Self-publishing Done Wrong

My latest Medium article explains why my previous books on publishing and marketing represented a wrong approach to the self-publishing business. It also explains I why wrote another book on these subjects, this time using the correct approach. Read it at: https://medium.com/@hanque99/a-book-about-self-publishing-done-wrong-e49b7c5d307

A Review for How to Self-publish and Market a Book

My new book received its first review!

It’s by British author Mark Henderson.

The book is on sale as a pre-order for $2.99.  After it’s released, the price will increase to $4.99.

Mark’s detailed review is pasted below:

A must-have guide for authors intending to self-publish

Hank Quense has allowed me the privilege of reading a pre-publication pdf of his How to Self-Publish and Market a Book. He knows I don’t self-publish (most of my books have been released by small publishing houses, two by a larger one), so his new guide isn’t directly relevant to me. On the other hand, self-publishing is either the norm or a likely option for several of my author friends and creative writing students. So would I recommend this book to them?

The short answer is ‘Yes’. Of course I was favourably inclined in advance of reading because I’ve enjoyed so many of Hank’s fiction works – the Gunderland stories, the Moxie trilogy and the Zaftan Troubles – and I’ve used his excellent Creating Stories a lot in my teaching. However, I expected to take a detached, uninvolved view of his latest non-fiction work. Then a sentence in the Foreword challenged this expectation: “Even if you have a publisher, reading through the publishing tasks in this book will give you a much better understanding of the publishing process. “ The prediction proved true. As I read the rest of the book I learned things about publishing that I’d only half-known or not realised at all.

The book also unsettled my conviction that social media isn’t for me. Previously, I found Facebook an irritating waste of time; LinkedIn mixed up my profile with someone else’s so I had to delete it; I’ve never been able to see the point of Twitter; and so on. But Hank has persuaded me to try again, at least with LinkedIn, and to involve myself more seriously with Goodreads; and he’s assured me that my website and blog posts are worth maintaining.

Three big positives of the book are: (1) it’s very clearly written and well organised, with lots of helpful links, as you’d expect with Hank; (2) it’s comprehensive; and (3) uniquely, as far as I know, it addresses both publishing and marketing as linked or coordinated (and multifarious) activities. On a personal note, while I rely on my publishers to market my books, I’ve picked up several hints and suggestions from How to Self-Publish and Market a Book that I can use to supplement their efforts.

Of course Hank writes primarily for the USA market, so there are parts of his book (those relating to tax matters, for example) that have no direct application for readers in other parts of the world such as the UK. Nevertheless they’re worth noting. Whether you self-publish or not, writing is a business and you need to keep proper accounts. So even if the letter of Hank’s advice about accounting and taxation isn’t relevant in your case, the spirit of it is.

Thanks for writing this book, Hank. It’s going to help a lot of people, and I’ll recommend it warmly to any of my students who consider publishing (as I try to persuade them all to do).
