The Next Big Thing Blog Hop: Week 22

Week 22: THE NEXT BIG THING BLOG HOP

“The past few years have been full of high profile reads from across the genre spectrum. Love them or hate them, you have to admit you have at least heard of them.

As Independent Authors we all dare to dream we will be next, and let’s face it, you never know ... right? With some hard work and the right marketing any one of us could be the next most talked about Author.

With that thought, here is a author hop that is sort of like a game of tag.

One author posts, and then tags five other authors, who each link back to them. Readers have a chance to find new and exciting authors they may never have found otherwise. Some of us are still writing, others are just being released.

Either way, for you Fiction Lovers, a treasure trove awaits and I’d like to thank fellow Author Carol Marvell for tagging me to participate.”

Click the links to find out about Carol's books.

In this particular hop I and my fellow authors. each in their perspective blogs, have answered 10 questions where you get to learn about our current WIP (Works in Progress) as well as some goodies as to our process, from characters and inspirations to photographic/ cinematic eye candy! I hope you enjoy it!

If this or any other items pique your interest, please feel free to comment and share your thoughts and questions.

HERE ARE THE QUESTIONS

1: What is the working title of your book?

The Comfort of Strangers

2: Where did the idea come from for the book?

After seeing Time Code, an experimental film, there was a song at the end of it by the same name sung by Skin (of the band Skunk Anansie). The song struck me as did the beautiful filming of a glossy, dream-like L.A. Right then I got the idea to write a sort of love letter to the city of L.A. which started out as a short film script and then eventually morphed into a short story and then a novel.

3: What genre does your book fall under?

It's more dramatic than a thriller, darker than women's fiction and romance and lighter than a standard suspense. I'd probably call it a romantic noir thriller meshed into one.

4: Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

Any which resembled the folks on the cover of the book (although the Jeff cover model on the right does resembled Thomas Jane a bit):

5: What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

When actress Kasi Banks discovers her husband's infidelity, a game of revenge dances the edge of murder.

6: Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

Indie all the way baby! Just received it from the editor and going through secondary edits/rewrites now.

7: How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

Not long as it was a short script. Probably a week or two. The subsequent rewrites as it morphed into different mediums is another story. ;-)

8: What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

Double Indemnity & Mulholland Drive with a romantic suspense twist!

9: Who or What inspired you to write this book?

The film Time Code and the song The Comfort of Strangers.

Check it out and listen closely to the lyrics for some clues to the story. ;-)

10: What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

This is a woman's journey from redemption for a mistake she made in the past in letting the love of her life go. It's a mixture of dark drama, noirish elements, a little bit if suspense and romance. Here's a sneak peak at the blurb:

Kasi Banks is at the center of a brewing storm between her distracted husband, his lawyer—who may have something up his sleeve—and her former sweetheart from college. Once in a budding relationship in college with the love of her life, Matt Phillips, she let him go for fear of losing him to distance and in the line of duty. Now, years later, Kasi is a struggling actress and wife to one of the most powerful producers in Hollywood. But all isn't well in the Banks household.

Kasi discovers her husband Jeff is having an affair on the same night she discovers her old sweetheart is back in town. Now she’s faced with a whirlwind of choices that will forever change her life. Armed with an unconventional plan to fix things by 'scaring' her husband back to her with the help of an overzealous fan, the events that follow may risk her one last chance at happiness.

Colonization Release Party

Aubrie Dionne's much anticipated new SF romance debuts today and we're celebrating with a massive giveaway to round out the party!

“Forbidden love on a
paradise planet that’s anything but paradise...Dionne’s Colonization will keep
you guessing.” – Cherie Reich, author of Defying Gravity

Now Available at

Amazon ~ Barnes and Noble ~ Inkspell Publishing

Andromeda has spent all seventeen years of her life aboard a
deep space transport vessel destined for a paradise planet. Her safe cocoon is
about to break open as Paradise 21 looms only one month away, and she must take
the aptitude tests to determine her role on the new world and her computer

assigned lifemate. As a great-granddaughter of the Commander
of the ship, she wants to live up to her family name. But, her forbidden love
for her childhood friend, Sirius, distracts her and she fails the tests. The results
place her in a menial role in the new colony and pair her with Corvus, “the
oaf”.

