Marianne Sciucco Spills the Beans

Hi, Marianne! So glad to have you at Spilling the Beans, where we can learn a little bit about you, and your book. Thanks for inviting me, Cate. I love chatting with other authors and meeting their readers.
Grab a cappuccino and let’s chat. Unless you have another favorite drink (alcoholic or otherwise)? A good cup of coffee works for me.
Make that two or three cups for me, lol Fur or feathers, pet-wise? I hate to brag, but I have to admit that I have the privilege of living with the best cat in the world. We took him in as a rescue when he was six weeks old and he is the master of our castle. His name is Chance, but we call him Mr. Chance when he's within hearing distance, although he'll often respond to Big Boy. He loves to watch me write, especially with his nose pressed against the screen and his tail on the keyboard. Yup, he's my muse.
Lucky girl! Any pet peeves? One thing that really burns your biscuits?Do I have to pick just one? In that case, I'll say people who are intolerant and hateful toward those who suffer with poverty, disability, illness, or other issues that prevent them from living independently. There but for the grace of God....
So true... Tell us something about yourself that’s not in your bio.In 2001, I had a near-drowning experience in the ocean.
Yikes! How scary. That could be a story in itself. What do you like to do when you’re not writing? One of my life's goals is to live long enough to read all the books in my to-be-read pile, so if I'm not writing I'm reading. Or watching television. I can't resist The Voice and I'm a sucker for American Idol. I love to sing, but I can barely carry a tune and have lousy pitch, so it's a way for me to live that life vicariously and not hurt anyone's ears.
If you had to choose another profession besides writer, what would it be and why?I did choose another profession: nurse! I started out as a newspaper reporter but couldn't get a regular gig so gave it up for a nursing career. Everything came full circle when one of the nurse managers at the hospital where I worked started a newsletter for the department and I volunteered to help. Next thing I knew I was running the whole thing! This reignited my desire to write, and I soon started my first novel.
Love it when The Universe redirects us to what we're meant to do. Are you a night owl or early bird? Both. Some nights I can't sleep so I crawl out of bed to the couch and read until I drop off. Some mornings I can't sleep and rise before dawn to start my day. Fortunately, I'm pretty good at taking naps.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be?I'd make sure no one was hungry.
Aw, I love that. How would your muse describe you?Frustrated. So much to do, so little time to do it.
If you could live out any fantasy, what would you do?I would possess untold wealth and give it away.
Sweet! If you could have dinner with anyone, past or present, fictional or real, who would it be and why?My dad. He died unexpectedly when I was 15, and we never said goodbye. Of course, then we would have to say goodbye for real, which would destroy me all over again, so maybe I'd play it safe and choose Josh Groban, or Bono, or Pope Francis.
What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done?I jumped on the stage at a U2 concert in 1983 at Brown University and danced with The Edge.
Beethoven, Beatles, Foo Fighters or Keith Urban (what type(s) of music makes you rock out)? Actually, I like all music, but as you may have surmised I have a particular love for U2, my Fab Four, whom I've followed since 1979. I love their passion and poetry. We kind of grew up together.
Does music influence your writing? Do you have a music playlist for your book?Oh yeah, I'm listening to the playlist for my novel-in-progress Swim Season as we do this interview. It helps me get into the story when I sit down to write. Sample artists: Seal, Katy Perry, Keane, Pharrell Williams, Van Halen, Josh Groban, and U2.
While creating your books, what was one of the most surprising things you learned? It's really easy, but it's so hard! The number of new skills I had to learn was overwhelming. There are many steps to take when making a book that most people have never thought of.
Great way of putting it :) Where can readers find out more about you? They can start with my website, Adventures in Publishing http://mariannesciucco.blogspot.comand Twitter is my next best home on the web -  @MarianneSciucco
Please tell us a bit about your book. My first novel is Blue Hydrangeas, an Alzheimer’s love story, about a pair of retired Cape Cod innkeepers struggling with the wife's Alzheimer's. The reviews and ratings have amazed me and I'm very proud of it. You can check it out on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Hydrangeas-Alzheimers-love-story-ebook/dp/B00CHU571S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1429904474&sr=8-1&keywords=sciucco
What inspired you to write it? One day while at work as a hospital nurse manager, a couple I met just captivated me and I couldn't stop thinking about them. I blended aspects of their situation with those of many others I'd met, added a dose of my own imagination, and the story took off.
Thanks for spilling the beans today! Thanks for picking them up!

Taryn Kincaid takes you Beyond Fairytales with Rain!

