Justin Smolian From Dirty Honey On This Month’s Groove – The No Treble Podcast
Justin Smolian from Dirty Honey is this month’s conversation on Groove – The No Treble Podcast.
Groove – Episode #110: Justin Smolian by No Treble
You can listen the new episode right here: Groove – The No Treble Podcast – Episode #110 – Justin Smolian.
Who is Justin Smolian?
Justin Smolian and his band, Dirty Honey, are back to rock you out with their latest head-turner, Can’t Find The Breaks. Justin’s journey with Dirty Honey is akin to a rock and roll fairy tale, with a twist of gritty realism. Dirty Honey, a band that shot to fame with a no-nonsense, back-to-basics rock sound, found in Justin not just a bassist, but a sonic alchemist. He’s the guy who infuses the band’s sound with a rich bass, songwriting and playing style that brings every era of rock together into something modern. This album sees him straddling the fine line between the classic and the contemporary, plucking out rhythms that resonate with the soul of traditional rock, while flirting outrageously with modern sensibilities. But let’s rewind a bit. Before Dirty Honey, before the whirlwind of rock stardom, Justin was a student of the strings, exploring the vast terrains of the bass… and classical guitar. His early days were a melting pot of influences, a musical smorgasbord that he feasted on, each genre adding a new layer to his playing style. From jazz’s intricate melodies to the pulsating rhythms of funk, he absorbed it all, crafting a style that’s uniquely his. Fast forward to Dirty Honey, and you see these influences manifest in a style that’s as eclectic as it is electrifying. In a world where rock music constantly evolves, Justin is a beacon of both innovation and tradition. His bass playing isn’t just a part of Dirty Honey’s music; it’s the heartbeat, driving the band’s sound with an energy that’s as infectious as it is fun and fresh. His story is one of passion, dedication, and the relentless pursuit of that perfect groove. Enjoy the conversation…
What is Groove – The No Treble Podcast?
This is an ambitious effort. This will be a fascinating conversation. Our goal at Groove is to build the largest oral history of bass players. Why Groove? Most of the content about the bass revolves around gear, playing techniques, and more technical chatter. For us, bassists are creative artists with stories to tell. They are a force to be reckon with. These are the stories and conversation that we will capture. To create this oral history of why these artists chose the bass, what their creative lives are like, and where inspiration can be found.

Six Links Worthy of Your Attention #709
Is there one link, story, picture or thought that you saw online this week that you think somebody you know must see?
My friends: Alistair Croll (Solve for Interesting, Tilt the Windmill, Interesting Bits, HBS, chair of Strata, Startupfest, FWD50, and Scaletechconf; author of Lean Analytics and some other books), Hugh McGuire (Rebus Foundation, PressBooks, LibriVox) and I decided that every week the three of us are going to share one link for one another (for a total of six links) that each individual feels the other person “must see.”
Check out these six links that we’re recommending to one another:
The 9 Experiments That Will Change Your View Of Light (And Blow Your Mind) – Astrum – YouTube. “Every now and then, I stop and remember that the memory in our smartphones contains atoms that came from a collision of two stars, and that I’m only able to realize that because I’m a set of molecules arranged in a very specific way that can use energy to create order, surrounded by billions of similar patterns that have built a civilization able to launch telescopes into space. And then my brain recoils a bit, and I scroll some social media to numb the realization. Changes happens slowly, but the sheer volume of entertaining, educational material that’s now accessible to anyone online is absolutely staggering. We take it for granted, but over time it will be absolutely transformative as a species. This is a good example.” (Alistair for Hugh). Animated Short – “Paths of Hate” – By Platige Image – KIS KIS Keep It Short – YouTube . “We’re also in a renaissance of animation, with computers and algorithms working alongside humans. My partner devours animated content, and from time to time she shows me something that’s absolutely riveting. This short film is beautiful, dark, and sobering. At a time when the world seems to hate itself, it’s important to remember that the only thing that can save us is to stop fighting.” (Alistair for Mitch). The Blue Masc – The Nation . “Big ‘ole article about Lou Reed.” (Hugh for Alistair). A Brief History Of The United States’ Accents And Dialects – Smithsonian Magazine . “I just love weird