But when Andromeda steps foot on Paradise 21, her predestined future is the least of her worries. Alien ghosts from a failed colonization warn her of a deadly threat to her colony. And when Sirius's ship crashes on the far ridge in an attempt to investigate, she journeys to rescue him with Corvus.

Andromeda now must convince the authorities of the imminent danger to protect her new home. What she didn't expect was a battle of her own feelings for Sirius and Corvus.

Can she save the colony and discover her true love?

Author Spotlight on Aubrie Dionne, Author of Colonization

In just a few days, author (and fellow Star Trek, Star Wars and Firefly fan) Aubrie Dionne releases her latest  YA sci-fi romance offering! AWD is honored to have the multi-talented speculative author and flutist  on our blog today to celebrate the release of her new book, Colonization!

Aubrie sat down and chatted with us about her work and her current novel. SF readers and fans are in for a special treat!

Q&A With Aubrie Dionne

AWD: When did you decide you wanted to be a writer?

AD: I teach flute lessons and play in orchestras, and I love
making up stories to go along with the music. My flute students told me I
should start writing them down, and here I am today!

AWD: How would you describe the genre in which you do most of
your writing?

AD: Actually, I thought I’d be a fantasy writer, but my science
fiction is selling much better, so that’s what I’ve been writing mostly.

AWD: Who is your target audience?

AD: I’d say women from 14-35. Although, I have had a few men
read my books and enjoy them!

AWD: What motivated you to start writing in this genre?

AD: I loved Star Wars and Star Trek growing up, and I wanted to
create my very own “Space Opera.”

AWD: What are your main concerns as a writer?

AD: Doing justice to my story and characters and making sure my
audience is entertained.

AWD: What would you say are the biggest challenges that you
face?

AD: The challenges used to be the enormous pile of rejections,
but they don’t seem to bother me as much now! I’m over it!

AWD: Do you write everyday? How much time do you spend on your
writing?

AD: I write 1k every day on average, which takes 1-2 hours. If I
skip a day, I try to do more the next day.

Giveaway #2

A Big Ol' Box of Books!

One of my fave vampire related and spooky reads along with some more Julie Kagawa goodness!

This is the book that got me hooked on author Tanith Lee. :-)

The Penguin Book of Vampire Stories
is the definitive collection of short tales of those deadly
bloodsuckers. Editor Alan Ryan really captured a wide range of talents
here, from Bram Stoker to Robert Bloch to Tanith Lee -- more than 30
stories of bloody good fun. Usually it's considered bad form for an
editor to include one of his own stories, but this book proves to be the
exception to the rule -- Ryan's "Following the Way" is one of the best
vampire short stories ever written. It's one of many masterpieces in
this must-have volume.

Contents:
"Fragment of a Novel" by George Gordon, Lord Byron
"The Vampyre" by John Polidori
"Varney the Vampyre, or, the Feast of Blood" [excerpt] by James Malcolm Rymer
"The Mysterious Stranger" by Anonymous
"Carmilla" by Sheridan Le Fanu
"Good Lady Ducayne" by Mary Elizabeth Braddon
"Dracula's Guest" by Bram Stoker
"Luella Miller" by Mary E. Wilkins-Freeman
"For the Blood is The Life" by F. Marion Crawford
"The Transfer" by Algernon Blackwood
"The Room in the Tower" by E.F. Benson
"An Episode of Cathedral History" by M.R. James
"A Rendevous in Averoigne" by Clark Ashton Smith
"Shambleau" by C.L. Moore
"Revelations in Black" by Carl Jacobi
"School for the Unspeakable" by Manly Wade Wellman
"Drifting Snow" by August Derleth
"Over the River" by P. Schuyler Miller
"The Girl with the Hungry Eyes" by Fritz Leiber
"The Mindworm" by C.M. Kornbluth
"Drink My Blood" by Richard Matheson
"Place of Meeting" by Charles Beaumont
"The Living Dead" by Robert Bloch
"Pages from a Young Girl's Journal" by Robert Aikman
"The Werewolf and the Vampire" by R. Chetwynd-Hayes
"Love-Starved" by Charles L. Grant
"Cabin 33" by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro
"Unicorn Tapestry" by Suzy McKee Charnas
"Following the Way" by Alan Ryan
"The Sunshine Club" by Ramsey Campbell
"The Men & Women of Rivendale" by Steve Rasnic Tem
"Bite-Me-Not, or, Fleur de Feu" by Tanith Lee

