Kevin Kelly On Tech, Optimism And Living Well – This Week’s Six Pixels of Separation Podcast
Episode #889 of Six Pixels of Separation – The ThinkersOne Podcast is now live and ready for you to listen to
Let’s delve into the kaleidoscopic journey of Kevin Kelly, a titan of technology and innovation, who launched Wired magazine in 1993 (and happens to be one of my favorite writers and Thinkers about “what’s next?”). After seven years as Executive Editor, he still holds the fort as Senior Maverick. Twice during his reign, Wired clinched the National Magazine Awards for General Excellence – the magazine industry’s equivalent to Oscars. Flashback to 1984-1990, Kevin wore the hats of both publisher and editor of Whole Earth Review, a journal serving unconventional conceptual news. With Kevin at the helm, it earned the distinction of being the first consumer magazine to cover virtual reality, ecological restoration, and Internet culture, among other trend-setting topics. His 1988 creation, Signal, evaluated emerging digital technologies, effectively setting the stage for Wired magazine. Later, in 2003, he crafted the Cool Tools website to feature daily tool reviews, culminating in a bestseller book, and eventually, the weekly recommendation list, Recomendo, boasting over 60,000 subscribers (of which I am one… and never miss an issue). Kevin’s early digital footprint can be traced back to 1985 when he helped lay the foundation for The WELL, one of the pioneers in forming online communities. His tech experiments didn’t stop there – he launched Cyberthon in 1990, the first-ever 24-hour virtual reality event, and co-founded the annual Hackers’ Conference. Kevin’s pen dances across a variety of subjects, from machines turning biological (Out of Control, 1994) to digital economy rules (New Rules for the New Economy, 1998) and the inevitable technological trends of the future (The Inevitable, 2016). His works echo in pieces like 1000 True Fans, and his latest book, Excellent Advice For Living. With a knack for photography, Kevin’s snapshots have found home in Life and other national magazines. His nomadic photography journeys culminated in a 3-volume magnum opus, Vanishing Asia, preserving the fading cultures of Asia through 9,000 pictures. As a founding board member of The Long Now Foundation, Kevin promotes long-term thinking, epitomized by their 10,000-year clock and library project. Kevin Kelly’s journey illustrates a passion for innovation and an unyielding curiosity about the future. I couldn’t be more excited to talk with him. Enjoy the conversation…

SPOS #889 – Kevin Kelly On Tech, Optimism And Living Well
Welcome to episode #890 of Six Pixels of Separation – The ThinkersOne Podcast.
Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation – The ThinkersOne Podcast – Episode #890. I often think of Pico Iyer. It could be while I travel… it could be while we were in Covid lockdown. His words truly resonate. Pico is an acclaimed wordsmith who began his journey in Oxford, England in 1957. With the King’s Scholarship at Eton and a Demyship at Magdalen College, Oxford in his kitty, Pico’s academic prowess earned him a Congratulatory Double First and the highest accolades in English Literature. In 1980, he joined the teaching fraternity at Harvard, earning a second Master’s degree and an honorary doctorate in Humane Letters. Since 1982, Pico has delved into full-time writing, weaving tales on diverse subjects from the Dalai Lama (a personal friend of his) to Islamic mysticism, and from the Cuban Revolution to globalism. His body of work encompasses over 15 books, including enduring bestsellers such as, Video Night in Kathmandu, The Lady and the Monk, and The Art of Stillness. These literary gems have been translated into over 20 languages, amplifying his voice across the globe. Besides his own titles, Pico has penned introductions for over 70 other books, composed a screenplay for Miramax, and written a libretto. Complementing his book writing, Pico has contributed upwards of 100 articles annually to international publications such as Time, The New York Times, and the Financial Times. His knack for insightful storytelling has led him to the TED stage (which is where we first met and connected), where his four talks have garnered more than 10 million views. Pico’s life beautifully balances between solitude and society. Since 1992, he has divided his time between a Benedictine hermitage in Big Sur, California, a sanctuary that nurtures his craft, and suburban Japan, where he engages with the rhythm of daily life. His journey underscores the harmonious fusion of stillness and movement, solitude and engagement – a fitting testimony to the art he so eloquently writes about. HIs latest book, The Half Known Life – In Search Of Paradise is one that I read with stillness and slowness… like a fine wine. Paradise is many things to many people, and this book is an incredible journey to uncover it. Enjoy the conversation…

Six Links Worthy of Your Attention #682
Is there one link, story, picture or thought that you saw online this week that you think somebody you know must see?