Rain A Beyond Fairytales story By Taryn Kincaid A dystopian retelling of Sleeping Beauty
Amazon | Kobo | Google | iTunes | ARe | Nook

Blurb             Sleeping Beauty in a post-apocalyptic land…
In a world gone mad, where little remains but a vast wasteland of sand, the leader of a troop of roving warriors welcomes a brave young woman into his midst.             Much as he burns for her, Major Clay Worthington swears to keep his distance from the mysterious woman, so sensitive even the stinging rain can wound her. Rosina Brierly is besotted with the formidable soldier and will gladly trade her life for one torrid night of blissful passion in his arms.
But when sleep overcomes them, will true love prevail?
Excerpt             Does the major ever feel lust? Does he covet a woman’s touch? He never gave any sign he did. Too aloof and austere, too remote from the simple emotions of mere mortal men.
He shook her again. “Wake up, princess. The rain will come soon.”
The men looked forward to the rain. They hated the relentless sun blasting down upon them, as if they thought it would incinerate what was left of the earth beneath their boots, baking the soft sand into badlands as hard as concrete. They’d strip off their T-shirts and boots, their combat fatigues, and sometimes even their camouflage boxer shorts, and dance and play, naked or nearly so, in the slanting gray soup, laughing, tossing round balls or throwing saucer-shaped plastic discs to each other.
For her, the showers had the opposite effect. The stinging rain sliced into her sensitive skin like acid, raising blisters and sores, sometimes bloodying her.
She did not know why the major called her princess. Perhaps he didn’t know either. Whatever royalty once walked the earth had long gone, fled underground or died in battle or simply disappeared. The war engulfed every human on the planet, every inch of land, and had waged so long she doubted anyone remembered anymore. Well, maybe Nicodemus. At least he sometimes hinted he did in the stories he told. And she had seen him whisper into the major’s ear, unknown things that made the major pale beneath his weathered tan.
Major Worthington did not treat her like a princess, though, except when she slumbered, when he knelt before her in her fantasy world, his head bowed, his fist over his heart, laying his sword at her feet and claiming the role of knight. Her hero. Her champion. When she awoke, he remained one of the elite warrior breed roaming the planet, bristling with weapons like the soldiers he led. He treated her as the translator she was to him, sometimes barking orders to her as if she were one of his men, only occasionally seeking her counsel.
She came fully awake as he jerked her up from the ground and yanked her toward him. The glare of the setting sun broadsided her, hurting her eyes. Why was he so insistent about the impending rain? No clouds yet darkened the sky, although the hour sped toward evening dusk now. But no hint of shadow yet blotted the horizon.
“I can smell it,” he muttered.

Myth and Magic by Mae Clair

Congrats to Mae on the release of Myth and Magic! This sounds like a fantastic story, don't you think?
Myth and Magic By Mae Clair
GENRE:  Romantic Suspense/Mystery PUBLISHER:  Kensington Books/Lyrica Press Imprint

Love and danger intertwine
AS CHILDREN THEY PLAYED GAMES OF MYTH AND MAGIC…

Veronica Kent fell in love with Caith Breckwood when they were children. As a teenager, she was certain he was the man she was destined to marry. But a traumatic event from Caith's past led him to fear a future together. He left Veronica, hoping to save her from a terrible fate. Twelve years later, Caith, now a P.I., is hired to investigate bizarre incidents at the secluded retreat Veronica manages. Returning to his hometown, Caith is forced to face his nightmares—and his feelings for the woman he’s always loved.

THEN ONE DAY THE MONSTERS BECAME REAL.

After the callous way Caith broke her heart, Veronica isn’t thrilled to see him again. But strange occurrences have taken a dangerous toll on business at Stone Willow Lodge. Forced to work together, Veronica discovers it isn’t ghostly apparitions that frighten her, but her passion for a man she has never forgotten. Or forgiven. Can two people with a tarnished past unearth a magical future?
EXCERPT Veronica’s stomach clenched as a mixture of fear and dread skittered through her. The expression in her eyes must have betrayed her unease because Morgana took her by the arm and drew her aside. Across the hall, the caterer and florist were busily consulting with the head of Morgana’s household staff. Three workers wearing black shirts that proclaimed Ghosts & Ghouls, Inc. wheeled a life-sized coffin through the front door. Having attended a number of Morgana’s Halloween parties, Veronica knew trays would be fitted inside the open lid, bearing all manner of delectable treats.
“I know my son,” Morgana said, cutting through the noise and activity. “He’s stubborn, but he’s not stupid. He isn’t going anywhere, Veronica. He may not be willing to admit it, but he’s in love with you.”
“No.” She tried to draw away. “Don’t say that.”
“It’s the truth.”
She shook her head. “Caith’s terrified of love.”
“He’s terrified of loss.”
Veronica clamped her mouth shut. Morgana was right. Even if Caith wouldn’t admit it, she knew it was the defining emotion that had driven him all of his life. The reason he’d chosen a career designed to keep others safe, the reason he’d given his son another name, the reason he still couldn’t bring himself to visit Trask’s grave.
She wet her lips. “I have to see him.”
“Give him time first,” Morgana suggested. “Stuart said he was up all night working on the case. He’s barely slept and probably isn’t thinking clearly.” She smiled encouragingly, hooking her arm through Veronica’s. “You can stay and help me decide where the band should go. And the goblins. Did I mention we’re having roving goblins?”
Veronica managed a small smile. The Ghosts & Ghouls people were pushing a series of crates through the door. Tall ones, large ones, squat ones.
“Mrs. Breckwood,” a sandy-haired worker called. “Where would you like us to put the trolls?”