Also includes short appendices of vampire novels and movies.

The Lost Prince by Julie Kagawa

Don't look at Them. Never let Them know you can see Them.

That is Ethan Chase's unbreakable
rule. Until the fey he avoids at all costs—including his
reputation—begin to disappear, and Ethan is attacked. Now he must change
the rules to protect his family. To save a girl he never thought he'd
dare to fall for.

Ethan thought he had protected
himself from his older sister's world—the land of Faery. His previous
time in the Iron Realm left him with nothing but fear and disgust for
the world Meghan Chase has made her home, a land of myth and talking
cats, of magic and seductive enemies. But when destiny comes for Ethan,
there is no escape from a danger long, long forgotten.

The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa

In a future world, vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.

Allison Sekemoto survives in the
Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew
scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.

Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them.
The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie
herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die…or become one of
the monsters.

Faced with her own mortality,
Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the
rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough
without human blood, and you will go mad.

Then Allie is forced to flee into
the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of
humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that
killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless
creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.

But it isn't easy to pass for
human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside
her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.

I'm also tossing in my own Ashen Twilight series (first 2 books).

For centuries, a group of immortals consisting of Nightwalkers,  Lycans and Shifter Elves have lived under mortal eyes. Banning together for safety and survival, they created the group of houses lead by a select group of Patriarchs and Regents. Outside of the mortal realm lives the Aziza fairies. A benevolent race of immortals whose main job is to assist human hunters on their quests. Much of what they know of humans are from their studies and what they know of other immortals are from books about fairytales and mythology.

The world of the mortal realm and the fairy realm are about to collide.

The Life and Death of Lily Drake Release! Now Available!

"Fans of Charlaine Harris and TRUE BLOOD will find much to enjoy in Michelle Nelson's cracking, sanguine debut. Dark, funny, audacious and written with a confidence that belies this as her first effort, LIFE AND DEATH OF LILY DRAKE dispenses with the idea that vampires are pasty, maudlin, emo-types and restores them to all their brutal bloodthirsty glory. And in terms of heroines to root for, I daresay Lily Drake gives poor 'ol Sookie a run for her money."

- Kealan Patrick Burke, Bram Stoker Award-Winning author of THE TURTLE BOY and KIN.

For Lily Drake, slaying vampires is easy...

Dating them is the hard part.

Lily Drake is your everyday hard-working single mom…until a gorgeous vampire shows up on her front door who she mistakenly assumes is her blind date for the evening. As one crazy scenario after another unfolds, Lily finds herself falling in love with two vampires, slaying the evil ones, and being prophesied as the savior of the entire undead race.

Deciding between pizza and Chinese take-out will no longer be one of the hard decisions facing Lily Drake once she is immersed into vampire society. Humanity or immortality? That doesn't hold a candle against this question - which of the two handsome vampire cousins?

The Life and Death of Lily Drake is not your typical vampire love story. It’s a tale about the humorous mistakes a woman makes simply trying to survive not only life, but the dating scene. How will Lily manage working full-time, taking care of her young son and fighting the undead at every turn?

Lily will have to figure it out, but who better to save the world than a mom?

EXCLUSIVE BOOK BIRTHDAY DISCOUNT!