My friends: Alistair Croll (Solve for Interesting, Tilt the Windmill, Interesting Bits, HBS, chair of Strata, Startupfest, FWD50, and Scaletechconf; author of Lean Analytics and some other books), Hugh McGuire (Rebus Foundation, PressBooks, LibriVox) and I decided that every week the three of us are going to share one link for one another (for a total of six links) that each individual feels the other person “must see.”
Check out these six links that we’re recommending to one another:
ArcGIS Ocean Hypoxia . “When the oxygen level in oceans falls below 2 milligrams per liter, marine organisms die. If we didn’t have enough to worry about with climate change, much of the ocean is becoming toxic to life, and with it, many of the food sources we take for granted. We live in a time where our ability to sense the world is just astonishing; this map from Esri lets you explore ocean hypoxia (it’s just one of many such maps, which show wind direction, ocean temperature, and more).” (Alistair for Hugh). All The Right Moves – Twitter . “The Roland Emmerich blockbuster about an alien invasion has a fascinating history. One of my guilty pleasures is the Twitter account @ATRightMovies, which details stories behind films. Apparently the movie made 70 fake news broadcasts featuring actual reporters. Some of them aired on TV, though most were fodder for background scenes. This one is pretty convincing!” (Alistair for Mitch). The Case for Software Criticism – Wired . “Why isn’t there a more formal field of (academic) software criticism. We have whole university departments dedicated to art criticism, literature criticism, film criticism… where is the software criticism?” (Hugh for Alistair). Who Builds The Internet? – Byline . “It’s amazing that Wikipedia remains as useful and free as ever. Here’s a article on the editors, people who make Wikipedia work. ‘In the wonderful world of Wikipedia, words are like bricks, citations are walls, and these editors are architects. Architects whose job is never done. Architects whose job is as big as the internet itself.'” (Hugh for Mitch). Remember Bored Apes? They’re Almost Worthless Now – The Byte . “I want to be careful when I share stories like this. Read more than the headline. Do I believe in the concept of NFTs? I do. Do I believe that in the near-future, we will find tremendous value (and growth) in digital assets (like NFTs) that are scarce in creation or provide provenance? I do. Deeply. Still, it’s hard not to marvel at how quickly things come undone in tech. It could be Clubhouse or any other number of platforms or new tech (many of which seem like a really great and viable idea). This story has a certain taste to it, because of the media attention versus value that was ‘created’. This quote says it all: ‘Bieber, Paris Hilton, and Madonna, among other investors, filed a class-action lawsuit in December 2022, arguing that they were duped into buying the NFTs by other celebrities who didn’t disclose they were financially invested.’” (Mitch for Alistair). Yuval Noah Harari – Human Nature, Intelligence, Power, and Conspiracies – Lex Fridman Podcast . “I was hopeful that Lex Fridman would make this interview with Yuval Noah Harari happen… and here we are. Harari is a really big brain. If you have not read his books, Sapiens, Homo Deus, etc. I highly recommend his work. Beyond being an academic, he is a deep critic (with a fascinating angle) on artificial intelligence. And, if that were not enough, Lex also tackles politics (Israel, in particular) as this interview follows a conversation Lex had with Benjamin Netanyahu. Lots of perspectives and insights, if you really want your brain to get a solid workout. Enjoy.” (Mitch for Hugh and video is below).Feel free to share these links and add your picks on Twitter, Facebook, in the comments below or wherever you play.

Write Expectations – The Generative AI Chronicles
It’s hard to keep up on everything happening in the world of Generative AI and tools like ChatGPT.
It’s hard because things are improving, evolving and devolving at a very fast pace.
That’s usually a sign of excitement (for those who use it).
That’s usually a sign of skepticism (for those who are… skeptics).
