NYCC 2013 wrapup.

The stress of the last two months finally subsided after the party Saturday. Once all the adrenaline left my body, I was in actual pain. My joints ached. Like any other NYCC or big convention I didn't get to see half the people I wanted to see. I made it to Artist Alley once or twice but never more than the hour I was there for Dare 2 Draw doing portfolio reviews.
Again, if you were looking for me, and couldn't find me, I apologize. Between the panels and signings in various places, i was stretched a bit thin.
The success of the launch party was key to my relief. It was overwhelmingly gratifying to have those who made it in attendance, and I thank you.
Now my next step will be fulfilling my Kickstarter orders, which will take time. I'm doing the shipping myself since I can't afford an assistant. It's my goal to get the books and prints to everyone as soon as possible.
There's also something else on the horizon, which will be announced fairly soon, and i'm excited to be involved in. It won't be as an artist, Since my work on The Terminator begins in earnest now. It will be very cool and I hope a big part of taking Molly Danger to the next level.
But for now, I rest.

Who's Getting Disintermediated? Questions for the ICv2 Conference

We had an interesting conversation on the plane on the way out to San Diego Comic-Con with an artist who’s currently working for Marvel. He told us of how his revenues from selling original art and prints on his Website were steadily growing, as were his Twitter followers, and how he was planning to use those assets to launch a new original Webcomic, followed by a Kickstarter, followed by traditional graphic novel publishing.
Others are going from Webcomics to digital release, to print collections.
And some forgo the Webcomics, release the installations of the product digitally, and collect them into trade paperbacks when they’ve got enough material.
Any of the models above can be coupled with merch sales direct from creator to consumer.
These business models, or elements from them, are increasingly the way that creators or publishers can launch original intellectual properties, test the reaction, hone the material, and build an audience. The new tools enabled by technology, including direct interaction between creators and their fans, comics on the Web, digital sales of comics, and crowdfunding, can replace or enhance the traditional methods of releasing a print product, gauging the reaction, and adapting for future releases.
This new, more direct, contact between creators and fans has the potential to replace a lot of functions previously performed by publishers, distributors, and retailers, the three-tier model that’s been used to distribute comics for the past decades.
How will this impact the business going forward? Will increasing numbers of creators opt out of the traditional distribution channels of comic stores and bookstores?
Or will they just use the new tools to build an audience, get a bigger share of the pie from their most devoted fans, and continue to use traditional publishing to reach the rest of the market?
We’ll try to find the answers at the ICv2 Conference at New York Comic Con in the panel on “From Creator to Consumer” with this panel of experts:
Calista Brill, Senior Editor, First Second Books
Simon Fraser, artist, runs the ACT-I-VATEcomix Webcomics collective
Jamal Igle, artist, successful Kickstarter publisher, lecturer
Dan Manser, Director of Marketing, Diamond Comic Distributors
John Roberts, Co-founder, comiXology
Moderated by Heidi MacDonald, comic editor and commentator from The Beat
Comics Ahead!—The ICv2 Conference will take place at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, October 9th.

And if you’d like to suggest questions or discussion topics for our panel (there’ll be lots of press at the Conference, so you’ll hear what people say even if you’re not there), feel free to contact moderator Milton Griepp (Mgriepp@icv2.com).

"This sounds like a lot of gushing, and that’s because it is. I think that this first quarter of Molly’s story is amazingly well-told and well-illustrated. But I also think it’s capital-I important. Mr. Igle set out to be the change he wanted to see in an industry that’s given up wonder and joy for darkness and cynicism. He could have written snarky op-eds and complained on comics news sites. Instead, he created a character that could inspire his own little girl while still remaining just as dynamic, exciting and heroic as the boys.
This is work worth doing and worth supporting. And if you don’t think so, then we probably can’t be friends anymore."-Joshua Unruh, Bookgasm.com

"All in all this 54 pager serves as a great introduction, with a lot more Molly than danger. Nevertheless, it does a great job in showing us this fun, youthful, yet emotionally troubled, character. Molly Danger is the type of character young comic readers could relate to, whilst the older generation is left longing to give her guidance. But young or old, prepare yourself to be blown away by some truly stunning visuals." -Byron Hendricks, Fortress of Solitude

"Jamal Igle set out to create a hero which reflected girls back to themselves. Not as sexualized objects of fan service, nor an attempt at equality by making a female mirror to an established male figure, but as a her own interesting personality. Not only does Molly take a much-needed shot at established masculine paradigms, but Jamal has set out to challenge the cynicism which seems to pervade sophisticated comics."- Shawn Mohr, geekyuniverse.com

"Molly Danger: Book One doesn’t just provide satisfying, entertaining, and dynamic story in its own right, but it also promises a larger narrative in future books. "Ultimately that’s what I feel the book is getting at: what’s it really mean to be human, and to be a human girl, at that? Issues with identity are ones that we struggle with from the time we hit grade school until …well, I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have questions about who they really are, to be honest, and that’s exactly what puts this book squarely in the all-ages category for me. Best laid plans.
The decision to add a "thank you page" to Molly Danger book one was a last minute one. I wanted to add it because I am grateful to you all for helping the book become a reality. Unfortunately because of the time table we found ourselves under in order to make our newly amended shipping date, we had to scramble to finish the production work. In the chaos, we missed a page of backers names. This was our fault ( Karine and I) and I couldn't be more embarrassed about it.
