Dug Pinnick From King’s X On This Month’s Groove – The No Treble Podcast
Dug Pinnick is this month’s conversation on Groove – The No Treble Podcast.
You can listen the new episode right here: Groove – The No Treble Podcast – Episode #85 – Dug Pinnick.
Who is Dug Pinnick ?
I had heard of the band King’s X a few times in the mid-eighties. I was on the cusp of becoming a music journalist, and the entire genre of rock music enraptured me. Everything from The Who and Rush to Led Zeppelin and KISS and beyond. In 1989, my world was rocked by the King’s X album, Gretchen Goes To Nebraska. It was just something about the power that came from these three unique individuals, and a band that was – once again – re-envisioning what rock and roll could be with a very progressive and heavy slant. dUg Pinnick is not just an incredible bass player, but he is a unique singer and songwriter. Look no further than the vast discography of Kings X. It starts in 1988’s, Out of the Silent Planet, and bleeds all the way to 2008 with XV. If you don’t get enough out of the 15+ King’s X albums, dUg has also recorded four solo albums. He’s been a part of numerous side projects and has had multiple guest appearances on a myriad of songs and albums. dUg is one of the most respected musicians and bass players on the scene today. King’s X will be hitting the road (virus permitting) in the UK later this year. dUg is also busy promoting his latest solo effort, Joy Bomb. Enjoy the conversation…
What is Groove – The No Treble Podcast?
This is an ambitious effort. This will be a fascinating conversation. Our goal at Groove is to build the largest oral history of bass players. Why Groove? Most of the content about the bass revolves around gear, playing techniques, and more technical chatter. For us, bassists are creative artists with stories to tell. They are a force to be reckon with. These are the stories and conversation that we will capture. To create this oral history of why these artists chose the bass, what their creative lives are like, and where inspiration can be found.

How To Present Your Best Digital Self In 2022
Your digital media catch-up is right here.
Every Tuesday – for just a few minutes – I join Heather Backman (my old buddy from her days on CHOM FM) on the air at Jack 103 (Rogers Sports & Media) to give a quick blast about the current state of technology, media and Internet culture. We’re calling the segment Tech Tuesday (and we do it in just a few minutes).
What is Tech Tuesday?
If you ever find yourself wondering… What, exactly, is the point of TikTok? How can I make myself look better on a Zoom? Reddit? What’s that about? How do I help my kids be safer online? Who’s the latest creator and streamer that I should be checking out?
You are not alone.
This is what Heather Backman and I discussed this morning over on Jack 103 FM for a couple of minutes:
Are you tired of resolutions and other plans that don’t stick? How about you kick off the New Year with your own “digital audit.” Let’s get ourselves updated with our best “digital selves.” How do we do this?
Google yourself. See how you show up and where you show up in the search engines. It’s not easy to change/manipulate the search rankings, but knowing how the world sees you is an important first step.Update your profile picture. Use something recent. Use a filter (if you have to ;), but make it consistent across all of your platforms and apps.Update your LinkedIn profile. Most people let their LinkedIn profile lag or miss out on the new functionality that LinkedIn adds throughout the year. Make sure to update any new job titles, charitable work, etc… And, if you’re not on LinkedIn… get on LinkedIn!If you have your own website, podcast, blog or YouTube channel, make sure everything is as current as possible.Check all of your social feeds. Make them consistent, delete the content that might be contentious, etc…What other tips and tricks would you add?
App of the Week: Scribble – a fun little game where you get to decode someone’s scribbling.
Once the segment goes live on Jack 103, I will post it here for you to listen in, learn, share and engage….

