fun with socialmedia

"I don't understand Digg," Dude told me the other day. "I just don't get it."
I'm still figuring out Digg. It's easier for me to understand the social element of Digg than it is, say, Delicious, but right now I just use both as storehouses for stuff I collect around the Web. One thing I've noticed is that Digg and Delicious seem to slant toward the tech crowd, which means there aren't a lot of articles already submitted about some of the stuff I'm interested in. mea culpa
There have been a few reactions to my last post, both online and off, that made me want to clarify a couple of things:
1) Giggles 'n' Hugs is a great place, and if I seemed to imply anything otherwise, that was total carelessness and stupidity on my part. It has a fantastic indoor area for kids to play in that is gated off from the 'restaurant' part and the food is geared for kids but healthy and tasty in a way that tends to surprise adults (why this is, I don't know, but adults often comment on

puppet people

My triplets turned 3 today, and we had a little party for them at a children's restaurant called Giggles 'n' Hugs ("That's kind of a creepy name for a place," observed my ex)*. The highlight was Scott Land, or as I so brilliantly called him, "the puppet dude" (as in, "Is the puppet dude here yet?", asked while he was standing beside me. So not my finest moment). I first saw his act at a mall in Century City and learned that he worked with the marionettes on the movie Team America. He's a gre

writing workshop part three
So Rachel Resnick started off her "kickstart your novel/memoir" workshop by drawing some Breakfast Club confessions out of us (...strangers from different walks of life, trapped together for the day in a little house in Topanga Canyon...if only Ally Sheedy had been there). When it was my turn to complete the "tell a secret you've never told anyone" task I hesitated, realizing I could take the question seriously and go for it, or just shy away/back off. The first option seemed much more interest

When two people start becoming that peculiar entity known as "a couple" they are also creating a story that starts with the moment they "met". Over the last week or so I got to hear Dude relaying bits and pieces of our own slowly developing story to various friends over various dinners. It's interesting, and maybe a bit surreal, to get that other slant on yourself, as a character in a narrative starring someone else: in this case a man who had just re-entered the dating marketplace and was hea

listening to: eerie funky dubstep stuff
In mid-July I went to an all-day novel-writing workshop held in Topanga Canyon and it proved to be one of the smarter things I've done all year. I hadn't participated in a workshop since before BLOODANGEL was published -- when I was workshopping, in fact, the first 60 pages of BLOODANGEL -- and on the whole I tend to find them a mixed bag: what I take away from them isn't always worth the time and effort I put in, although this has as much to do with my

these pages want to be free
I was going through my old email account and found this chunk of manuscript -- my first novel BLOODANGEL, which came out from Roc/Penguin in 2005.
I posted it at Scribd as a free (and long) excerpt:

That is all. Except for this picture of brunette me:
And now I'm off to read and eat chocolate covered peanuts.

fire, apocalypse, and ducks
Yesterday I was planning my afternoon's writing session when I padded barefoot into the kitchen and overheard the housekeeper and one of the nannies talking about a fire. The kitchen has floor-to-ceiling windows facing northwest -- which sounds nice, and is, except it makes the eating area very bright and very warm at certain times of day -- and I looked out past the yard and pool to see smoke billowing up from beyond yonder hills. "Was that flame?" I said. Because I've seen smoke before: one s
