One thing you need to know about LJ Clarkson is that she tells BIG lies. She tells everyone that she gave up her career as an Environmental Engineer and Project Manager to write full time. But that's not entirely true. Ten percent of the time she sleeps in. Fifteen percent of her day, she spends surfing the internet, researching for new books and her business. Ok, fine. “Did you know Isabelle has a silver, alien antenna?” Bimouth’s voice sang out over the shouts and chatter of the school bus, capturing everyone’s attention. “In science class, a magnet flew out of Mr. Higgins’ hand and stuck to her antenna. How freaky is that?”



 Isabelle’s back pressed against her seat.



 Bianca leapt up like a jack-in-a-box. Her voice came out as a hiss. “Shut your face horse mite or I’ll shut it for you.”



Looked like the bus ride might end in death.



Bigmouth turned to face Bianca. “What if Isabelle’s antenna, like, turns us into alien zombies?”



A chorus of whispers broke out.

Catching the bus was a very bad idea. Isabelle prayed again for that black hole to open up and suck her in. Better yet, she wished it would gobble up the bigmouth. Isabelle tugged on Bianca’s arm and said in a low voice, “Just cut it off.”



Her friend’s eyes softened. “You sure, Boof?”



“The hair’s caused nothing but trouble since it sprouted.” The little voice inside Isabelle’s mind begged her not to, but she didn’t listen.

“Ok.”



Something in Bianca’s school bag rattled as she riffled through it. She yanked a pair of scissors free. 




Isabelle’s gut clenched as her friend laid the strand between the blades. “Wait!” She suddenly felt unsure about whether to get rid of it. What if it were special and magical like Bianca had said? A magnetic hair, although cool, was hardly magical. Isabelle decided to test it. Closing her eyes, she willed her strand to turn Bigmouth into a toad.



 But Bigmouth’s voice still carried throughout the bus. “And in gym class, like, she bled this weird, pink dust.”



“Definitely an alien,” someone nearby agreed.



So much for Isabelle’s strand being magical. “Cut it,” she said, exchanging a sideways look with Bianca.

Her friend squeezed the handles together.



Fuchsia-colored sparks shot out and scalded Isabelle’s right cheek. The strand sizzled and hissed like a firecracker, drawing the attention of Bigmouth.

She shrieked like a real girl. “Look! Isabelle’s antenna’s on fire.”

Interview with Jennifer M. Eaton, Author of PAPER WISHES

Today, we have an interview with the lovely Jennifer Eaton. We've been on a library panel before, and let me tell you, Jennifer knows her stuff!









Hello Nicole! Thanks so much for having me!



Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?




I’ve read a few books by Jocelyn
Adams that have blown me away.  She has a
crisp, fresh style that is really easy to read. 
I hope that I can soak up a little of her talent by reading her books.





Linda
Caroll Bradd is also someone I have my eye on. 
She writes Romance at the moment, but I’m hoping she will branch
out.  She has a knack for making the
reader really care about her characters.


Great choices! What are your current projects?




I recently finished a Young Adult Urban Fantasy called FIRE IN THE
WOODS.  It is an exciting high-paced
chase novel that takes place in the woods of New Jersey.  I’m currently looking for a home for it.




I am
also working on a New Adult Dystopian called OPTIMAL RED which is a prequel to
my story LAST WINTER RED from the “Make Believe” anthology.  OPTIMAL RED also has a taste of a “chase”
theme. I’m really enjoying getting deeper into the world that I created in the
first book.


They sound great! What was the hardest part of writing your book?




Finding the time to do it.  I have a full time job, and I am also a full
time wife and mom.  Finding that one hour
or so a day is tough sometimes, but I make it a priority.  I just have to cut out other things, like television.



So true! Making time for writing is hard every day, but it's necessary. How long does it take you to write a book?




That depends on what you consider “writing a book.”  I can get a first draft done in a little over
two months.  Now, that is not to say that
I would let anyone READ that first draft. 
At this point I have about two months of editing where I will insert setting and
emotional response (which I usually miss the first time around.)  Then I send this draft out to 2-3 Beta
readers.  They come back with their
comments in about two weeks.  I then
revise off their comments and send it out again to another 2-5 beta
readers.  The total time ends up being
about seven months of actual work on that title, and I take breaks to write
shorts in between drafts, so in calendar time it’s about a year total. I could
speed myself up if I wrote on weekends, but that’s my family time.


My rough drafts are very ROUGH. How did you come up with the title PAPER WISHES?




PAPER WISHES is about a family that writes their wishes on a piece of
paper, and then folds them into origami stars. 
After a few weeks, they open them and see if their wishes come true.
PAPER WISHES seemed appropriate, not only for the obvious reason, but also
because wishes, in general, are blank like a piece of paper.  It is the journey of making that wish come
true that really makes the difference in one’s life.



Is there a message in PAPER WISHES you want readers to grasp?




