Where the Wildthings Went
Sendak’s story of Max and the Wild Things has always been a favorite of mine. This short was done shortly after I moved to Montreal in 1997, and has been published a few times, including in the original edition of Revolver One. The image at the start was done some years later as a commission for a friend. Returning to the theme, depicting a Sendak beast flying over Montreal ET style on a tricycle. it’s my most popular print now, and the cover of the second issue of Revolver.
Helpless!
A short story about coming to terms with mortality. Written by A.J.Duric and published in both french and english in the past.
Misplaced!
A 4 page oneshot, silent comic about losing something it takes to imagine losing it. Based on a dream as told to me by A.J.Duric. You can get the story in print in Revolver One.

It’s still good ol’ Comics to me

OP ici on Facebook.
“The Term ‘Graphic Novel’ Has Had A Good Run. We Don’t Need It Anymore” – Glen Weldon NPR
So, this trivia has come up again. Ok Glen. A distraction then from the encroaching train wreck?
I have to suppress a giggle when I get asked about this as a “cartoonist/illustrator, what are you?”.
Sigh, whatever. What are they to you? Manga? BD? Albums?
For english, I’ve always liked the idea of Comics Novel for a fictional piece over 200 pages, Comics Novella for under and over 60 or so pages.
Comics “whatever the genre” or genre + Comics for the rest.
Yes, i know it’s plausible some might be inventive enough to mistake ‘Comic’ for Funny for ‘Comics’ for a Medium. But, really? Can we talk about the flaw with catering to the lowest common denominators?
I never got the anxiety over ‘comics’. I was lucky I suppose to be surround by people who thought they were pretty cool.
And if they didn’t, i guess I just never paid it much mind?
What are they to you? Manga? BD? Albums? Comics? Graphic Novels?
So in a way I agree with Glen. But, I’m not going to go around correcting people like that. Too old for it. Call them what you want, it’s all comics to me.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Lone Wolf and Cub Baby Cart!

They are putting out a collector’s edition of the climatic series in November, and asked me to do this exploded diagram of the baby cart for them.
There for an old fanzine, and many stills I took from the film for reference. That helped but I had to do a bit of invention too.
Like what do those guns look like beyond the barrel? I ended up basing them on an image of an old Norwegian Whale Gun! Looked like a primitive revolver that might plausibly be able to be made into a repeater.
I ended up leaving out the flap shields that we see around the upper part of the cart in WHITE HEAVEN IN HELL, it felt like it was going to get too busy and the AD agreed.
I’m not sure if they will end up using my numbering system, they have it both with and without, this version was meant to function as a guide for them with the option to use it if they like.
I really enjoyed doing the research. It’s been ages since I watched those Screened three of them while working on this. Enjoyed the comics as well when they came out in english as a teen. So this is definitely another fun feather in the cap gig as a fan of genre entertainment. :)
I don’t think I’d want to do more rigorous technical diagrams, but more illustrations of this sort would be fun!

The 2nd Salon BD MTL was a HIT!
Just noticing I missed posting the pre-event news here?
I’ve been bad about keeping the home base site updated!
Well, here’s the latest, cross posted from Spilt Ink and Patreon…
Ok so first, I spent a good part of three months planning the second edition of the Salon BD MTL!
That was two weeks ago today, on the 28th, and it went extremely well all in all I think!
Thanks to everyone who came out to it and our sponsors, who all participated in the unique experience of filling a room with doodlers! Our round tablelist had great chats I hope to be able to post the audio of soon. I think they, the featured artists and the crowd had fun doing a bit of Jamming, and quite a few pages were completed!
By the numbers!
* Approximately 130+ attendees,
Guests and Feature artists included,
passed through the Salon doors!
* 55 pages of Comics Jams were started
and completed, another 11 left half done.
* We recorded two hours
of round table talks.
Hopefully lots of attendees got to make new comics art acquaintances in the local scene. My hope for the Salon is to be an artist oriented comics event. Festivals and conventions are very market focused, the Jam is about the cartoonists getting our of our studios and into an environment we can share and learn from each other in.
When I hosted the Monthly Comic Jams that was often the goal as well, now that I teach I feel like holding the Salon’s periodically is a good fit.
The information sharing aspects of the event could be expanded on a bit I think next year. I didn’t end up doing it but some of the guests and I had talked about giving presentations as well. We might try that.
The venue was a great fit, if not always a comfy one. We’ll have to think about that but for now the aesthetic of Theatre Sainte-Catherine Café-Bar is perfect. They were very helpful the night of and were enthusiastic about the night. I think it’s very likely we’ll use the space again, though we did strain the capacity with things getting a bit packed for most of the night! With a bit more forewarning the stage can be set up smaller next time making more room for tables and seats. And we’ll plan for tickets earlier in advance too.
It’s going to take a bit to go through all the material created by the Jam, but these 6 are a few examples of the best! Something I forgot to do was make sure everyone signed their panels! If you recognize your own or a friends work, drop me a line and let me know! I’d be happy to add credits!