Buy the book now at Inkspell Publishing Store and enjoy a special EXCLUSIVE 30% discount! Offer valid only till October 15th!
Also, available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and The Book Depository amongst others.

Halloween Sucks - Says Lily Drake Blog Hop - Q&A

It's day 2 of the Halloween Sucks Lily Drake Blog Hop and today we have a special treat for all the hoppers out there.

We invited author T. Michelle Nelson to tell us a little bit about her writing life and her upcoming release in this Q&A. Check it out and don't forget to enter the raffle for some cool Lily Drake swag!

AWD: When did you decide you wanted to be a writer?

TMN: I don’t
think I ever set out to be a writer, I just enjoy writing.

AWD: How would you describe the genre in which you do most of
your writing?

TMN: Paranormal Romance is how it’s always classified, but I like to
think of it as vampire romance with a touch of dark humor.

AWD: Who is your target audience?

TMN: Anyone who likes a love
story and enjoys laughing… and of course doesn’t mind a little blood here and
there.

AWD: Do you write everyday? How much time do you spend on your
writing?

TMN: I don’t write every day. I write when I really feel like it and am
excited about it. I really don’t want my writing to feel like a chore, and I
think when I try to write and I’m not totally into it the story suffers.

AWD: Which aspects of the work that you put into the book did
you find most difficult?

TMN: This may sound funny, but the most difficult part
of the process was choosing a title.  I
went through about a million really bad and cheesy ideas.

AWD: Which did you enjoy most?

TMN: Seeing the cover for the first
was really amazing. The whole cover reveal is a real treat.  Plus I love the publicity.  Interviews, talking to people about my book,
meeting people, I’m definitely not one of those introverted writers.  I enjoy talking as much as writing.

AWD: What will your next book be about?

My next book is the
second installment of the Lily Drake series. It will continue with Lily’s
story.

AWD: What would you say has been your most significant
achievement as a writer?

TMN: When my mother finished reading my book and told me
that she liked it.

Halloween Sucks, says Lily Drake Blog Hop!! October 1st - 5th

It's the month of all things paranormal and AWD has some wonderful goodies in store for all you readers out there!

First up is the amazing Halloween Sucks Blog Hop sponsored by Inkspell Publishing to celebrate the upcoming release of The Life and Death of Lily Drake. I'm excited about this release because the book features one of my fave paranormal creatures, vampires!

I have always loved vampires since I read about them as a kid. Normally they would be evil blood sucking creatures intent on killing anything in their path, but with the arrival of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles my vampire world was turned upside down. Rice introduced a vampire community that loved, lived and desired much that resembled our own humanity. Most importantly she introduced the sexy brat prince, the vampire Lestat de Lioncourt. Lestat had his shortcomings that earned him the title of being a brat and he had less than savory views on humans he deemed lesser than he, but he was written in such a way that made him intriguing and irresistible. For the longest, he was my favorite vampire and I loved his portrayal by Tom Cruise in the 1994 flick Interview With the Vampire (my fave!) but then came Henry Fitzroy, the illegitimate son and prince of Henry VIII.

The Lifetime tv series Blood Ties introduced me to the handsome, sexy and heroic Henry played by the equally yummy Kyle Schmid. I loved how seductive Kyle played Henry and despite his youthfulness, he brought an ageless quality to Henry that really made me believe he had lived and loved throughout the century. One of my favorite moments featured Henry talking about this "skirt" that he was "bumping uglies with" while on a stakeout with Vicki, our heroine. The 20s lingo and Jersey accent was the icing on the cake!

My favorites also included Blade (kick butt vampire, saving the world one evil vamp at a time and looking good while doing it), Nick Night from Forever Knight (tortured, sexy vampire detective searching for redemption) and Bela Lugosi in Browning's Dracula (the smooth, suave vampire that started it all).

If I had to choose and absolute favorite...wow, it would be a tough one.

I'd have to go with one for every day of the week and then rotate over again. I feel it's only fair. ;-)

Tune in tomorrow for a Q&A with T. Michelle Nelson author of the Life & Death of Lily Drake!