accents. The USA is just filled with them.” (Hugh for Mitch). My Bassdrum Speed Record – Playing 4 Pedals At Once – 400 bpms – El Estepario Siberiano – YouTube . “There are a few concepts working together that are important to note in this video. Drum playing has changed so much in the very few decades that the current ‘rock kit’ has been around. From speed to feel to playing styles. You would think that there’s not much that hasn’t been done with the drums, at this point. You would be wrong. Musicians are artists… and artists are constantly trying to push the limits and to push those limits beyond what we would expect. Jorge Garrido (aka El Estepario Siberiano) is a drummer from Valencia, Spain who is breaking through and re-inventing the drums in some very unique ways. And this is being done from a very different angle (the minimalist drum kit, the physical tech that he uses and his amazing sense of timing and speed). And he’s not doing this through a band or songs or albums… but through YouTube videos. He is a sensation in the music world, and you don’t have to like the drums to appreciate what’s going on here. Another major concept (a trend in music these days) are these young and incredible musicians who are trying to replicate digital music on acoustic instruments (to dig into this further, check out the band Polyphia). This is an amazing video that documents, perhaps, the beginning of a new way that drummers will play…” (Mitch for Alistair). The Tyranny Of The Algorithm: Why Every Coffee Shop Looks The Same – The Guardian . “This article is (maybe) kind of what you might think it is. Homogeneity. But it’s not. How can something be local, authentic and different and, yet, everywhere you go in the world, these types of establishment are almost always exactly the same? From the article: ‘What I concluded was that they were all authentically connected to the new network of digital geography, wired together in real time by social networks. They were authentic to the internet, particularly the 2010s internet of algorithmic feeds.’ So, if you grapple with the idea that we’re living in a simulation (or The Matrix) this will only add weight to it. I loved reading this article because I do love coffee shops (especially local and authentic ones) and I am left both laughing at myself and shaking my head why it never occurred to me how ‘same’ these places all are… so, what does it mean to be authentic, and when do we know that something is unique to our actual location and not an algorithm?” (Mitch for Hugh).Feel free to share these links and add your picks on X, Facebook, in the comments below or wherever you play.

Six Links Worthy of Your Attention #708
Pete Philips Launches His Music. “A creator I’ve been following for a while is working on his first album. He’s definitely a nerd, and a good indicator of what a modern polymath can achieve. In addition to teasing tracks and showing behind-the-scenes footage, his website includes a music player and a chatbot. Sometimes it’s just fun to share a website from someone who’s clearly put a lot of work in.” (Alistair for Hugh). The Internet Is Worse Than Ever – Now What? – Kurzgesagt – In A Nutshell – YouTube . “The always-amazing Kurzgesagt tackles the toxicity of the online world, debunking filter bubbles and explaining what’s really going on in our brains that make us angry and polarized. As usual, it’s a concise, entertaining, clear explanation of how many cognitive biases and heuristics – one stacked atop another – conspire to separate us. I wish this were taught in class, with concrete examples.” (Alistair for Mitch). Very Ordinary Men – Elon Musk And The Court Biographer – The Point . “A delightfully catty takedown of Walter Isaacson‘s biography of Elon Musk, in which the writer and subject get equal attention.” (Hugh for Alistair). AI Resources For The Baffled – Paul Ford – Aboard . “A minor internet hero of mine is Paul Ford, writer, thinker and maker. Ages ago – in the early 2000s – he was the webmaster for Harper’s Magazine website, and I recall having several email exchanges with him then, helping me out with something or other I was trying to do. Paul has gone on to do a variety of cool things, most recently launching Aboard, a kind of visual reinvention of collaborative bookmarking (del.icio.us!). Here, Paul and friends are collecting articles, links and more to help you make sense of AI.” (Hugh for Mitch). The Internet Is About to Get Weird Again – Rolling Stone . “I’ve been a fan and follower of Anil Dash for a long while. Admittedly, the headline for this article in Rolling Stone caught my attention first, but then knowing it Anil was behind the keyboard, I knew it would not be hyperbole. It does seem like everything that we marveled at from the early nineties until a few years ago about the internet has turned sour. From social media to search engines, it smells like there’s something rotten online… always. And, with all of the good, even the trolls and comments can highlight the concept that ‘we can’t have nice things.’ So, where is this all heading? A correction and back to marveling at how all of this interconnectedness can bring us closer and make us smarter, or are we on a steep cliff staring off into the abyss? Weird can be good… weird can be bad… here’s an interesting take…” (Mitch for Alistair). The Digital Equivalent Of Wearing A Fake Chanel Bag – Garbage Day . “I believe I discovered this article via a LinkedIn post from Arjun Basu (a brilliant mind who understands publishing, content and is an author in his own right). I also like perespectives that aren’t married to my own beliefs. Maybe I am one of the few left online who actually likes reading pieces that I don’t fully agree with? Wouldn’t that be something! Anywho, this articles look at the value of AI art and what it’s actually good for (they’re not a fan). ‘The only real use case for AI art is flooding social media with a bunch of worthless garbage. And the only reason to do that is to advertise something or scam people.’ Ouch. I don’t fully agree… through good prompting and an strong eye for something aesthetic, I think generative AI art is interesting and often better than stock photography (now, that may not be saying much, but for many that’s where the bar is set). What’s your take?” (Mitch for Hugh).Feel free to share these links and add your picks on X, Facebook, in the comments below or wherever you play.

Six Links Worthy of Your Attention #707
Beep Beep – Daring Fireball. “One of the biggest debates in tech right now that’s still bubbling just under the surface is about Apple’s iMessage. To some, it’s an app, just like Signal or Whatsapp. To others, it’s Apple’s monopoly, making ‘green texts’ a second-class message platform. This happens because Apple has retrofitted SMS with a bunch of additional features only available to Apple users, and it’s actually hard to opt out. I’ve personally had people not receive messages until they were outside data plans, because that’s the only time they see SMS; and have had others with weird parallel messages linked to their email address that are separate from their phone number. SMS was invented in 1992, but iMessage only came along in 2011 – and many people don’t realize they’re two entirely different things, one piggybacking on another. So is Apple’s refusal not to let people use iMessage unless they’re Apple customers a monopolistic practice? Or is it simply a refusal to let people who aren’t paying use their service? It’s complicted, but this Daring Fireball piece explains it well.” (Alistair for Hugh). Why Is TikTok Parent ByteDance Moving Into Biology, Chemistry And Drug Discovery? – Forbes . “When you have access to what the world is thinking, you know what to make, who to sell it to, and how to sell it. This article speculates that data from TikTok ‘could serve as an invaluable feedback loop and marketing tool for drug developers.’ Or maybe it’s just finding other ways to use its AI infrastructure as companies like Google already do. But given that drug discovery is accelerating rapidly in the face of computation, changing fields like genomics and proposing thousands of new compounds, the real challenge is knowing which ones to pursue. Mitch, I figured you’d find this an interesting twist in your coverage of these companies.” (Alistair for Mitch). The Greatest Solo Of All Time – Rick Beato – YouTube . “I’ve posted before about music analyst/YouTuber, Rick Beato and Montreal’s legendary jazz pianist, Oscar Peterson. Here Rick analyzes a mind-blowing solo by Mr. Peterson.” (Hugh for Alistair). Leonard Nimoy Does A William Shatner Impression On Hero Complex – Nerdist – YouTube . “Came here for the impression, stayed to listen to a civilian version of Mr. Spock talk about a long career in acting, and some highlights on a life on the USS Enterprise.” (Hugh for Mitch). Timeline Of The Far Future – Information Is Beautiful . “This truly is an awesome visualization of information we should all know. From the post: ‘How long until the Sun turns into a black dwarf? How long before the Earth is destroyed? Don’t lose too much sleep over these. Why? Because photosynthesis will not be possible in 800 million years, ending all life. If we’re not annihilated by a colossal asteroid first. Explore this future timeline’. Morbid? Maybe. A great way to put your life and thinking into perspective? Absolutely!” (Mitch for Alistair). Podcasting Is In Its YouTube Era – The Verge . “File this under: More things Mitch is totally doing wrong with his digital channels. I love podcasting (more than most).
