opening of the book?
2.) What's the name of the opponent Gunnar's agent wants Gunnar to fight next?
3.) What's the name of the community center where Eboni volunteers her time?
4.) You know in the first book, "Queen" Elizabeth Sommerville owns a hair salon. The second book will be centered on her second business at a flower shop. What's the 3rd business "Queen" Elizabeth owns?
5.) What's the name of the restaurant where Gunnar and Eboni have dinner together once she finally agrees to go out with him?
That's right, kittens. You need to have paid attention to what you read. Tick tock! Tick tock! Don't wait.
Now I need to get back to work.

#OscarsSoWhite: or Why I Started Hot MAMA
Hey, Y'all :)
It's been a while since I posted here, mostly because of the holidays. I tend to fall down the rabbit hole of distraction and disorganization when I'm on 24 hour kid duty for long periods of time, LOL. Well school is back in and I'm getting back to work.
By now, I'm sure you're aware of the upcoming 2016 Oscars, and the controversy surrounding the slate of nominees. I heard "Jenna" from Radar Online this morning on the my local radio station. She referred to the nominees as "heavily white."
That's a cute way to say it, Jenna.
Driving my car down the freeway, I LOL'ed, y'all. That is like saying, "Boy, that snow drift over there is heavily white." Or, "Did you notice how heavily white that bowl of rice is?"
The Oscar nominations (at least for on-screen talent) this year are not "heavily while." They are COMPLETELY white.
Having cleared that up, let's move on.
I'm not here to debate whether the Oscars are ignoring or marginalizing the work of people of color in Hollywood; I think we all know the truth on that. But hearing so much about this in the media, including the whole boycott thing, and the video by Jada Pinkett-Smith, and the response by the still embittered Janet Hubert (petty much?), made me think about why I started Hot MAMA in the first place.
When I started Hot MAMA back in 2012, I wanted to accomplish several things, including cross promotion and raising the profile of authors of color from my geographic region. But the most important mission of Hot MAMA is SISTERHOOD. Camaraderie, cooperative effort, and a safe place for us. As women of color in the publishing industry, we face pretty much the same uphill battle as people of color in Hollywood do, when it comes to having our talents recognized, acknowledged, and celebrated.
We are working HARD, y'all.
At the heart of Hot MAMA is the same mission I see being carried out by Rebekah Weatherspoon with her WOCinRomance accounts on Twitter/Tumblr, by the brilliant ladies behind Girl Have You Read and Romance Novels in Color, by Wayne Jordan and his staff and Romance in Color, and by KM Jackson with her #WeNeedDiverseRomance campaign. We simply want our work to be read and respected, just as our mainstream counterparts have enjoyed and come to expect. Part of that is in forming groups, and another part of it is in bringing attention to the work we do. I, for one, am proud to be a part of such a vibrant, intelligent and accomplished community of women of color.
If you're boycotting the Oscars, or just not watching because you never watch anyway, I hope you'll fill the time with a great book written by an author of color instead.
Until Next Time,
Kianna

Happy New Year!
Hi, kittens!
Happy New Year! Can you believe one year is down and we're starting a new one? As always, the start of the new year makes people reflective, including me. So when I think of the past year, I think about all the great things that have happened. For one, I've had several releases.
Slave to Love available in ebook and print through Phaze Books.
Is This Love? available in ebook and print through Phaze Books.
And "Learning the Hard Way" available in ebook through All Romance eBooks.
Under my real name, Crystal B. Bright, I released my first book in more than ten years.
The Look of Love
is the first book in the Mama's Boys series and is available in ebook and print through Lyrical Press.
Book 2, Forget Me Not , will be out February 2016 in ebook and print from Lyrical Press. Talk about starting off the year right!
And book 3,
Head Over Heels
, will be out August 2016 in ebook and print from Lyrical Press. My year is already starting off right.
It feels so good to be productive again. If I want to keep on that path, I have to set goals for myself. I'll need to make a writing schedule and keep to it. So I'm cutting this post short. I'll get with you all next month to talk about Forget Me Not.

