Rhind has been a Kung Fu instructor (David holds black belt rankings in Wing Chun and Bak Sil Lum Kung Fu, Shotokan Karate, and Kenjutsu), a high school biology teacher, a performing musician and songwriter, and an accomplished ocean sailor. He graduated from Acadia and Dalhousie Universities, and has lived in Bermuda, the Bahamas, North Carolina, and Florida.