Len Herstein On Vigilance, Complacency And Improved Performance – This Week’s Six Pixels of Separation Podcast
Episode #808 of Six Pixels of Separation is now live and ready for you to listen to.
I first heard about Len Herstein because he was running an ever-popular live event called, Brand ManageCamp. A few years later we spoke, and he asked me to give one of the keynote presentations (virtual… because… ya know…). From there we exchanged messages from time to time and became quick friends. Len also understands the danger of complacency. He just wishes he had known earlier. Now, as the author of Be Vigilant! Strategies to Stop Complacency, Improve Performance, and Safeguard Success. Your Business and Relationships Depend on It, he’s on a mission to empower organizations and individuals to safeguard the success they’ve worked so hard to achieve. Len has a three decade history in business, marketing, and entrepreneurism. Before founding ManageCamp Inc and producing 19 annual iterations of the world-acclaimed Brand ManageCamp marketing conference, Len worked in brand marketing and innovation for Coca-Cola, The Campbell Soup Company, and Nabisco. Len is also a Reserve Sheriff’s Deputy with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado. In this volunteer position, he works up to 850 hours a year as a State-certified peace officer on the patrol team – for free. Inspired to make a positive contribution to the safety and well-being of the citizens of Douglas County, Len works to be part of the solution of creating better relationships between police and the community. It wasn’t long before Len realized he was learning valuable lessons through his law enforcement training that could be applied directly back to his business. The most important lesson, and one of the very first he learned, was the concept that complacency kills and vigilance saves. Now Len has developed actionable strategies to help business leaders stop complacency, improve performance, and safeguard success through vigilance. Enjoy the conversation…

Six Links Worthy of Your Attention #601
Is there one link, story, picture or thought that you saw online this week that you think somebody you know must see?
My friends: Alistair Croll (Solve for Interesting, Tilt the Windmill, Interesting Bits, HBS, chair of Strata, Startupfest, FWD50, and Scaletechconf; author of Lean Analytics and some other books), Hugh McGuire (Rebus Foundation, PressBooks, LibriVox) and I decided that every week the three of us are going to share one link for one another (for a total of six links) that each individual feels the other person “must see.”
Check out these six links that we’re recommending to one another:
A bleak outlook for public sector tech – Sean Boots. “Sean Boots is a Canadian hero. An early part of the Canadian Digital Service that has moved Canada ahead – significantly – in how it delivers digital services, he’s also a clear writer unafraid to speak hard truths. This article explains exactly why we can’t have nice things, not just in Canada, but abroad. Anyone who cares about modernizing government needs to start by reading this, and sharing it with everyone they know.” (Alistair for Hugh). Slaughterbots – if human: kill() – Future of Life Institute . “This might seem like a downer for the New Year. On November 30th, New Zealand called for a ban on autonomous killer robots — those that use algorithms to target their victims without human control. Wars are won asymmetrically, and it’s unlikely we’ll be able to prevent those who don’t care about regulations from building dangerous machines. You should be worried about this much more than you are; the Future of Life Institute put together this nightmarish video that shows what such things might look like. Oh, and most major countries with sizeable militaries rejected New Zealand’s call for a ban. Have we not watched enough science fiction yet?” (Alistair for Mitch). Helen De La Rosa & Munir Hossn – Scott’s Bass Lessons . “You like drum and bass music? That’s what this is, right?” (Hugh for Alistair). The Greatest Guitar Solos of All Time – Guitar Player . “Among other things I learned via this article: When Pete Townsend was asked to play the solo in Michael Jackson‘s ‘Beat It’, he declined, but suggested Eddie Van Halen, who said ‘yes’.” (Hugh for Mitch). The Beat’s 24 Best Comics of 2021 – The Beat . “Let me repeat myself: I am a comic book nerd. If you’ve never read comic books, and believe that they’re just superheroes in tights, wow are you missing out on a huge part of literature, art and culture. Here’s a list of some of the best comic books that came out this year – many of which are a part of my collection. If you want superheroes, sure… here are some. If you’re looking for something really different, check out titles like The Department of Truth, The Good Asian and a few that are not on the list like the Reckless series by Ed Brubaker, Cherry Blackbird, Mazebook and/or hit me up for some other great titles. Happy reading!” (Mitch for Alistair). Old Book Illustrations . “I like free stock photography. I like books. I like illustrations (especially from older publications). So… here ya go! A great search engine for images with a particular slant towards Victorian and French Romantic Illustrations. So much goodness is here… just play around and enjoy… a great find!” (Mitch for Hugh).Feel free to share these links and add your picks on Twitter, Facebook, in the comments below or wherever you play.

