Aurealis Awards Shortlists
It’s always a delight to find my work on shortlists! This year, The Briar Book of the Dead is a finalist for Best Fantasy Novel and my story “Bell, Book and Lamp” from the Bound in Blood anthology (edited by Johnny Mains, published by Titan) is a finalist for the Best Horror Novella. Both are in excellent company!
A huge thanks to the judges and the organisers who put in so much work as volunteers to keep these awards running.

New postcard
As ever, beautiful art by Kathleen Jennings!
This is the last of the postcard series of my gothic heroines: Violet Zennor from The Crimson Road.
She joins Miren O’Malley (All the Murmuring Bones), Asher Todd (The Path of Thorns), and Ellie Briar (The Briar Book of the Dead). We’ll have some packs of them at the launch next week (as long as the print and courier gods are kind).
News: Film Options
I’m so delighted to announce that the wonderful Veronica Wain has optioned The Path of Thorns for film and the Verity Fassbinder series with an eye to a TV series adaptation. It’s early days yet, but I’m so excited by the possibilities! Stay tuned!

AACTA: Scream Queens Panel
Scream Queens Behind the Scenes: Women in Horror
On Saturday 8 February 202 at 3:30 pm I’ll be part of a panel at the AACTA Festival on the Gold Coast, with the legendary Natalie Erika James (Relic), Katrina Irawati Graham (Dark Whispers) and Briony Kidd (Stranger With My Face).
Step into the dark heart of Australian horror, where women are fearlessly rewriting the rules. This electrifying panel celebrates the powerful voices of writers, directors, and producers leading the charge in horror’s evolution.
Featuring Natalie Erika James (Relic), Horror author Angela Slatter and Katrina Irawati Graham (Dark Whispers) discover how they craft spine-chilling tales and unforgettable characters that shatter stereotypes. From Relic’s eerie family dynamics to innovative new horror narratives, explore the daring vision behind some of the most groundbreaking works in modern horror. Witness how these women are transforming fear itself into a thrilling new frontier.
Hosted by Briony Kidd.
Also my gothic fantasy novels will be at the festival bookshop, including (ahem) a very few early release copies of The Crimson Road… And I’ll be doing a signing immediately after the panel.

Angela Slatter’s The Night Stair is a gothic fantasy tale of vampires, vengeance, and treachery set in the award-winning author’s Sourdough universe.
Two of Adlisa’s sisters have been selected to serve, adopting the role of dutiful daughter to the dark Lady who rules the manor. Two of Adlisa’s sisters were eaten, devoured when the Lady’s fixations soured and they were deemed expendable.
Now it’s Adlisa’s turn to serve, selected from seven candidates to step into the opulent luxury of her new life. Her survival depends on maintaining a fragile illusion, standing in for the child Her Ladyship lost centuries before.
Yet Adlisa is no helpless daughter, here to serve and earn coin for her family until her untimely death. She plays her own games with the Lord and Lady of the house, and she is not as helpless as she seems.
This 48 page chapbook presents a stand-alone story set in the world of A.G. Slatter’s The Crimson Road, alongside an author’s note and an updated chronology of the Sourdough universe.
Good News x 2
A double bit of good news yesterday, when I heard that The Briar Book of the Dead had not only made it to the long-list of the BSFA awards for Best Novel (along with the likes of Kelly Link, Jeff VanderMeer T. Kingfisher and Alan Moore) but ALSO had been put on the Locus Recommended Reading List for fantasy novels published in 2024. Thanks so much to all the readers who found something to love in my weird little cosy with witches!