There are a lot of messages in
this book.  Far more than I ever really
intended when I started writing. I’m always surprised when I get feedback on
this story what people get out of it.  My
original intent was the message that wishes always come true, just not always
as you may have planned.  But there are
also gentle themes of morality, family, regret, friendship, love, and so many
other simple messages that people can really relate to.  All in all, I’m pretty proud of PAPER WISHES
from that respect.

Ch-ch-changes YA Hop with Nicole Zoltack

Welcome to the Ch-ch-changes blog hop!





WOMAN OF HONOR, the
first book in my Kingdom
of Arnhem trilogy, deals
with a lot of changes in the main character's life. Aislinn grows up from a
young girl at seven, with a big dream of becoming a lady knight, to becoming a
squire and falling in love, to even more. To say she goes through changes is an
understatement!

"Is there anyone else that you have feelings for, Aislinn?
Is that why you don't want to be with Geoffrey?"




Aislinn
blinked, thinking about his question. "I haven't thought about such
things. I'm too focused on becoming a knight. That's all I'm worried about."



Caelan pushed
back his chair and stood. With him on his feet, Aislinn had to tip back her
chin to look him in the face, he had grown so much in the years since they'd first met.
"There is no one else?"



She shook her
head.



Caelan took a
step closer to her, stepping so close he only had to whisper for her to hear
him. "What if I told you that Geoffrey isn't the only one who favors your

His closeness
overwhelmed Aislinn and she tried to take a step back. Her shoulders bumped the
bookshelf behind her and several books shifted, but none made enough noise to

chin, and with a gentle touched, forced her to look at him.



Her heart pounded
hard in her chest like a caged bird and Aislinn caught her breath.



"Caelan,"
she whispered softly, but before she could say more, his lips covered hers.



Aislinn froze for
a second as he held his mouth against hers, then heard herself sigh when he
pressed closer and moved his lips. Aislinn's eyes fluttered closed and she
raised her hands to lay them on his chest, feeling his heart pound as hard as
her own. Then reality snapped at her and she shoved him away.



"Stop it!"



She pushed past
the prince and rushed from the library, with several squires and younger pages
turning at her escape. Aislinn ran to her room and slammed the door shut. She
leaned against it and slid to the floor, her head in her hands.

But the worst
realization was that she'd kissed him back. Even the memory now made her
insides tremble and her hands shake.

I live in Essex,
not too far from London, with my very understanding husband, our identical twin
boys, and two Bedlington Terriers. We're crammed into our rather cozy two-up
two-down terrace and we can barely swing a cat, but hey, we love it. I work
part-time as a nurse, but when I'm off duty, you will find me either chasing
the toddlers around like a headless chicken, head buried in a book, or tapping
away at my stories.




I have always loved
to read and romance is by far my favourite genre! You can easily escape into
such promising worlds, where sexy Alpha males lead the way and strong heroine's
often can't help but fall head over heels in love. I adore a Happy Ever After -
as I'm sure we all do if we're honest, right?!



Reading and writing go hand in hand and from the day I could read, I enjoyed
writing. To put pen to paper and conjure up weird and wonderful little stories
was what I thrived on! English was my favourite class at school right
throughout to secondary - and I will always be thankful for the teachers who
gave me the opportunities to develop and be creative! If I remember rightly,
one of my first stories was called 'The Turkey Who Could Talk'...but I'll tell
you more about that some other day :-)

Tell us your latest news, Cassie.




Hmm… I think everybody knows my news, haha! But the last
email I got just said my edits for SWITCHED (coming December 2013) are done!
Wahoo!



When did you first consider yourself a writer?




2011, when I finished my first book.


And we're all so grateful you took up writing. :) What inspired you to write Friday Night Alibi?




I fell asleep in the shower and woke up to freezing cold
water. Instead of jumping out like a normal person, I stayed in and acted out a
scene, then got out and wrote it, lol.


Haha, love it! Do you have a specific writing style?




Yes. I write as if the character is talking to the reader.
Like in Saved by the Bell
when Zach pauses the scene and talks to the camera, lol.


That's awesome. How did you come up with the title?




Friday Night Alibi was who the character was. I had that
title when the idea for the book plopped in my head.



Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?




That love is fun, it’s immature sometimes, and when you open
yourself up to it, it can be freaking awesome.



What books have most influenced your life most?




Harry Potter, Twilight, Lord of the Rings, Fablehaven,
anything by Jolene Perry, Match Made in High School… I really could go on and
on, lol.


Great choices. Speaking of choices, iIf you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?




Jolene Perry. She rocks, and she hasn’t told me to stop
fangirling and to leave her alone yet.



What book are you reading now?

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?




LM Augustine, lol. Leigh T. Moore, Theresa Paolo (but I’m
biased because she’s my critique partner.)



What are your current projects?