Six Links Worthy of Your Attention #600
The Future Is Not Only Useless, It’s Expensive – Gawker. “I’ve been trying to understand the Web3/Metaverse/NFT noise from first principles. There’s something to it, but that thing isn’t collectible art—it’s digital identity. Just like your physical wallet, your digital one will store money and identification and receipts proving you own things. It’s that simple. But there’s a bunch of noise around the NFT bubble, and this Gawker piece is a delicious takedown.” (Alistair for Hugh). Santa Brand Book – Quiet Room . “If you were rebranding the jolly elf, it might look like this. Brilliant satire, and uncomfortably close to what agencies do. Plus, there’s an easter egg at the end—a link to the meeting that produced this gorgeous travesty.” (Alistair for Mitch). The Lock-Picker, the Lockmaker, and the Odyssey to Expose a Major Security Flaw – Bloomberg BusinessWeek . “Did you know there is a community of ‘white hat lock pickers’ who post how-to videos of lock picking to YouTube (partly in an effort to get lock manufacturers to improve their designs), and that Covid has seen an explosion of members of this community, and that a guy from Drummondville, Quebec found an easy exploit for one of the most common key-pad locks out there, and the company mostly ignored his efforts to get them to fix it?” (Hugh for Alistair). “Corrosive Communities”: How A Facebook Fight Over Wind Power Predicts the Future of Local Politics in America – BuzzFeed . “There’s a subreddit called awfuleverything and that’s how I feel about this story.” (Hugh for Mitch). Six Links Worth of Your Attention Hits #600 – Six Pixels of Separation . “I can’t just let this moment pass, so I’ll leave this usual space (where I think of a link that Alistair might like) to brag a little bit. For 11.5 years, Alistair, Hugh and I have been choosing one link for each other – never missing a week. So, 3600 links have already been shared… and there is no plan to stop. I can’t think of many things that I have done with this level of consistency, but here we are… our 600th weekly installment. It’s a true act of joy. I can’t wait to see what links they share, and I am usually quite blown away by the selection (and how they flow into one another) – especially considering the fact that we never know who’s sending what. If you’ve enjoyed these links as much as we have sourcing them for you… thank you! Here’s to my good friends, Alistair and Hugh and many more decades of link exchanges! Cheers!” (Mitch for Alistair… and Hugh). Brian Eno on NFTs & Automaticism – The Crypto Syllabus . “I know this about technology: I hate being dismissive about new things that seem nutty but also could also become the foundation of our future. I was there when people thought they didn’t need a web browser, email, a smartphone, email on their phone, social media, blogs, podcasting, online dating, e-commerce… and just about everything in between. There’s a current swath of criticism for all things Web3 (or Web 3.0) and many of it’s underlying technology. I love how Brian Eno thinks, so now I’m stuck at this crossroad. ‘I’ve been approached several times to ‘make an NFT.’ So far nothing has convinced me that there is anything worth making in that arena. ‘Worth making’ for me implies bringing something into existence that adds value to the world, not just to a bank account.’ With that, he’s got some interesting perspectives and I just love it when Eno muses about the future…” (Mitch for Hugh).Feel free to share these links and add your picks on Twitter, Facebook, in the comments below or wherever you play.

The Hype And Realities Of Web3
What Is Web3 and Why Should You Care? – Gizmodo.
Web 1.0 was static websites.
Web 2.0 was social media – a more dynamic/editable web experience.
Web3 or Web 3.0 is all about decentralization and more democracy. Think cryptocurrency, blockchain, NFTs and the creator economy.
Is this the dawn of a new era?
“Those skeptical about Web3 and its associated technologies might say that there’s still a very real risk of a lot of the generated wealth and value remaining out of reach for the vast majority when it comes to cryptocurrencies, NFTs, and the rest of Web3—so the rich get richer again. What’s more, many of the perceived villains of Web 2.0 are already making moves in Web3, it’s worth noting.”
Here’s a counter-perspective to the power of Web3: The Web3 Fraud – usenix.
App of the Week: p2p Chat – a free and open source video conference project (think Zoom… and others for free).
Once the segment goes live on Jack 103, I will post it here for you to listen in, learn, share and engage….
