The Shining Star Of America & The World: Barack Obama

Compiled & Edited by: Pradeep Thakur ISBN: 8190870505  ISBN-13: 9788190870504 Publisher: Pradeep Thakur & Sons  Binding: Paperback Dimension: 5.5 x 8.5 x 1.5 Inches  Pub. Year: 2009

Barack Obama.jpg

From the preface of the book:

The Family of Barack Obama is an extended clan of African American, English, Indonesian, and Kenyan (Luo) heritage… and his story is the American story- values from the heartland, a middle-class upbringing in a strong family, hard work and education as the means of getting ahead, and the conviction that a life so blessed should be lived in service to others.

Many aspects of the public image of U.S. President Barack Obama are unusual among American politicians, and stand in stark contrast to those of many of his former opponents. During his candidacy for President, his international and biracial background was unprecedented and engendered questions of racial authenticity and religious affiliation. Obama's lack of experience on the national stage became a recurring theme used by former rivals Hillary Clinton and John McCain. His perceived combination of political savvy, calm and even temperament, and conservative support have all been credited with his ascendancy to the Presidential office.

Obama is of biracial background, the son of a Kenyan Luo father and a Kansan White American mother of English descent. With his upbringing in Honolulu and Jakarta and his Ivy League education, Obama's early life experiences differ markedly from many of the African American politicians who launched their careers in the 1960s through participation in the civil rights movement.

Obama is a Christian, but July 2008 polls showed that some Americans believe incorrectly that he is Muslim or was raised Muslim (12% and 26%, respectively, in Pew and Newsweek polls). Citing the latter poll by CNN's Larry King, Obama responded, "…I wasn't raised in a Muslim home," and said that advancement of the misconception insulted Muslim Americans. Some conservative opponents of Obama featured his middle name "Hussein" and the similarity of his last name with "Osama" to suggest that he has Muslim heritage or possible associations with terrorists, or to question his loyalty to the United States (both "Barack" and "Hussein" are names of Semitic origin that mean, respectively, to bless/blessing and good/handsome).

The moment Barack Obama became a contender for the US presidency on July 27, 2004, until then he was just a local politician from Chicago. Twenty minutes later, after a brainstorming, nationally televised speech to the Democratic party convention in Boston, Obama was catapulted into the front ranks of his party.

Barack Obama carved out a exclusive political image–the testimony is that he being a member of the Democratic Party, was endorsed or supported by so many members of the Republican Party and political figures holding conservative views in the 2008 election. Just as in the 1980s many Democrats became known as "Reagan Democrats", in 2008 Republicans who supported Barack Obama became known as "Obama Republicans", or "Obamacans". Republican and conservative supporters of Obama included elected officials, former elected officials, retired military officers, and intellectuals. According to exit polls on Election Day, 9% of those who identified themselves as Republicans voted for Barack Obama.

As one of many points of sharp contrast between him and his 2008 opponent John McCain, Barack Obama has been perceived as having a calm and even temperament, which has been praised by former presidential candidate Chris Dodd as well as numerous media sources as "cool" and "unflappable". True, Obama proved himself to have the highest powerful seat of the political world: the 44th President of the United States of America…and Obama's leadership is set to influence the whole world.

The book before you– The Shining Star of America & The World: BaracK Obama-tries to cover the series of events related to Obama's development as a person and the new face of American leadership.