I’m working on two books right now, one NA and one YA. The
YA is book 3 in my HOW TO Series through Swoon Romance, and the NA I’m hoping to
knock Random Houses socks off with, haha! Do you want titles? How to Snag a
Sugar Daddy and The Real Thing. We’ll see if they stick ;)



Can you share a little of your current work with us?




Sure… lemme pull something out here…




“Make love to me.”

If requests could
cause heart attacks, I’m pretty sure mine just did. Eric blinks and grips the
side of the grocery cart, putting most of his weight on it. Goodness, I hope he
doesn’t pass out.

“Eric?”

He clears his throat,
eyes never leaving mine. “Right here? I mean, I’m all for making statements and
such, but I don’t think I want my first time in the diaper aisle at Target.”



Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?




Everything. Sometimes it’s the dialogue, sometimes it’s the
plot, sometimes it’s my characters. All depends on the book and the story. But
I like challenging, because it makes me better.



Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their
work?




I can’t pick a favorite! LOL. I do love Miranda Kenneally
though, because she’s not afraid to write different from the trends. She writes
true to her characters no matter what.


It is so hard to pick a favorite. What was the hardest part of writing your book?




FRIDAY NIGHT ALIBI was hard because I was pregnant, my mind
was gone, and I was face in a toilet for half of it, lol. But it turned out to
be one of my most favorite ones I’ve written.



Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?




I LOVE YOU! *huggles*


:D How long does it take you to write a book?




It used to only take me a couple weeks. Now it takes me a
couple months. I think it’s ‘cause I can’t shut off my editor brain now. Kind
of like driving. There are so many things to think about and concentrate on, it
takes a little bit longer. But it also saves me time in the editing room.



What is your work schedule like when you're writing?




I write whenever I can. Right now I’m in my pajamas while my
kids scream at each other over who gets the last cookie. Being a stay-at-home
mom, they make my schedule, not me :)



What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?




I probably have an awkward boner scene in almost every book.
Must be my signature, haha!




What paranormal creature would you be and why?




A vampire, because I am pasty white.


I'm so white too! Although, in recent years, I have been getting a little color. What would you do if you didn’t have to work?




Play video games, write, eat licorice, and chug mountain
dew.




Wait… I already do those things :)


Hahaha. What did you want to be when you were 10 years old?




A teacher. Yeah, two years of tutoring made me change my
mind.


I could never be a teacher. What makes you laugh?




I have a 12 year old boy sense of humor. So any words or
actions that would cause them to laugh, it’s safe to say I’d laugh as well.




Hey, laughing is healthy, right? If aliens landed in front of you

First, let me introduce myself. My
name is Sandra Sookoo. I write romantic fiction, but over the course of the
last year, I’ve primarily focused on contemporary and Regency romance. My
latest book is a sweet contemporary.




I don’t know about you but I’m a
sucker for old Hollywood movies. I’d say anything from the 1950s is my absolute
favorite. When I set out to write this book, I had no idea I would include
Hollywood trivia from that time period. One day, I had an urge to watch The African Queen, so I called it up on
Netflix and became absorbed in the film. I’d seen it before, of course, and it
always stuck with me (especially since bits of Disney’s Jungle Cruise ride are
inspired by it) Anyway, I’m sure it comes as no surprise Gwynn and Cole watch
this movie as part of the Movies in the Park in this book. It worked out
surprisingly well and I’m very pleased with how it played out. I hope you will
be too. (But you have to buy the book to find out what I’m talking about!)

napkin, she licked the sugary glob from her finger.




Cole twisted his body
toward her, his gaze twin caldrons of smoldering green. "Did you get it
all?" His voice was equally low but with a smoky quality that prickled the
hairs on her arms and nape into heightened awareness.




Insanity ruled over
common sense as she said, "Nope, there's still a little bit left."
Gwynn leaned into him. Her palm grazed his cheek as she cupped it and fit her
lips to his in a fleeting kiss, being sure to ply that spot in the corner with
a leisurely lick. The slight rasp of his stubble against her tongue sent tiny
tremors into her lower belly.




Cole pulled away, but
not far enough that she couldn't feel the warmth of his breath on her face. He
swiped a forefinger into the frosting of his cake then dabbed the icing onto
the middle of his bottom lip. "How about now?"




"You know, homemade
frosting is thick and stubborn. It clings to everything." Gwynn kissed him
again, taking care to nibble the icing until not a trace of it was left. She
slid her hand to the back of his head. His silky hair flowed over her fingers
and invited more than a brief touch. Cole moved his free hand to her waist,
insistent at the small of her back, setting off a host of tingles. He glided
his mouth over hers with a gentleness she hadn't expected from him. Sampling
chocolate from his lips was the sweetest thing she'd ever partaken of and she
didn't want the intimacy to end. She cupped the side of his face once more,
seeking to deepen the connection and find out if the heat threatening to melt
her was definitely from him and not the summer temperature.




He broke the embrace,
and she thought she caught a soft, shuddering sigh from him. "Well, that's
one way of removing a smudge."
