This not-so sudden move was prompted after the Justice Department got pissy at WhatsApp. The New York Times reported over the weekend that the encryption built into WhatsApp (owned by Facebook) prevents law enforcement from reading or intercepting any messages sent via the platform.
This is a clear issue for the Justice Department and in theory the solution would be act like a tattle tail and request a legal court order.