The summer of yes

I was out and about, and a window ad with this little saying hit me. What a great idea! I can't remember the store (so please don't sue me), but the ad inspired me. I'm going to make this a summer of yes.

I can't work on my stories as much as I'd like, but I *will* work on them.

I'm actually not falling too far behind. Next month, the rights to Death Is A Bitch will return to me, and I've been gearing up for that. I've made this new cover, which I'm pretty happy with.

And I've taken the story from 33k to 48k - 15,000 words of greater detail and depth and "feels." I'm really happy with it! I can't wait to re-release it, though I'll have to wait a few months.

In the meantime, I've started work on my first steampunk. I hesitated before because I hadn't read any stories, only seen amazing movies like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen or Wild, Wild West or Sherlock Holmes or Around the World in 80 Days (if you've never seen it, it's a very fun movie, and Jackie Chan is always amazing to watch. YouTube has the entire movie online:

But I've been reading up on steampunk, and have a better sense of the worldbuilding that's needed. The actual story's about 2k as of yesterday, but the background work is pretty well fleshed out, and that's every bit as important.

So, I'm making the most of the time with my grandboys, and making the most of whatever writing time I can squeeze in.

How's your summer so far?

Heat in the Arctic?

If the summer heat's too much for you, you need an Arctic blast! Luckily for you, I have the solution. :) This morning, I checked Amazon and found that Twice In A Blue Moon is only 99 cents!

And it's only 99 cents on Barnes and Noble too.

Likewise, on Kensington's site.

I try *not* to look too much at reviews, because sometimes they're head-scratchers, but this one caught my eye. CelticMaggie said: "This book really touched me. I wasn't sure where this story was going but it was a grand trip."

Which is perfect, because that's what I aim for - realistic, relatable characters and a bit of an adventure. :)

Excerpt Crossing her arms over her stomach, Gwen leaned forward, pressing deep. Good heavens, she was nervous, and excited, and nervous. She was going to meet Edward. One moment soon, he was going to open that door and she would see him. She would see the man she’d corresponded with for over a year, to whom she’d expressed every thought, and who had expressed his to her. It did not matter that he was a duke, so far above her in consequence as to be laughable. He was her friend, and at last they would meet.
Foot tapping wildly, she leaned her head back against the wall. This was all so ridiculous. She was ridiculous, to have this unbridled excitement rioting through her. Exhaling, she caught the stare of the gargoyle. The gargoyle knew how ridiculous her thoughts. Its stone features laughed at her, and in a fit of pique, she poked her tongue out.
The study door opened. Leaping to her feet, she swayed as the blood rushed from her head.
Lord Beecham appeared in the door way and, eyes lighting upon her, he crooked a finger. “Miss Parkes. Come.”
Heart beating a rapid tattoo, she bent to grip the handle of her carpet bag. Lord Beecham had abandoned the door by the time she had gathered herself enough to approach, the worn wooden handle of the bag pressing deep into her palm.
Passing through the door, Gwen stopped and, jaw slack, she looked about the chamber. The room was huge, cavernous even, and dark. So dark. Lit only by the flame of the massive fireplace dominating one wall and the wan flicker of a lamp seated on the enormous desk, the light picked up rows upon rows of books while heavy drapes of an unidentifiable fabric covered what she could only presume were windows. The floor was the same stone as the hall, the only carpet appearing before the fire under the clawed feet of a large armchair.
Her gaze returned to the fireplace. A man stood before it, his back to her, right hand held by his left.
Her heart, already racing, started a wild thud against her ribs. That was him. The duke. Edward.
He did not turn, though she willed him to. Willed him to turn, so she could utter that most important of phrases, the one she’d longed to say for an age now.

The Griffin's Secret has released!

Woot! I could happy dance all day. *grin*

The Griffin's Secret is such a fun story. It came about in part due to last year's slight obsession with Jimi Hendrix.