Here’s what we’re seeing this week (can you spot the trends and the threads?)…
It looks like ChatGPT’s traffic is down (about 10%)… some think it’s because the kids are on vacation from school while others believe that the excitement might be waning. My two cents? Everyone had a blog back in the early 2000s until everyone realized that they’re not serious/regular writers/creators. Often the excitement of what the tool can do then trends towards those who really need to use it in their lives. Perhaps, we’re just seeing the froth go, while the actual good stuff is used by those who really need it?With that, some studies now suggest that using ChatGPT can turn bad writers into better ones? This is interesting. Many believed that tools like this would help those who can’t write to create something mediocre… and help those with the writing skills be more creative. Maybe it’s all of that and the ability for people to learn/get better as they use the tool? Did spell-checking and grammar tools make people worse or better at those skills? It’s a fair argument to make that seeing your mistakes is a great teacher. Now, for those who are really using ChatGPT for writing, it can actually increase your writing productivity… by 40%?!? Imagine if your writing tasks had that kind of productivity bump… maybe ChatGPT can get you there? But… but… it’s not all bellyrubs and roses…
It seems like Sam Altman (from OpenAI and the creators of ChatGPT and Dall-e) are being investigated by US regulators over data privacy and wrong answers. So, Altman goes in front of congress and asks for AI regulation, but it starts in an area that may not be ideal for the company, and… the information was leaked by someone in the government to the media, which doesn’t bode well for a true partnership between AI companies and the government in terms of establishing trust and credibility. The competition is real. Anthropic (which is a $4 billion OpenAI competitor) debuted a new AI chatbot called, Claude. It has some interesting differences from ChatGPT including the ability to summarize 75,000 words to ChatGPT’s 3000-word limit. Its information cutoff is early 2023 compared to ChatGPT’s September 2021 and more. I’ve tried Claude, and it seems quite effective as well. Claude is new… and there are others.Lots and lots going on in the Generative AI world.

Adam Alter On The Anatomy Of A Breakthrough – This Week’s Six Pixels of Separation Podcast
Episode #888 of Six Pixels of Separation – The ThinkersOne Podcast is now live and ready for you to listen to
It’s always exciting to have Adam Alter back on the show. Adam is the scholarly sherpa navigating the neural networks of New York University‘s Stern School of Business. As an acclaimed Professor of Marketing and Robert Stansky Teaching Excellence Faculty Fellow, he finds his second academic home in NYU’s Psychology Department. Adam, however, is not confined to the halls of academia. He’s also a celebrated author whose ink has graced the pages of three bestsellers, exploring the compelling world of behavioral addiction, subconscious influences and how to get unstuck. In his book Irresistible, Adam delves into our modern-day addiction epidemic, examining the compulsive behaviors attached to our smartphones, the internet, video games, and online shopping. Meanwhile, Drunk Tank Pink peels back the layers of our environment, unveiling the hidden forces that shape our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Adam’s genius lies in his unique approach to social psychology and decision-making. He shines a spotlight on the surprising impacts of subtle environmental cues on human cognition and behavior. His fascinating findings have claimed their space in numerous academic journals and media outlets worldwide. His latest book (which I devoured), Anatomy of a Breakthrough, promises to free us from the shackles of our mind’s inertia. Whether it’s a midlife crisis, writer’s block, or a stagnant job, we all face friction that stymies our growth. But Adam’s solution, the friction audit, could be the key to unlocking our full potential. By conquering friction in our heart (emotions), head (thoughts), and habit (behaviors), we can course-correct our journey to success. Through this brilliant blend of scientific research, personal stories, and inspiring examples, Adam reassures us: getting stuck is not a glitch, but a feature on the road to thriving. With the right strategies, we can all reach our loftiest goals. So, are you ready to break free? Before we do, I’m also honored that Adam is one of our Thinkers on the ThinkersOne platform. Six Links Worthy of Your Attention #681
Malignant Intelligence: Prompt engineering and software archeology – Alasdair Allan – NDC Conferences – YouTube . “Alasdair Allan is a hacker’s hacker. I’ve had him onstage at Pandemonio, Strata, and FWD50, and he’s always got fresh takes on the perverse outcomes of technology. In his day job, he heads up documentation for the Raspberry Pi folks, but his curious brain can’t stop making things. Here’s a great keynote from NDC Oslo that talks about some of the consequences of generative AI.” (Alistair for Hugh). Foo Fighters 2011 Tour Rider A Smash Hit – The Smoking Gun . “Everyone’s heard the legendary Van Halen tour rider that required the venue to remove all brown M&Ms from the band’s snack bowls. While David Lee Roth later defended the tactic as a way to ensure people had read the contract (a claim that’s been largely debunked) band riders are an art form. Leave it to the Foo Fighters to pen a rider — complete with schematics for ice cube preparation — that ‘reaches new heights of absurdist brilliance’.” (Alistair for Mitch). Can a City Feed Itself? – CityLab – Bloomberg . “I don’t have a backyard, but I have a rooftop terrace, and for the past few years I’ve been experimenting with container gardening on my roof, trying to grow tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and more. Growing things successfully is hard, especially in the harsh (hot, sunny and windy) environment of a rooftop, where all nutrients must be somehow added to the closed ecosystem. Still, we eat chard and lettuce from the garden just about every day starting in late June, cucumbers are incredibly prolific early. And there’s a flurry of tomatoes in August. But if I had to feed my family from the roof, well, we’d get pretty skinny, pretty fast. Still, over the years I’ve started to figure things out, with the biggest advance this year, when I added bokashi compost (a Japanese method of fermenting/pickling your kitchen waste), which has been a game changer for health and production of my plants. It’s also been gratifying to transform most of our kitchen waste into food-generating inputs. This year is the first time I can just about imagine some future where our little rooftop could provide a decent amount of food — were I to add potatoes, beets, turnips and more, but still it’s far off. Could cities, with real creativity and focus, become anywhere close to self-sufficient in food production? It’s never seemed likely to me, but for the first time this year, I can conjure up a future where this is the case.” (Hugh for Alistair). The Biologist Blowing Our Minds – Nautilus . “With AI overlords around the corner, or at least better at writing emails than most of us, and with new discoveries about music-loving mold and cells that just want to be free to do what they want, the particular specialness of humans keeps getting harder to define. That’s probably a good thing.” (Hugh for Mitch). AI and the automation of work – Benedict Evans . “My one (major) lesson in life is this: Never stop reading. This is, increasingly, important when it’s an important topic (like artificial intelligence and generative ai tools). This goes well beyond the hype cycle. It’s hard not to think about the implications of a world where we *might* bring forth a more intelligent being than humans. Scary? Yes. Important? Yes. Knowing that I don’t have all of the answers, and watching so many people (mostly much smarter than I am) thinking out loud with these types of articles is a blessing. With that, Benedict Evans is a thoughtful thought leader, and this is his take on what makes AI different (and similar) to other forms of disruptive automation innovations that we’ve seen over the last 200 years. This is an important read, but it’s not the only read. So, keep reading…” (Mitch for Alistair). A Necessary Imagination – Morgan Harper Nichols . “I have been on a reading journey this past year. Expanding beyond the comfort of business and non-fiction books into the realm of fiction, fantasy, science fiction and beyond. I have been thoroughly enjoying the recommendations of friends (and have, admittedly, enjoyed the many recommendations from the #BookTok crowd on TikTok). I think this article came to me via Patrick Tanguay’s amazing Sentiers newsletter (which I highly recommend), and it just landed at the perfect time. I believe that writing fiction is an amazing and difficult art form… and the act of world-building just boggles my mind. It’s just such a creative and expansive way to create. Take a read… and imagine a world of your own design. Oh, and if you are curious, I am currently reading The Ferryman by Justin Cronin via recommendation from Tom Webster.” (Mitch for Hugh).Feel free to share these links and add your picks on Twitter, Facebook, in the comments below or wherever you play.

Think, Share, Grow – ThinkersOne Ushers In A New Era Of Accessible Expertise
ThinkersOne continues to be an exciting journey.
In case you’re not up to speed…
We launched ThinkersOne with the idea of making thought leadership accessible to anyone.
When I say “we,” it’s just me and Aubrey Rosenhek (my partner at Six Pixels Group and one of my three business partners from Twist Image/Mirum – we’ve been working together for twenty years).
We do this by enabling companies to buy bite-sized and personalized video experiences (live and recorded) from some of the best Thinkers in the world.
We have big brains like Tom Peters, Whitney Johnson, Jonathan Fields, Laura Huang, Michael Bungay Stanier, Dorie Clark, Laura Gassner Otting, Jay Baer and so many more.
In the past few months we’ve added experts like Rita McGrath, Julian Treasure, Amy Landino, Gena Cox, Natalie Nixon, Stacey Copas… and we keep adding new Thinkers every week.
What we believe…
It more important than ever for companies and organizations to truly engage their employees and clients by making every meeting more valuable. Now, more than ever, startups, small businesses and non-profits need access to these big brains, who are (usually) too expensive to access. It should be as easy for companies to buy personalized and bite-sized thought leadership as it is to buy anything else online. The ability to personalize a form and drop the payment on a credit card makes it simple and easy for companies and executives to do (and repeat). This is a great way for Thinkers to join everyday meetings, gatherings, lunch & learns, and events… and not focus solely on the big customer summits or industry association events. On Friday, July 14th, 2023 (tomorrow), we are bringing these elite experts to Startupfest 2023!
