The Two Pearls Drive-by: Alison Goodman

Voted by her peers as girl most likely to be the first female doctor – or a meerkat impersonator – Alison Goodman is also, as luck would have it, an extraordinarily talented writer. She taught me one of the most valuable writing techniques ever, that of reverse engineering

Sofa Ratings

We've spent a fair bit of time at furniture stores in the last few months … okay, we've done it twice, but it feeeeeeels like it's happened over and over again, like being trapped in a nasty temporal loop … and anyway, everything's got a sticker with a rating on it.

Softness rating. Bounce-back-ability of foam rating. Stain-resistant rating. Chance of

Charlie McDonnell, Video-Blogger, musician, and nerd

Hilarious, clever and a bit cool, is Charlie.

Also, he speaks to our dark lord and master, Neil, which is an interesting look at Doctor Who generational shifts.

Ikea + Whirlpool = a gigantic blackhole of customer service

When we bought the Whirlpool fridge on Saturday from Ikea, it seemed too good to be true. A 3.5 star energy rated fridge for $499.00.

Lee Battersby and QWC go together like peanut butter and jelly …

… or ramalamadingdong … or something …

Hey, look over there! An online writing course taught by Lee Battersby via the Australian Writer's Marketplace Online Learning Centre, under the auspices of QWC. More specifically, Sci-fi short story writing over 6 weeks at a cost of $150. Can't get fairer than that.

More details? I'm so pleased you asked – go here.

Major Squeeeeee

Just saw a copy of the galleys for The Year's Best Dark Fantasy & Horror 2011, edited by Paula Guran and I couldn't help but give a squeeeeee of excitement. Why, yes, it did scare some (okay, all) of my colleagues.

But it looks so awesome and I read over the beginnings of a few of the stories – Norman Partridge's