Some of his songs, like the one below, hint at powers beyond simple talent. It's always fun to wonder "what if" - and in my story, the heroine is Jimi Hendrix's grandchild.

I love this story so much. I hope you will too!

You can read the blurb, excerpt and view the book video for The Griffin's Secret in the post below.

And now, some rock and roll magic...

ReviewsI loved the magical aspect of this book. It was entertaining. Two cursed souls, destined to be with each other and just like in those fairy-tales. In the end good overcomes evil and love truly does conquer all. Overall the characters were good, the story flowed. It was an easy read.KK’s Reviews – 4 Stars https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1240796459?book_show_action=true&page=1

Excerpt
The faint scent of an exotic flower on an ocean breeze hit him the second the girl walked in. Every part of his body stood at attention, taking in the way she moved. The curve of her slender hips. Those long legs…they’d wrap around the back seat of his Harley perfectly. Wrap around him perfectly, too.A flip of her onyx-silk hair sent it behind her shoulder as she sat opposite. “Who are you?”Good question. He’d been seeking the same answer for too long. “Jackson Grant.”Her eyes darkened, deep brown to charcoal diamonds. “Why are you here?”“For the roadie job.” Was she the first gatekeeper? A gate she kept locked, he’d bet. Or maybe she was another test. Kev had warned him there’d be tricky questions and to answer straight. Something told him she asked out of curiosity.“You think you’re up for such a demanding job?”Again, the impression hit him she was making these questions up as she went along, ad-libbing off his replies. He’d play. “I’m strong. Dependable. I follow orders, keep my head down, and stay out of trouble.” And he liked his privacy. Her features smoothed, hard as porcelain. “Do you.” Not a question. He’d answer anyway. “Yes.”Did disappointment curl her lip? Or boredom? Why did he care? If he could, he’d blast out of there before his own curiosity got the better of him. Already, she’d gotten under his skin. Crazy how the tat no longer singed him, but now twisted like a trapped animal. With a plastic smile, she batted her eyes, and the false flirtation didn’t suit her. “So. You’re a yes-man.”The way she said it, he’d be no different than any other roadie serving the great rock star, Malcolm Fetterman. Fine by Jackson. The less he stood out, the better. Except for her. He hated to think of her glossing over his presence, but that would be better, too.He drummed his fingers on the table. “I need the job.” Where the hell was Malcolm anyway? The longer he stayed with her, the more he wanted to. Definitely couldn’t afford that kind of trouble. He glanced at the open door, hoping he wouldn’t have to go through the same interrogation again.
She tapped the table. “You’d have to travel constantly.”“Perfect.” No different than his usual way of life. Except this time, his paycheck would remain steady.“You wouldn’t miss your family?” She dipped her head. “Your girlfriend?”He curled his lip this time. No one’s business but his. He shifted in his seat. “They’re better off.”Her brows knit, and then her expression became unreadable as the Sphinx. “The hours are long, and the equipment’s heavy. Everything has to be exactly as Mal orders.”Did he imagine it, or had she winced at her own words? He shrugged. “It’s his show.” Someday, Jackson would have his own roadies. And would treat them much better than Malcolm Fetterman did, if the stories proved true. Her steely focus cut into him. “Mal doesn’t hire musicians except for those in the band. And there aren’t any openings in Malcontent.”He didn’t allow himself to blink. “No problem.”“But you play, don’t you?” Her gaze dropped to his callused fingertips drumming the tabletop. He drew his hand down. “No.” A necessary lie. She might suspect, but couldn’t possibly know the truth. Almost like leaving one of his limbs behind, he’d locked his Fender in storage in New Jersey with his paltry possessions for six months. By then, he’d know whether this gig worked out.

Happy release day to Erin Fanning!

Blood Stitches By Erin Fanning Available May 12, 2015 from Kensington Publishing/Lyrical Press
Love and danger intertwine…
It’s called El Toque de la Luna—The Touch of the Moon. At least that’s how nineteen-year-old Gabby’s older sister, Esperanza, refers to the magical powers she inherited from their Mayan ancestors. Esperanza says women with El Toque weave magic into their knitting, creating tapestries capable of saving—or devastating—the world. Gabby thinks Esperanza is more like touched in the head—until a man dressed like a candy corn arrives at their Seattle home on Halloween. But “Mr. C” is far from sweet…
Soon, Gabby and her almost-more-than-friend, Frank, find themselves spirited away to a demon ball, complete with shape shifters—and on a mission to destroy Esperanza’s tapestries before they cause an apocalyptic disaster… And before it’s too late to confess their true feelings for each other.