If you’re attending Startupfest this week, join me and get virtual access to some of the world’s greatest minds. These Thinkers will share their latest big ideas and then stick around to jam on yours.
In this very exclusive session, we will spend time with:
Jenny Blake – Need to better organize your brain? Podcaster and Author of Pivot and Free Time – Lose the Busywork, Love Your Business, is at your service with systems and ideas to create the most efficient you. Mark Bowden – Tell your best story even better with the person voted the #1 body language professional in the world, author of 4 bestselling books on body language/communications, and co-host of the YouTube sensation, The Behavior Panel. Thread Carefully – Meta’s Threads Takes On Twitter
It would be IMPOSSIBLE for us to not discuss Threads – the new Twitter clone via Mark Zuckerberg and the Instagram folks.
What do we know so far?
Threads hit 100 million signups in just five days.
For context, ChatGPT was the fastest-growing consumer product by getting 100 million users after two months.
Plus, Threads hasn’t even launched in the EU because… wait for it…
Privacy concerns.
All of this is making Zuckerberg look good in comparison to Elon Musk, which is surprising when you consider how much Facebook/Meta has been challenged by their own consumer data and privacy issues.
People just hate Twitter/Musk that much more?
Also, Threads is a mobile app only – no web/desktop version (yet).
So… with no real search functionality, direct messaging, hashtags or even an ability to follow only the people you select, it’s an impressive start.
Will it work?
Many believe that Threads is our option to get it “right.”
Meta executives are using lines like, “a more positive public square,” and a place for people “that never really embraced Twitter.”
Many believe that Threads is simply a Twitter copy, and it will never be able to replace/replicate what people (still) love about Twitter (and it’s just dirty to steal the idea, in the first place).
Musk is threatening to sue Zuck because it is, essentially, a Twitter rip-off.
Most of the time, Meta’s copycat experiments have failed. But a small number of cloned or acquired features have thrived.
From its TikTok-ish Reels to its Snapchat-ty Stories… both of those rips have paid off handsomely.
With that, Twitter traffic was down 5% for the first two full days after Threads launched, and is down 11% compared with the same days in 2022.
Because of the integration of Threads with Instagram, there is a built in network of 1.7 billion users, and the app seems to be scaling and working very well considering the mad dash of people signing up.
So… where does this land?
Latest and greatest new addition to your social media portfolio of apps?
A quick burn in popularity and then a deep nose-dive because it’s not much more than a Twitter clone?
Something in the middle?

Tiffani Bova On The Experience And Growth Mindset – This Week’s Six Pixels of Separation Podcast
Episode #887 of Six Pixels of Separation – The ThinkersOne Podcast is now live and ready for you to listen to
As Global Growth Evangelist at Salesforce, Tiffani Bova, is truly a visionary (driven by data, getting her hands dirty in client’s work, and defining new ways to think about business). Tiffani has an audacious dedication to revolutionizing business perspectives, and she’s the cerebral powerhouse behind two important books: Growth IQ and her latest, The Experience Mindset – Changing the Way You Think About Growth. Her track record and the accolades she’s attracted speak to her acumen. She’s been named to the Thinkers50‘s roster of top global management thinkers, has lent her insights to countless publications like Harvard Business Review and Duke University Dialogue Review, and she’s an intellectual force for students at Columbia University and Wharton. Tiffani also hosts her own podcast, What’s Next! with Tiffani Bova. She also carries the title of “influencer” via her social media channels on Twitter, LinkedIn and beyond. Inc. Magazine named her as of one the Top 100 Woman In Tech. Having inspired more than half a million people across six continents with over 850 keynote presentations, Tiffani’s wisdom is universally sought. Prior to Salesforce, she was a distinguished figure in sales, marketing, and customer service, breaking new ground with innovative strategies for cloud-based solutions. Her tenure at Gartner won her the Thought Leadership award and admiration from tech’s finest for her trailblazing strategies for sales and growth. I devoured The Experience Mindset. I love how it unpacks the disconnect that businesses have between their customer experience and their employee experience, in a world where the two must be intrinsically connected.
