Gopal Lahiri reviews Evening with a Sufi by Afsar Mohammad in Kitaab.

Here is a poet who writes in the node between the most personal moment and the undeniably universal one. There is a fierceness, a beauty, a joyful spirit in his work and he creates pieces of engaging resistance and poignant accuracy. Clarity and candidness are his watchwords, his voice is not always one of grandeur or pomposity. The poet summons such feelings in his poems even as they resist, contain, and try not to succumb to them. That makes it all the more moving.

Evening with a Sufi: Selected Poems by Afsar Mohammad
/
This volume brings together, for the first time in English translation (translated by the poet in collaboration with Shamala Gallagher) the selected, and often groundbreaking poetry of the celebrated Telugu poet Afsar Mohammad, known for his trendsetting poetry and literary criticism in the post-1980s Telugu literary culture.
/
Beside an erudite translator’s note from Gallagher, Evening with a Sufi also contains two in-depth essays on Afsar Mohammad’s poetry by David Shulman and Cheran Rudhramoorthy, plus an interview with the poet by poet and translator Rohith.

This took a long time–but better late than never. Presenting my third (or fourth) book of translation–of one of Assam’s iconic poets, Nilim Kumar, whose early works inspired me to be a poet.
/
Presenting I’M YOUR POET: Selected Poems by Nilim Kumar
/
This book owes its existence to Nilim Kumar’s trust and patience in my work as a translator and a publisher. For this, I am eternally grateful.
/
And I couldn’t have done this without the help from my friends — Soni Somarajan and Anindita Kar — who went through the manuscript several times and hammered it into shape. I am especially grateful to Anindita for her translations, and her insightful interview with the poet.
/
I am also grateful to the two poets I admire — Nabina Das and Ra Sh (Ravi Shanker N) — who agreed to read the manuscript at the draft stage and give their invaluable comments. A special thank you to Nabina for allowing us to use her translations of Nilim Kumar in the book.
/
We would like to thank Subodh Sarkar for allowing us to use his piece, and Damodar Mauzo, Chandrakant Patil, Koyamparambath Satchidanandan and Anamika for their invaluable comments.
/
I would like to dedicate this book to the memory of the poet Sananta Tanty, who passed away last year, who helped and pushed me to the world of poetry translation. Without him, I wouldn’t be a translator, and perhaps, there would be no Red River.
/
A shout out to my friend, Kumar Ranjan for the beautiful painting that adorns the cover.
/
And finally, dear readers, this book is for you. And it seeks your kindness.

Our new presentation/
All These Streets We’ve Known By Heart by Siddharth Dasgupta, a spiritual sequel to his bestselling A Moveable East (Red River, 2021)
The poet says, “All These Streets We’ve Known By Heart is an opera of the streets and their enigmas. You’ll encounter Shashi Kapoor, Brigitte Bardot, and Nina Simone. You’ll unravel the golden shovel, birthed from words by Carver, Proust, Seth, and such. You’ll swim in the slipstream of rebellious ghazal arrangements. And you'll dance across an opulent canvas of photographic, graphic, and typographic art.
