"I woke at 7.30 to snow. Snow sugaring the trees,snow three inches deep. The birds are busy feedingin the peanut tree, the only tree to bear fruit inFebruary: pendulous cylinders of peanuts. Blackbird,robin, sparrow,coal tit, greenfinch, chaffinch, blue tit,sparrow, great tit (more occasional), long-tailed tits,great spotted woodpecker, pheasant (cock) circling beneath,pecking up the peanut crumbs from the upper table.Mallards sliding under the hedges on the far side of themoat."
