fun with Google Play Books

More and more of my book sales over the last year have come from Google Play, but for all that, I’ve never actually used the Google Books app, so I decided to rectify that.

It’s pretty nice! The app looks pretty and loads smoothly, and it’s slick how Google seamlessly syncs the read locations between different Android devices.

I’m not sure how it calculates page counts, though. For some reason it thought that FROSTBORN: THE FALSE KING was 1100 pages, and usually in EPUB format it lands at about 350 pages. But 1100 sounds so much more impressive!

MASK OF SPELLS excerpt

Let’s close out the week with a short excerpt from MASK OF SPELLS:

Perhaps Mazael could not trust her…but he could trust to her hatred.

Common enemies, Richard Mandragon had once told Mazael, made for a safer alliance than friendship or bonds of blood. The old lord had ruled the Grim Marches with an iron hand for nearly twenty years, so he had been right about that.

On the other hand, his teachings had twisted his son Lucan, so perhaps Mazael ought to take them with a grain of salt.

MASK OF SPELLS excerpt

Editing MASK OF SPELLS today, so let’s have a short excerpt!

“Among you, only Lady Romaria has been to the underworld before, so I must warn you of some of the more common dangers. A wide variety of mushrooms grows in the underworld. Some of them glow. Do not eat any of the mushrooms, glowing or otherwise.”

“While I may not possess your wisdom,” said Sigaldra, “I like to think I have at least sufficient wisdom not to eat a glowing mushroom.”

“You would be surprised.”

Frostborn #12?

A few readers have emailed to ask (and my website has gotten a lot of Google searches) asking when the twelfth FROSTBORN book, FROSTBORN: THE DWARVEN PRINCE is coming out.

Before the end of 2016! I’m almost done with MASK OF SPELLS, and once that is done, I’m going to get cracking on FROSTBORN: THE DWARVEN PRINCE.

After that, the plan is to alternate writing FROSTBORN and CLOAK GAMES books until FROSTBORN is finished in mid-2017.

Google Play!

September was my best month to date on Google Play. Thanks everyone!

The chart below shows Google Play sales progression for my books over the last year. You can see why I haven’t been eager to put my books into Kindle Unlimited.

how long did it take to write MASK OF SPELLS?

A really long time! (At least by my usual speeds.)

I started back in June, and worked on MASK OF SPELLS on the side while I finished FROSTBORN: THE FALSE KING and GHOST IN THE WINDS. The original plan was to finish MASK OF SPELLS immediately after THE FALSE KING, but towards the end of June I found out I was going to get really, really busy in Real Life during August and September. So I decided to write GHOST IN THE WINDS first, and I squeaked in to finish that just before I got really busy.

When GHOST IN THE WINDS was finished, I had already written 22,000 words of MASK OF SPELLS, and the remaining 72,000 words took 31 days, as the chart below shows.

I’m pleased that I didn’t actually miss a day, even though time did get quite tight a few times.
