REQUIEM FOR BAILEY

No hmmm today. My subject for this posting is one of those rare, pure and unequivocal gifts that grace our lives for a season and then pass on.

His name was Bailey and he was a little piece of heaven on earth. A sweet, loyal, loving and courageous little dog that won the heart of everyone who knew him. His days drew to a close this week. I believe the world shuddered and sighed when he took his last breath.

Bailey spent the first 3-1/2 years of his life with masters unknown to me. The next few ...

Tiger Woods: Deep in the Rough

Hmmm, it seems Tiger Woods ran up a triple bogey on his marriage fidelity scorecard. For those of you who are not golf fans, that's 3 over par on a single hole – something that never happens to Tiger on the course.

Quick poll. I'd like to know where you sit on the 'Why did you do it, Tiger?' question.

I feel sorry for him.
What the hell was he thinking?
He made his bed and now he has to sleep in it – or out of it as the case may be.
Don't really give a damn either way.

I've been trying to...

HIJACKED!!

Michael's blog has been hijacked for this one posting by his alter ego who insists he really must do more to make people aware of his unique internet-enhanced novel which is, after all, receiving quite glowing reviews.

Michael is tied up and gagged in the storage room of his apartment. He will be released when this posting has gone public. Michael's Metaphors of Life Journal will return to its usual format after this posting.

A Wandering Phainopepla and Bilbo Baggins

Hmmm, could it be that the magic formula for happiness and self-fulfillment is as simple as learning to be in harmony with our little corner of the world? It suddenly seems that way to me.

For the last couple of weeks a bird called a Phainopepla has been hanging around a neighbourhood here in Brampton. Don't be surprised if you haven't heard the name. This intrepid, winged traveler is about 2,100 miles from where he ought to be. His normal range is Mexico and the southwestern edge of the U.S.

T...

THURSDAY RANT

Hmmm, should I be pulpit-pounding mad that the TV networks want me to pay a tax to feather their already well-lined pockets?

The cable companies – who have some pretty deep pockets themselves – seem to think so. They've dropped a bundle on their "man on the street" TV commercials in an attempt to light a fire under us and make us all righteously indignant at this outrageous money grab.

Well sorry, but I'm particularly worried about that issue. In fact, it's not anywhere on my radar screen at...

HACKED

Hmmm, I wonder what it is that motivates the high tech vandals who hack into websites and unleash nasty viruses to scurry through our e-mail chatter wreaking havoc.

One of my sites was hacked recently. It was a minor attack as hacking goes but it did require a reload of the software to remedy the situation. I suppose I should be flattered that he/she thought my site was worthy of their time and effort. Or maybe they found out that my sites are actually a front for the Canadian Intelligence...

RANDOM ACT OF METAPHOR: Tunnel Vision

Hmmm, it seems to me that our brains are on perpetual information overload in this helter-skelter world we live in. Which makes me wonder: How much does what we don't see – because we're too preoccupied to notice – influence the course of our lives?

I was on a leisurely walk by the Humber River today. It was unusually warm for November. Many winter hermits like me were out enjoying the last exhale of autumn.

I heard a rustling in the trees. Perhaps a bird, I thought. A few feet further down...

THE RACE TO NOWHERE

Hmmm, is the world moving ever faster and we have to speed up to survive? Or is it just easier to hit the accelerator than to stop and examine why we're not happy where we are?

"Pain reaches the heart with electrical speed, but truth moves to the heart as slowly as a glacier."  ~ Barbara Kingsolver, U.S. Writer

What got me thinking along these lines was driving to work and watching two kamikaze lane hoppers make their way south on Dixie Road. You know the type I mean. They weave through...

RANDOM ACT OF METAPHOR: Vapour Trails

Hmmm, where does that vapour trail begin and end as it streaks across the clear, blue sky? Better question: How long will it linger after the jet that left its signature has passed out of our event horizon?

The first question is, of course, rhetorical. The second has deeper implications. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, these streamers of clouds – also known as 'condensation clouds' or 'contrails' – can last up to several hours. Elsewhere on the web I read that they can interfere with...

LOOKING INTO THE ECLIPSE

Hmmm, I wonder what would happen if we shifted our perspective sideways for a moment and focused on the intervals between the ticks of the clock. The pauses between the words. The silence between the footsteps.

Would we awaken to a richer perspective? Perhaps there would be shimmering fireflies of deeper consciousness flickering all around us. A bit like the dust particles that spin and tumble before our eyes unnoticed until light hits them at just the right frequency.

What has stirred this...
