Review: The Star Trek Starfleet Academy Experience (Ottawa, Ontario)

DSC_9105

Yeah, I’m a geek. And atotal Trekkie. I loved The Force Awakens, but Trek is still my fave. Willthis world premiereinteractive exhibit live long andprosper, or is there about to be a transporter malfunction?

No disclaimer needed here – we paid our own way in.

During the first leg of our ‘Yo Canada‘ trip, we stopped by the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, which holds the worldwide premiere of the interactive Star Trekexperience (AKAStar Trek: Starfleet Academy Experience). It’s based on the p...

The incredible costumes and characters at the Toronto Pride Parade (SFW)

DSC_0576

The Toronto Pride Parade 2016 capped off an unprecedented month-plus long event… and is that Justin Trudeau?

With Orlando still in the collective consciousness, a number of floats commemorated the lives lost in Florida.

Go on and wave the transgender flag!

DSC_0680

This is history right here, folks. You knew it was coming because of the large police presence in front of (and to the sides and back) of Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

I love how he’s lookingright at me!

A few photos from the Taste of Asia Toronto festival

DSC_0190

Afterseven years in Asia, you can get a little homesick.

Although it might not come as a surprise to GTA residents, the two-day Taste of Asia event wasn’t the only Asian food festivalhappening in Toronto thisyear. (The Asia Food Fest happened in April and May.) Off we went to find some tastes of our former home…

The stage’s schedule was kept pretty full, from Indian dancers to a kid’s talent show. Not pictured here was a side show of kiddie rides and a couple of carnival games, along with a...

Random pictures: the ‘Chris being ridiculous’ edition

DSC_7635

Oh, my long-suffering wife… or something like that…

The last few weeks of traveling Canada have been a lot of fun… especially in the ‘taking ridiculous pictures’ department. Some are selfies, some are taken by Laura, and at least one or two have been taken by passers-by.

Dandelions. EVERYWHERE! Seen at many roadsides across Atlantic Canada.

Yup, that’s right. We found the big strawberry. Somewhere in northern New Brunswick, pretty close to the bridge for PEI.

June book reviews: being the ‘white monkey’ and traveling the Americas

Once a month, I put together the books I’ve readinto a single review post. Alternatively, see plenty of previous book reviews over here, or see how I rate books.

Also, a quick disclaimer: review copies were provided or downloaded for free, and links may be affiliate links. These reviews cover the version of the book Ireceived, not necessarily the version that’s currently available. A newer or updated version may be available – check for yourself using the links below.

4 Ways to Save Money in Canada

Welcome to the first world.

It didn’t take long for us. It usually doesn’t, not when prices are what you’d expect from a first-world country. After almost 3 yearstraveling around much cheaper countries (two years in Thailand and nine months across South America), Canadacomes as a bit of a shock to the wallet.

Groceries, not restaurants.

If this sounds like a repeat from post about saving money in Switzerland… well…

Even in the cheaper hotels we’ve stayed in, a kettle or coffee maker is in th...

3 rules to reduce your chance of violence while traveling by 99%

Yep, that’s a bold claim.

Only 3 rules? You’re got to be kidding me. Nope – during a recent conversation at a hostel in Puno, Peru, these are what I came up with.

Rule #1: don’t look visibly drunk in public.

DSC_2705

The world doesn’t seembiased towards moderation – especially in places like Khao San Road in Bangkok.

Do note that ‘in public’ part. You’re off the hook if you’re drinking in your hotel room, the hostel lobby, or another sort of place where you don’t have to walk far to reach your bed.Th...

Getting started with Canada: an intro to traveling the epic country

Whether you’re ready to set off on an epic quest to cross the country or just want to see if Canada lives up to the hype, it’s time to learn what you’re in for. Canada is big. Real big.

Screen Shot 2016-05-18 at 10.36.42 PM

Although Russia is nearly twice as big, Canada ranks second in the world ‘land mass’ category, just above the United States and a bit larger than China. While most of that land is unlikely to hold a whole lot of stuff to capture your fancy, it does mean a lot of kilometers from point A to point B.

You’re (prob...

The next several months – or, Yo Canada

Canada weird places

Where’s Chris now?Canada.

No, we’redefinitely not going to be getting to all these dots quite yet. Quite a few of them aren’t open yet – Canada’s open / high season usually starts around Victoria Day, May 23rd this year, and isn’t really into high gear until we reach June.

Yes, there’s a joke about Canadians and stereotypes and howthe weather’s only nice enough to visit for three months out of the year… but I’ll pass on making it.

We arrived in Nova Scotia a couple weeks ago tovisit my wife’...
