Congratulations to My Client David Bowles
My client David Bowles has had two kudos recently:
His novel Adam's Daughters: Book 2 in the Westward Sagas was named an award-winning finalist in the Fiction & Literature: Historical Fiction category of the Best Books 2010.
His blog, The Westward Sagas, was named a Top Genealogy Blog by Online Colleges and Universities!
David will join four other local authors whose books I edited and me on Saturday, October 30 for a group booksigning. Hope to see you there if you're in the San Antonio area.

Does Pointing Out Popular Posts Make Them More Popular?
[image error]Some time ago, I added the Popular Posts plugin to my blog. Since then, I've noticed that I'm getting a lot of comments on many of the posts listed as "Popular Posts." The list remains fairly consistent—at least eight of the ten posts listed are on the list consistently.
Does seeing a post identified as being popular make it more attractive to readers? Am I drawing attention to these few posts and consequently distracting attention from other older posts that I might think are even better? Should I be doing something different to get people to read more posts in the archive?

Sharing E-Books
A commenter on a previous post said he preferred print books because when he finished reading, he could pass the book on to a friend or a library, whereas e-books cannot be shared.
Passing e-books on to others does present a challenge. The difference is that when you give a copy of a print book to the library, you no longer have a copy of the book. If you give a copy of an e-book, you still have the copy on your hard drive so rather than sharing one copy of the book you have created a new copy.
I don't agree with draconian DRM (digital rights management) processes that don't allow e-books to be shared. Instead, I prefer to just remind readers that if they create and distribute additional copies of the books, they are cheating the authors.
On the other hand, I have no objection to readers having more than one copy of an e-book for their own or family use. There's no reason someone can't have different formats to read on their computer, an e-book reader (or more than one if they or family members have more than one), and a phone. That is like taking a print book from the living room to the bedroom to the den and reading in different locations.
In fact, when I create e-books for my publisher or my clients, I always create several different electronic formats and put them together in a single zip file. When a customer places an order, they download the zip file and can read whichever format(s) they want. Smashwords allows you to download any and all formats you want when you purchase an e-book and you can return and download again if you need to. Unfortunately, proprietary formats like the Kindle and Sony can be read only on specific devices.
It's primarily the large traditional publishers who put DRM on their e-books. Most independent and self-publishers make their books easily available but simply ask readers not to make duplicate copies of their books. Most small publishers price e-books reasonably, and you can find lots of free e-books, especially public domain books. So you don't have to spend a lot of money to read a lot of e-books.

Blog Action Day 2010: Water
Late one night last week, I went into the kitchen to refill my water bottle. There was no ice in the ice maker, and the temperature in the freezer was rising rapidly. The next morning, I called a repairman and arranged for service. By that evening the freezer was cooling again, and by the next morning, we had plenty of ice. In those hours in between, however, I thought I really had it tough having to drink my water at room temperature rather than ice cold as I like it.
These statistics from the Blog Action Day website made me realize how blessed I was to have that room-temperature water!
Every week, nearly 38,000 children under the age of 5 die from unsafe drinking water and unhygienic living conditions.
African women walk over 40 billion hours each year carrying cisterns weighing up to 18 kilograms to gather water, which is usually still not safe to drink.
Students in developing countries lose 443 million school days each year due to diseases associated with the lack of water, sanitation and hygiene. Repeated episodes of diarrhea and worm infestations diminish a child's ability to learn and impair cognitive development.
Every day, 2 million tons of human waste are disposed of in water sources. This not only negatively impacts the environment but also harms the health of surrounding communities.
Tens of thousands of children dying every day for lack of safe drinking water, and I complained that for a few hours I didn't have ice water!
Visit the Blog Action Day site to learn more about the critical water problems and find out what you can do to help.

Congratulations to My Client James Doughty
Congratulations to James Doughty, author of Some Monument to Last: Memoir of TV Journalist James Munoz with Family Poems and Letters. I was privileged to work with James to publish his book.
James, a reporter with KENS-5 TV in San Antonio, uses the name Muñoz (his mother's maiden name) on the air to honor his maternal family and Hispanic heritage and the name Doughty (his surname) in private life to honor his father and his paternal family's legacy.
Recently he received the 2010 TRIO National Achiever Award. In high school, James participated in Upward Bound, one of TRIO's programs to help disadvantaged students prepare for and succeed in college. He says that he would never have attended Texas Tech without Upward Bound and would never have graduated without the support and encouragement of TRIO.
Since then, he has actively supported TRIO in every city where he has worked. He serves as a motivational speaker for low-income, first-generation college students and has spoken to students about the process or writing and publishing his book.

Spam Can Be Funny
When I posted some funny spam a while back, one of my commenters suggested I do it from time to time. I'm sure your spam is as entertaining as mine is, but not all bloggers make the effort to dig through the junk to find legitimate comments. Lately I have been inundated with spam from people, or rather from names—robots need names, too—and I have to read at least some of it to determine if it is a legitimate comment or spam. Some of them tickled my funny bone, so I thought I'd share—even though all these spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors pain me almost as much as the spam—so you can have a chuckle as well.
Do they think insulting me will get me to approve the comment?
Didn't I read this EXACT SAME ARTICLE at another website yesterday? You know plagiarizing is a serious crime.
You really should change hosting companies. Your blog seems to be down about half the time I go there.
Go ***** yourself!!! I poured my heart out about my dog dying and you spam me. You are a lowlife that needs to crawl back into the hole you slitttered out from!!!!!!!
For what its worth, the layout is definitely amazing. You know how to balance writing and images/videos. However, I cant get over how little you actually bring to light here. I think that everyones said the same thing that youve said over and over again. Dont you think its time for something more?
Although I found this particular write-up quite fascinating, I couldn't help but to ponder whether or not the figures you utilized are legitimate. That statement looks pretty unusual to me. Any thoughts whether it is genuinely genuine?
What does this have to do with creating fictional characters (the topic of the post commented on)?
terrible list, pal, I read loads of your stuff and this can be a first thing i've ever really really disagreed having. Many of the songs you missed are cross generational along with iconic. ones #10 and #7 shouldnt look on here period.
How are these comments relevant to a thank-you to commenters post?
I simply love it when site owners talk about different cooking skills. Great skills.

Thanks so much for this intelligent post;this is the words that keeps me awake through the day. I have been looking around for this site after asked to visit them from a buddy and was thrilled when I was able to find it after searching for long time. Being a demanding blogger, I'm hopeful to see others taking initivative and contributing to the community. Just wanted to comment to show my appreciation for your post as it is very challenging to do, and many bloggers do not get admiration they deserve. I am sure I'll be back and will spread the word to my friends.
Nice posting on real estate interest rates. They are changing so quickly that buyers and sellers are not sure about WHEN to act on the market. That is what we are seeing in the Dallas market as well, specifically in the Plano real estate market where we are.
How can the post cover it while needing more content?
interesting post, pretty much covered it all for me although would of added more content.
How can you leave a comment on a post that isn't there?
This postis not actually showing up for me, I tried to web mail you. Could you get back to me about this.
Doesn't every blogger want to be addressed by the wrong name?
Awesome post sally, it's been a long-time since I've been on here. I see that nobody has lost their passion. Good to be back.
Is asking and answering your own nonsensical question supposed to be relevant?
The source seems to be down, does anyone have a backup or mirror url I can use. Thanks, oh I got your link ok.
