subscribe to my newsletter and get a bonus when CLOAK GAMES: FROST FEVER comes out

Putting together an omnibus edition or a short story collection is a lot of poky work, but it’s nonetheless fun – a little jaunt down memory lane, as it were.

Speaking of that, be sure to subscribe to my new-release newsletter. I’m hoping CLOAK GAMES: FROST FEVER will come out next weekend, and my new-release newsletter subscribers will get some free bonus short stories when it does.

CLOAK GAMES: FROST FEVER sample chapter

BNFrostFever

Occasionally I see articles from other writers wondering how to increase the number of comments on their blog or Facebook page or whatever.

The answer is simple. Just incorrectly identify a picture of a breakfast pastry on your Facebook page, and you’ll get lots of comments! :) Next week, I plan to incorrectly identify a Big Mac as a Whopper, so we’ll see if that drives traffic.

On a note completely unrelated to junk food, here is part of the first chapter of CLOAK GAMES: FROST FEVER. If all goes well, I hope to have it out in the first or second weekend of October.

CLOAK GAMES: FROST FEVER rough draft finished

I wrote 5,900 words today, and finished the rough draft of CLOAK GAMES: FROST FEVER.

I shall celebrate in the traditional fashion. Namely, by eating egg rolls.

no one expects the spelling police!

Belatedly, I kind of regret calling the secret police of the CLOAK GAMES setting the Inquisition, because “inquisition” is a really hard word to spell.

I’ve done this like twenty times in the last week:

I-N-Q-U-S-I…

No.

I-N-Q-U-I-S-I-T-O…

No.

And of course in the world of CLOAK GAMES, spelling “inquisition” wrong is likely an offense that comes to the attention of the Inquisition. :)

what’s next?

Now that FROSTBORN: THE WORLD GATE is out, it’s time to start the next CLOAK GAMES book, specifically CLOAK GAMES: FROST FEVER.

Actually, that’s misleading. I’m already two-thirds of the way through CLOAK GAMES: FROST FEVER, and am on chapter 8 of 12. Because of a variety of interesting circumstances  (maybe someday I’ll be able to tell the entire story), earlier in the year I had to teach myself how to work on two books at once, which is something I had never done before. But I’ve got the trick now, and I wrote most of CLOAK GAMES: THIEF TRAP while working on GHOST IN THE SEAL, and about half of CLOAK GAMES: FROST FEVER while writing FROSTBORN: THE WORLD GATE.

So next week I should finish the rough draft of CLOAK GAMES: FROST FEVER, and then it will be on to GHOST IN THE THRONE!

Nadia Moran is an interesting protagonist to write. Someone like Caina or Ridmark or even Mazael tries to figure out what the right thing to do is. Someone like Nadia only does the right thing once all other possibilities have been exhausted. :)  I’ve said before that I wanted to write a series about a bad guy who is dragged kicking and screaming into becoming a good guy, and she might be that bad guy.

eleven years to write a book

Today I read an article arguing that writers shouldn’t write more than four books a year. The idea is that the creative process suffers from haste, and a writer should spend time contemplating his work.

The article favorably cited one writer who had taken eleven years to write her book.

I dunno. Eleven years? Whenever I hear that a writer took eleven years to write a book, I wonder what they actually did with all that time.

WORLD OF WARCRAFT came out in 2004. That was eleven years ago, which I suppose might explain why it took so long to write that particular book.

Well, this year I’ve done six books, and I’m halfway through the seventh. If I get to eight like I plan, they’ll have to revise the article to warn against the dangers of writing eight books a year.

Windows 10: 101 Tips & Tricks Now Available

BNWindowsTen101Tips

My book WINDOWS 10: 101 TIPS & TRICKS is now available for $0.99 everywhere except Barnes & Noble, and it should show up on Barnes & Noble any minute now.

If you find yourself using Windows 10 and annoyed by all the changes, give WINDOWS 10: 101 TIPS & TRICKS a try. That’s why I wrote WINDOWS 8.1: 101 TIPS & TRICKS back in 2014, and the book succeeded pretty well at that mission. Hopefully WINDOWS 10: 101 TIPS & TRICKS will do the same.

It’s available at Amazon, Amazon UK, Amazon Germany, Amazon Canada, Amazon Australia, Barnes & Noble (coming soon), iTunes, Kobo, Google Play, and Smashwords.