Holy shit balls!
Hey, Kittens!
Whew! That's it. The "Kickin' It with Adrienne Kama and Bridget Midway" event is over. Wow! What a great time. It was a ton of work to pull off, but so worth it. I would love to do that again sometime...but not just yet. Like I said, it was A LOT of work to put the whole shebang together.
So what did I discover with this event? LOTS of things.
Readers are awesome! The readers that came out to the event did it with eyes and minds wide open. Here I was expecting them to be quiet and shy. Oh, no. They were asking questions left and right, getting involved, loving all the play.Authors are awesome! Not only did we receive a ton of great promo and books from authors, but also a ton of authors registered and came to the event as well, authors like Taisha DeMay, A.C. Arthur, Shara Azod, Eve Vaughn and the yet-to-be-published Nikki Hale and Denise Williams Cherry. It's great seeing authors wanting to learn more about a lifestyle to write it accurately. People in the Lifestyle are awesome! Preparing for this event, I was like a chicken with my head cut off. I was running around making sure the hotel was okay, that the food was order, and I had the bags and everything ready. Three days before the actual event, one of my BDSM demonstrators contacted me to say she couldn't be a part of the event. She was supposed to open the event, so this threw me for a loop. So I asked her and another demonstrator that if they could, find me a suitable replacement. Oh, they did. The amazing East Bound and his girl, toy, joined and did an amazing kinbaku scene, which opened the event. Also there was Master Stephen and his girl kris iris. And there was Sir Knotz, who did a great rope demonstration, Vanilla Facade, who filled in as his assistant, and, of course, my buddy into. Two years ago when he was at the "Wrapped Up" event, he was there with Mistress Dama de Noche as her slave. Since her passing, it was different for me to see him in a more dominating role even though I knew in his life before Dama, he was a Dom. Adrienne Kama is awesome! So I've known Adrienne for over ten years. She and I were at the same crappy publisher together. The reason I had asked her to do this event with me was because at the time, she was the only author of color that I knew doing interracial BDSM. I contacted her a year ago and asked if she wanted to be a part of this event and release her third book in the Stella Rice series. She happily agreed. She is a wonderful, calming spirit and a great partner in this event. The demand is high. As soon as I said, "Thank you! Good night!" readers and the people in the Lifestyle came up to me and said, "You need to do this again, and we'll come back." Here I thought I had totally screwed up the day. I wanted to do so much more that I couldn't. But, it's good to see that if I were to do it again -- and trust me, that's a big if -- that there would still be an audience.
What made me proud was to release the third book in my Love series.
Is This Love?
is now released in ebook and print through Phaze Books. Considering I never thought I would write a sequel to
Love My Way
, I'm thrilled that I could come up with a 3rd book that will -- hopefully -- interest readers.
So now that all of that is done, I'm taking a bit of me time for the next couple of months. I'll do some plotting, but overall, I'm taking it easy until the new year. Then watch out. So much more is coming including book 2 in the Mama's Boys series under my real name, Crystal B. Bright. The second book is called Forget Me Not . It'll be out in ebook and print in February 2016 through Lyrical Press. This brother is an NFL quarterback with a green thumb. I can't wait for this one to come out.
Okay, time to relax. Hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Real Love. . .Why I write
This past weekend, I was a part of my sister's vow renewal ceremony. She and my brother in law have been married for 25 years.
She was 19 when she said I do for the first time. And you know people say when folks get married that young they are bound to divorce. Thank goodness my sister is not a statistic.
What she is —is my relationship role model.
I'm not going to put all of her business out there, because she would kill me. But I've watched this couple go through ups and downs, raise two beautiful kids, beat the odds and still love each other.
Sounds like a romance novel, huh?
Watching her and my brother in law recommit to one another was beautiful and it got me thinking about the romance genre haters.
Oh, these books are so unrealistic, they say. Or call them bodice rippers, which is a term I hate more than pork. Then you see a real life love story play out in front of you.
After the ceremony was over, my niece said something that made my heart quake. When she was in high school, she was one of a few kids who lived with her mom and dad. A sobering fact.
Now, I tell people all the time that my sister introduced me to African American romance novels. I'm not saying that because she's an avid romance reader is why she is happily married, but seems like this is a life imitating art situation.
Marinate on that, haters.
Congratulations to my sister and her husband for 25 years of marriage.

Farrah Rochon is Coming to Raleigh to Talk About Diversity in Romance

Just peeking my head out of a crazy week of revisions and client work for this public announcement: author Farrah Rochon will be presenting a talk on "Diversity in Romance, and Why It Matters."
If you're fan of Farrah's (and seriously, who isn't?) and a writer, or aspiring writer, you'll want to join the Heart of Carolina Romance Writers for this presentation tomorrow in Raleigh at Glen Eden Pilot Park.
Visitors may attend up to two chapter meetings without joining. So we'd love to see you there at 1PM on Saturday, November 14th. Farrah will also be joining us for coffee at Cafe Carolina in Cameron Village following the meeting at approximately 3:30PM.
Haven't read Farrah's work yet? No worries. She's offering the first two books in her Moments in Maplesville novella series for FREE!
Just go here .

