Devotion for Third Thursday in Lent 2012

There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried, and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.' But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.' And he said, 'Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house—for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.' But Abraham said, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.' And he said, 'No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' He said to him, 'If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.'" ~ Luke 16:19–31

Lord, I have so much, and it's easy to forget about those who have little or nothing. It is hard to imagine that people go hungry anywhere in the world, but especially in this land of plenty. Open my eyes to see the needs of those around me and open my heart to do what I can to help meet the needs. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Devotion for Third Wednesday in Lent 2012

And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them, "See, we are going up to Jerusalem. And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day." Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something. And he said to her, "What do you want?" She said to him, "Say that these two sons of mine are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom." Jesus answered, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?" They said to him, "We are able." He said to them, "You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father." And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers. But Jesus called them to him and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." ~ Matthew 20:17–28

Lord, thank You for the sacrifice of Jesus Christ Who gave His life as a ransom for many, including me. Lead me by the Holy Spirit to be the servant of others. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Devotion for Second Tuesday in Lent 2012

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, "The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat, so practice and observe whatever they tell you—but not what they do. For they preach, but do not practice. They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger. They do all their deeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long, and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbi by others. But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers. And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Christ. The greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. ~ Matthew 23:1–12

Heavenly Father, make me a servant even as Jesus came to the earth to serve others. In His name. Amen.

Devotion for Second Monday in Lent 2012

Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful. "Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you." ~ Luke 6:36–38

Heavenly Father, we often take Your mercy for granted, but it's much harder for us to merciful to others. We want you to forgive us, but we are slow to forgive those who hurt us. We want all the good gifts You offer, but we don't always want to give to others. Help me to remember and understand that how I treat others determines the blessings I receive. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Devotion for Second Sunday in Lent 2012

And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. And Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah." He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Rise, and have no fear." And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, "Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead." ~ Matthew 17:1–9

Lord, open my ears and heart to listen to Jesus. Take away my fears and give me the peace that passes understanding. In name of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior. Amen.

Devotion for Second Saturday in Lent 2012

Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom. And when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, but supposing him to be in the group they went a day's journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances, and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. And when his parents saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress." And he said to them, "Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?" And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart. ~ Luke 2:41–51

Heavenly Father, guide me by the Holy Spirit to have wisdom and understanding and to be in Your house. In the name of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior. Amen.

Reading Across America in Memory of Dr. Seuss

[image error] Today is the 15th observance of the National Education Association's Read Across America. The purpose of the event is to encourage and motivate children and teens to read.

Read Across America happens on March 2nd because that is Dr. Seuss's birthday. Imagine how many kids have developed a passion for reading from Dr. Seuss!

Schools, libraries, and community centers around the country are offering special events today. But you don't have to attend a formal event to participate. If you have children or grandchildren, spend some time reading with them today. Share with neighborhood kids how reading impacted your life when you were their age. Or pay a visit to Seusville and pretend you're a kid again, falling in love with Dr. Seuss's stories for the first time.

Devotion for Second Friday in Lent 2012

For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. "You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.' But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, 'You fool!' will be liable to the hell of fire. So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny. ~ Matthew 5:20–26

Lord, I am so tempted to blame others when disagreements occur. I want the other party to apologize, and I feel justified if they don't. But Your Words tells me to be reconciled to my brother. Lead me by the Holy Spirit to apologize and seek reconciliation wherever there is dissension in my life. In Jesus' name. Amen.
