CLOAK GAMES in 2018

I just saw the covers for the final three CLOAK GAMES books.

They look excellent! I am really looking forward to getting to the final three CLOAK GAMES books in 2018. Going to start on CLOAK GAMES: BLOOD CAST once GHOST IN THE GLASS is finished.

Interesting Links #2: Marketing!

Many of this week’s Interesting Links deal with book marketing.

A lot of writers hate marketing and think it’s a dirty word, but I don’t. The way I see it, there are people in the world who are looking for good books. I have good books. All I’m doing is helping people who are looking for good books to connect with my good books. Everybody wins!

-Kobo is now moving into the audiobook market: Have You Heard? Rakuten Kobo Launches Audiobooks.

-My original plan was to use Kindle Unlimited for the SILENT ORDER series, but popular demand from readers on other platforms changed my mind. But regardless of a writer’s publishing platform, it is always best to walk the straight and narrow way: You Can Win Without Cheating FFS.

-I’ve done a bunch of these, and they do add up when used in conjunction: 12 Ways to Keep Your Backlist Selling and Maintain a Steady Income.

-I figure that writing a good story with compelling characters counts. What do Readers Really Want: How to Write a Book to Market.

-I don’t think “enhanced ebooks” will ever take off, because an enhanced ebook is basically a computer game, and they’re separate categories: People Are Weird About Books, and Attempts to “Improve” or “Fix” Books in a Web Browser Prove It.

-Quite a lot of good marketing advice here: 45 Inspirational Marketing Tips from Authors.

-But! I liked this quote about advertising from The Passive Voice: “If anything, PG tends to be a bit more suspicious of advertisements in any medium because the ideas contained in the advertisement were presumably not able to rise to a higher level of visibility without someone paying money to cause the publication to give them more visibility.” Facebook Is Still In Denial About Its Biggest Problem.

-Given that I’ve seen exactly three people in my life who voluntarily bought Windows Phones, this was probably good advice: Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says he voted against Steve Ballmer’s $7.6 billion Nokia mistake.

-Publishers never used to compete for writers the way that ebook aggregators do: Announcing D2D Refer a Friend – Earn 10% of D2D’s royalty!

-I’ve been self-publishing for six and a half years now, so it was really interesting to read an experience that was very different from mine: Lessons Learned From 6 Years As An Author Entrepreneur.

SEVENFOLD SWORD character

Today I introduced a new character while writing SEVENFOLD SWORD: WARLORD: the High Warlock of the orcish city state of Vhalorast.

He’s not a nice fellow.

You don’t get to be the High Warlock of Vhalorast by election, inheritance, primogeniture, nomination, promotion, or by having good grades.

Interesting Links #1: Fun With Tablets

I’m trying something new this week. I read a lot of articles about technology, writing, and history on the Internet (probably too many, to be honest), and sometimes I think they’re interesting and I would like to share them. That said, I often don’t have anything profound to say about them, other than “this is interesting.”

So, I think on Friday I’ll do an Interesting Links post, where I share interesting things I’ve read over the course of the past week.

(It would have been Friday, but I did the SILENT ORDER: IRON HAND announcement on Friday this week instead.)

-The Kindle Fire tablets are a good value proposition: You Can Install Google Play on the Latest Fire Tablets in Less Than 5 Minutes.

-I’ve never played Guild Wars 2, but I love the soundtrack: William King on Guild Wars 2’s latest expansion.

-Speaking of the Kindle Fire, the new Fire HD 10 looks like an excellent device: Amazon Updates the Fire HD 10 Tablet with a Lower Price and a 1080p Display.

-You do have to try a lot of things before you find something that works: The secret to Amazon’s success? It’s constantly trying new things.

-No more 32-bit Ubuntu Linux, but I haven’t used 32-bit in year: Ubuntu Is Dropping 32-bit Desktop Images.

-If I buy one of these, my productivity is falling through the floor: Nintendo Super NES Classic Edition Review.

-Draft2Digital is a really useful aggregator, and I use to get my books into iBooks: 10 Sneaky Hacks for Draft2Digital.

-The funniest part of this review is the title: Apple Watch Series 3 review: LTE comes with high monetary and mental costs.

SILENT ORDER: psionics or telepathy?

Reader Lope asks concerning my SILENT ORDER science fiction series:

“Is your new series is going to be pure technologist or going to have psionic powers?”

In the five SILENT ORDER books I’ve written, there’s no telepathy or psionic powers.

That said, if I write future SILENT ORDER books I’m not going to limit myself. Some people get persnickety about what constitutes “hard” science fiction, but to be honest I don’t care. If I think a SF concept is cool and that it will work in a book, it doesn’t matter if it’s hard or soft SF, I’m going to run with it.

(Even FROSTBORN had a couple of science fiction-like bits in it.)

So, no telepathy or psionic powers, at least not yet. But as one reader pointed out, there are railguns. Lots and lots of railguns.

SEVENFOLD SWORD: WARLORD brief excerpt

4 chapters of SEVENFOLD SWORD: WARLORD down, 20 to go.

Let’s have a brief excerpt!

“Regardless,” said Aegeus, “it has been a very strange day.”

“For God’s sake! Don’t say that, Sir Aegeus,” said Ridmark. “The day isn’t over yet.”

SILENT ORDER: a change of plans

Upon reflection, I think using Kindle Unlimited for SILENT ORDER might have been a mistake.

So, course correction! In a few days SILENT ORDER: IRON HAND will be available on Barnes & Noble, iTunes, Kobo, and a Google Play, and the rest of the series will be on all the ebook stores next month.