Salgood Sam @ Toronto ComiCon – Table P23A!

Been putting off getting one of these for a long time, the standing banners everyone has now for their convention appearances!
This one incorporates bits of art from 5 stories, some of my favorites. Top is from A Bastards Tale, bottom is from Dream Life. And the small insets are Sea of Red,Dracula Son of the Dragon, and Therefore, Repent!
Found a good rate as it turned out with my regular go to copy shop too, going to take it in to get printed for next week’s appearance at the Toronto Comic Con!
I’ll be at table P23A!
Look for it there, right between Marco Rudy & David Cutler, two tables from my mentor Ty Templeton and in spitting distance of the infamous Rob Liefeld! Say what you will about the guy’s art but I hear he’s a gent, so look forward to making the acquaintance. If nothing else I owe him thanks for his part in the invention of Image comics! There will be a bunch of other freinds and roll models there so looking forward to it!
I’ll have Dream Life with me, and Therefore Repent! Along with prints and some original art. My Con sketches will go for between $40 and $80 or so, subject to and depending on complexity.

What’s new?
I’ve totally fallen behind on updating my blogs!
Things have become pleasantly busy with drawing,
and teaching, keeping me more than occupied.
But still, overdue!
I submit my messy studio
as proof of business.
How is everybody? I’m well. I’m planning an event in Montreal – sign up here to get news about that – There will be news very soon hopefully re guests and things, things are falling in place. It’s to be a night of Jamming and Jawboning for cartoonists and lovers of the form in Montreal.
In other news, The Patreon got off to a nice start but a year in has held stable for a while. Partly due to my intermittence in promoting it I fear. And a recent shift to mostly lower level pledges means the total has gone down a bit in fact, slightly offset by the dramatic decline of the Canadian Dollar recently.
Patreon is in USD, so I get a nice boost from the exchange rate.
Still though, I’d like more pledges for sure. The current goal is to get to $350 a month, most of my rent. That means about a 175 pledges at $2 each. Could take fewer if folks pledge more and I have a few reward tiers for that to encourage it. I’ve taken out formal “teaching” as I find that hard to do online. I teach privately at my home though, contact me if you’re interested. But there’s still the option to get postcards or convention sketches!
I did this fantasy illustration as a commision for one of my patrons recently. I’d be glad to do something for you if you pledge too! Once a year you’ll be able to request something like this for yourself or another for a consideration of $15 a month. That’s just 180 a year, a pretty good deal for original art to your specifications.
Even without more of those though, still 175 patrons giving just 2$ pledges monthly seems like a reasonable number to hope for in my audience? Certainly from some of the stats I’ve looked at, many can afford it! So I hope I can entice a few more in time! And I think it’s well worth the deal. Free access to a digital library of all my independent comics and bonus patron’s only content shared to the patreon blog!
I think getting a bit more focused about my posting regularly on my site blogs again would help for sure, both comics but other things too. I’ve probably been spending a disproportionate amount of time with the community on Facebook and neglected these platforms. Partly it’s due to mostly working on comics I’m sharing in the rough–lots of process but have to hold back final work on for now. Ironically if you are a patron, you get to see that all sooner. But for now only Kickstarter and Patreon readers get to read Dracula first.
I’m doing a fair bit of posting and instagramming for my classes, and editing my teaching sites for Dynamic Drawing, and Making Comics. And there’s other stuff I could share too, work on commissions and things or just a bit of Blogging. But time is the shortage. I fear it’ll be sporadic this summer at best.
A Bastards Tale is currently holding up Revolver Four, I got it started but then hit a problem….basicly involving how to represent myself, and my dead father in the story! That sounds more dramatic that it is, but it was a tough problem and I ran out of time to get it done, had to get back to drawing Dracula some more, get a big chunk of Dracula done if not rap it all up before I can go back to it! Probably the latter as really, it’s much too late already.
Frustrating but making comes is often about deferred pleasure and keeping and eye on the long game.
So that’s it for now, I’ll post about my thing in April in a week or so…check in here or sign up to the list if you want to come to my MTL comix Salons!
