Although she was born in Ireland and lived and worked in many parts of the world, it was her close association with New Guinea for which Beatrice Grimshaw (1871-1953) is best remembered.

She was the first European woman to ascend the Fly and Sepik Rivers and many of her books are set in New Guinea or the Pacific.
