Hark, A Vagrant: Fenian Raid

buy this print!
In Canada, we learn that the Fenain raids of the 1870s provided us with a high horse we like to use even today! Why is America always picking on us? Those guys are jerks, stop invading us with bad plans to trade us for Ireland. Maybe we don't like to be treated that way, you ever think of that? How RUDE.
And for anyone wondering, the gent with the Van Dyke beard would be General John O'Neill, veteran of the American civil war, like many of the volunteers. I learned that in the UK, "fenian" is a much more complex term than it is here, where it is pretty straightforwardly about this time in history, and what they called themselves.

Hark, A Vagrant: Femme Fatale

buy this print!
Watch out! Dames like this are dangerous. But you know, they have other things going on in their lives than walking through a detective's door through a dangerous cloud of fog. Probably.
I've watched some noir films while drawing this comic, and where has that dialogue been all my life? Also, if you read essays on how femme fatales threw out conventions of the day you realize they are all basically the best characters ever. Too bad for any lousy rat they cross paths with though.
The store is going to update as soon as the new merchandise comes in. STAY TUNED

Hark, A Vagrant: Broadside Ballads 1

buy this print!
Broadside Ballads were made for entertainment, and I've had great fun going through the Bodleian library for them.
In order, here is where you can find the originals:
The School of Venus
The Rambling Boy
The Mourning Conquest
The Rambling Boys of Pleasure
Unconstant Phillis
Toby Philpot
Broadside illustrations were often used over again for different songs, so it's not unusual to see them pop up in new places, though perhaps comic riffs is a new one. The drawings are funny to our modern eyes, but give a little browse through the Bodleian, or the University of California's collection, and you're sure to find something funny and smart and very interesting and 200 years old. And clearly, boobs and dicks and things were always a crowd pleaser, happy am I to carry this torch.
We have new things coming in the store very soon, so keep your eyes peeled! Or also, check my tumblr now and then! There are also drawings and other things on there.
I know not everyone is a merchandise sort of person, so I added a donate button below for the people who have told me here and there over the years that they'd like to support Hark A Vagrant in another way. Which is really kind! I thought about Patreon, and maybe that will come about sometime, but with my sporadic update schedule, I am never sure.

Hark, A Vagrant: Lady of Shalott

buy this print!
I don't care how hot some random dude is, getting a peep at him probably not the best reason to invoke a vague curse that takes your life, LADY OF SHALOTT. Even if you did that thing where you lower your sunglasses at them as they go by, and say "dayuum!" And even if he's Lancelot. I can't imagine it being worth it, anyway. But I can imagine a circumstance that would definitely ruin the moment.
OK, I can joke about The Lady of Shalott, but I can't fib, I get emotional listening to Loreena McKennitt singing it, like the best of us.
More Kokoro at a later time! I did not forget that I said the same thing about Wuthering Heights.
Soon it is time for my annual merchandise rollout! If there is anything you would particularly want, drop me a line. I just want to make things people like, when it comes to that stuff.

Hark, A Vagrant: Spooky Postcards

buy this print!
Spooky, right? I wonder where that tradition stopped, where you look in the mirror and see your future husband's face on Halloween. Judging by the card collections, it was pretty popular!
Just a couple of sketches for the season.
I was busy a while back designing shirts! They should be up in the store soon. Keep track of things on my tumblr, where I post sketches and updates and things I find interesting!

Hark, A Vagrant: Edward the Black Prince

buy this print!
A couple of comics about Edward, the Black Prince. I love that a man who was brutal in many ways was celebrated as "the Flower of English Chivalry" even into the 1900s. That's from a towering statue in Leeds, where I am headed for this year's Thought Bubble Festival! Love Leeds, love Thought Bubble, love the Black Prince, love his statue. I admit that last year I was proud of myself for identifying the figure from afar - it's all that bullet shaped armour around his head (amiright), a style we all wish would come back.
Also, glory be! New shirts! I am so glad to be stocking the store with new things. The Venus one is not in yet, but coming, but head on over to check out the rest. Deck yourselves in them, deck your friends, deck whoever! Just click the link:
