a Kindle Fire HD 10 review

I don’t do as much tech writing as I did a couple of years ago, but I’ve been fortunate enough to use a Kindle Fire HD 10 for the last few weeks, and I liked it enough to write a review:

Coming Soon: Excerpt Thursdays!

Starting this week, every Thursday I’m going to post a brief excerpt from one of my books.

I never used to do that because I thought I would repeat myself after too long. But the next four books I’m planning to publish are GHOST IN THE GLASS, SILENT ORDER: WASP HAND, SEVENFOLD SWORD: NECROMANCER, and CLOAK GAMES: BLOOD CAST, which will be 72nd, 73rd, 74th, and 75th novels, respectively.

75! That means I can post one excerpt a week for a year and a half without repeating myself. More if I include the longer short stories.

So, this coming Thursday will be the first Excerpt Thursday. It will be relevant to GHOST IN THE GLASS.

DEMONSOULED now available in paperback!

I am pleased to report that all seven volumes of the DEMONSOULED series are now in paperback!

As we consider what to get our loved ones for gifts at this time of year, there are many considerations to weigh when choosing an appropriate gift. Chief among those considerations is this question: does this gift have enough sword fights, epic battles, fantasy creatures, and duels among wizards?

And I can answer with confidence that the DEMONSOULED series outshines all other potential gifts!

CLOAK GAMES: the final trilogy

Passed 5,000 words of CLOAK GAMES: BLOOD CAST today.

I’m really excited to start on it, because the CLOAK GAMES series was basically divided into three trilogies, and this is the start of the final one.

It broke down like this:

Books 1-3 (Trilogy 1): Nadia tries to deal with her immediate problems, and realizes there are bigger and way more dangerous things going on.

Books 4-6 (Trilogy 2): Nadia gets exactly what she wants. This doesn’t go well.

Books 7-8: A bridge where Nadia comes to terms with what happened in CLOAK GAMES: TRUTH CHAIN.

Books 9-11: The End.

So it is exciting to start on The End.

If all goes well, we’ll have CLOAK GAMES: BLOOD CAST out in February!

Interesting Links #8: NaNoWriMo

A shorter installment of interesting links this week, thanks to the holiday weekend.

-I want to visit one of these someday: Amazon Just Announced Its Seventeenth Bookstore To Open In Bethesda, Maryland.

-The idea that people are getting tired of ebooks and abandoning them for paper books is (alas for the traditional publishers) simply wishful thinking: How Lifehacker’s Kindle Hit Piece Misses The Point.

-Seawater is nasty and destroys everything it touches, so this is kind of impressive: All-New Kindle Oasis Survives Ocean Dunking.

The Kobo Writing Life staff shares their adventures with National Novel Writing Month.

-In my personal opinion, a lot of academic journals exploit both their writers and editors: We Take Responsibility For The Content.

GHOST EXILE now available in paperback!

I am pleased to report that all nine books of GHOST EXILE are now available in paperback!

The Christmas season is upon us, and many of you will be looking for gifts. And you want a gift that says “I value you as a family member/friend/romantic partner.” And is there a gift that says “I esteem you” better than the nine paperback volumes of Caina Amalas’s adventures in GHOST EXILE?

No. No, there isn’t.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving, all!

I have many things for which I am thankful. It is good to remember the words of Abraham Lincoln’s original Thanksgiving Proclamation in 1864:

“Now, therefore, I, Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States, do hereby appoint and set apart the last Thursday in November next as a day which I desire to be observed by all my fellow-citizens, wherever they may then be, as a day of thanksgiving and praise to Almighty God, the beneficent Creator and Ruler of the Universe. And I do further recommend to my fellow-citizens aforesaid that on that occasion they do reverently humble themselves in the dust and from thence offer up penitent and fervent prayers and supplications to the Great Disposer of Events for a return of the inestimable blessings of peace, union, and harmony throughout the land which it has pleased Him to assign as a dwelling place for ourselves and for our posterity throughout all generations.”

Of course, the idea is far older than Abraham Lincoln, as this quote from the Book of Deuteronomy shows:

“You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.”

Also, I am really thankful for pie. Because pie!

a CLOAK GAMES: BLOOD CAST excerpt

Do we have time to sneak in a short excerpt from CLOAK GAMES: BLOOD CAST? Yes, I think we do:

Murdo grunted. “Hope you didn’t blow anything up without me.”

I grinned. It was a real smile, and not the usual grim rictus that had been my attempt at smiling for the last year. “Wouldn’t dream of it. Also, you have all the explosives.”

The FROSTBORN series now available in paperback!

I am pleased to report that all fifteen of the FROSTBORN books are now available in paperback!

And I know they would make good Christmas presents. How am I certain of that? Because one metric of determining the value of a Christmas present is by weight. And let me tell you, having hauled all fifteen of those books up a flight of stairs several times, that they are heavy.

SILENT ORDER: WASP HAND rough draft finished!

I didn’t expect that I would be able to finish the rough draft before Thanksgiving, but I did! The rough draft of SILENT ORDER: WASP HAND is done.

If all goes well, it should come out two weeks after GHOST IN THE GLASS comes out (which should hopefully come out the first week in December, barring technical difficulties).

Next up is RAIL GUN, a SILENT ORDER short story that I will give away for free to my newsletter subscribers when SILENT ORDER: WASP HAND comes out, and which will round out SILENT ORDER OMNIBUS ONE next year.

Interestingly, this month was National Novel Writing Month, and the goal of that is to write an entire novel from start to finish in November. I didn’t do that. I did, however, finish both GHOST IN THE GLASS and SILENT ORDER: WASP HAND, and I started CLOAK GAMES: BLOOD CAST. So I suppose it balances out.