Contributing to the delinquency of book sales
Hi, kittens!
Just four days until the "Kickin' It with Adrienne Kama and Bridget Midway" event in Williamsburg. I have the printed books in hand. The swag bags are nearly packed. Adrienne is ready. My demonstrators are ready. I know readers are ready. I see the posts on Facebook. I've even checked out the hotel layout so I'll know how to have the room set up. I cannot wait to have the registrants see the demonstrators in action. I also can't wait until they have my book, Is This Love? , in their hot, little hands.
While my mind is on the event, I've been thinking about something else, something more crucial. Book sales. At a recent event, Yvette Hines had asked me if I noticed a difference in my royalty payments lately. I hadn't really. When I scanned my royalties spreadsheet, I did notice a trend, a downward trend.
As an author, I could chalk the dip in sales to a myriad of things. I didn't promote enough. I'm not writing what readers are interested in now. I'm not publishing enough. Notice how I keep the focus on me and not the readers or my publishers or even global warming. It's because there's no one to blame but me and my actions. I can't really complain about a problem that I, myself, have contributed to in the past.
Readers have been enjoying the wave of low-cost box sets that have been so prevalent within the last few years. They're able to get nine, ten, twelve, and I think I even saw one with fifteen stories, sometimes even full-length novels, for only $0.99! Why should readers pay full price for a novel when they can get several for a tenth of the cost? Even I participated in a box set a year ago.
For authors, it's a way to get to that best-seller status. For readers, it's a great way to learn about authors they may have never heard of or read before, and a way to get cheap fiction. It's the Wal-Mart of romance. No, better yet. It's the Costco or Sam's Club of romance. Big box superstore versus a specialty store.
Authors can't compete with the bargain, but we've become so shortsighted about the immediate result that we haven't considered the big picture. Or maybe we have, but we thought we would get a different outcome. Maybe authors, like myself, thought that if we got involved in a box set and new readers discovered us on top of making a best-seller list, that those new readers would buy our backlist titles. The only thing we managed to do is make readers even more ravenous for similarly packaged works.
So what am I to do? Keep doing box sets? No. For one, it's not as lucrative as one may think. Yes, there's a great chance to garner enough sales to make it to a best-seller list like New York Times or USA Today. Ultimately, you end up feeling like you've sold yourself short. Secondly, it can stifle creativity. It did for me. I discovered very quickly that I'm the kid who plays in the sandbox alone. That's okay. Self-awareness is a great thing.
Recently I saw a video on Facebook of Lady Gaga talking about how she almost quit the music business because she was forced to do things within it that she didn't like. I love Lady Gaga and I think she's a very talented woman, but I posted all the things she'd done wrong up to that point in her career that she said she hated. As I typed the words and reread them, I realized I was talking to myself.
In order for me to be a happy, productive writer, I have to love what I write. I want to give readers great fiction. Not rushed fiction. Not stereotypical fiction. Definitely not predictable fiction. I'm going to stand by my idea that if I continue to write strong romances with great plots and engaging characters that the readers will come.
So, in order to support that claim, I need to cut this post and get to writing.

Playing by the Rules Cover Reveal
Peeking my head out of my writing cave momentarily to give you a sneak peek of what's going on behind the scenes here in the bat cave.
Last month I told you about the surprise goody I've been working on. My prequel novella to the Playing with Bad Boys series will debut to my VIP Readers as a free serial novella before the complete work goes on sale Valentine's Day Weekend.
Last Friday I gave my VIP Readers the first peek at the cover for the novella. But I just couldn't resist giving Hot M.A.M.A. readers an early preview, too.
Playing by the Rules is the lead into my interracial romance, Playing It Safe, which will be released on March 1, 2016.
In Playing by the Rules we meet Meredith "Merrie" Jane and Hunter DeSeau.
Happy reading!

Playing by the Rules is the lead into my interracial romance, Playing It Safe, which will be released on March 1, 2016.

In Playing by the Rules we meet Meredith "Merrie" Jane and Hunter DeSeau.
Merrie Jane walked away from her longtime relationship with her ex because she was tired of playing games. She wants to be with a man who loves her madly and deeply. Enough to settle down and start a family. When she crosses paths with her ex's brother at a party a few months later, the last thing she expects is to discover that he's been harboring feelings for her and that she has feelings for him, too.
Hunter DeSeau adored Merrie long before his competitive younger brother asked her out. Unable to dismiss his feelings for her, he spent the past year distancing himself from them both. But now that their relationship is over and done, he's faced with the hardest decision of his life. Break the rules and pursue the woman he wants more than anything in the world or keep putting everyone else's happiness ahead of his own.
Merrie has spent her entire life playing by other people's rules. As she examines her feelings for Hunter, she realizes a startling truth. She's been with the wrong brother all along. But choosing Hunter means exposing herself to gossip, rumors and hard feelings. In a society where perception is everything, is their love worth the risk?Part I of the serial releases on Friday, November 6th. Get your pass to my VIP Reader Lounge today so it'll land in your inbox along with a chance to win my fourth quarter VIP Reader giveaway.
