The Ray Covers in Black and White

With issue # Shipping on Wednesday the 22nd, (I'll be working and flying to london for the London Super Comic con, I thought I'd present the original pencils and inks for the Ray covers.

As you can see i did a lot of cover sketches for each issue. You'll notice a different hair line for the original pencils for issue 1's cover. DC decided they wanted the more"bald" look after the fact and I obliged.

I played with the sizing to get the effect right for the cover for issue # 3.

All the covers were inked traditionally with brush and pen. As tight as the pencils are there's a level of solidity required for the digital treatment and I dont have a Cintiq yet. I will be experimenting in the near future with Digital inking.

Person of Interest

One of the advantages of being freelance is being able to juggle multiple jobs at once. One such job was a sketch that appeared on last night's episode of the TV series "Person of interest" on CBS.The synopsis:
In the NightReese (Jim Caviezel, left) is on the case when The Machine identifies Darren (Astro, right), a teenager whose brother was just murdered, as the next POI. Meanwhile, Finch is growing concerned that the son of his former business partner is dangerously close to finding out about The Machine, on PERSON OF INTEREST. Photo: John P. Filo/CBS ©2012 CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights ReservedDarren, a budding artist and comic book fan, had a prop notebook of sketches and the above sketch was used as the final "hero shot" in the episode.

From the vaults. Supergirl #59 The Final Issue.

I almost made this my christmas card, LOL.

I've been trying to figure out what to say about this issue. What I could say about the art and the time but I keep falling short of the proper grandeur I keep reaching for.

I think there really is only one way to approach this.
Thank you.
Thank You Sterling, for being one of the best creative partners I've ever had. Thank you Keith Champagne, Jon Sibal, Marc Deering, John Dell and Robin Riggs for keeping up with my maddening exponentially growing obsession with detail. Thank You Nei Ruffino, Blond and Tom Chu for the beautiful color work you did. Thank you to all of the letterers who worked on the series. Thank you Nachie Castro, Wil Moss and Matt Idelson for showing faith, allowing me to experiment visually and pushing me to imrpove.
Most of all, Thank you Supergirl fans, for the love and occasional ire that you showed me over the years.

We wanted to bookend the series and I think the matching splashes from issue #34 and issue #59 say it all, don't you?

From the vaults. Supergirl #58... The finale part 1

So here we are,brethren..The finale of two years of often hard and occasionally overwhelming work. We took an issue off and the entire team returned in full force for the final two issues. Jon Sibal on inks, Blond on colors, a cover by Amy Reeder and we were off to the races.

Security guard 1 is based on my buddy Drew. Security guard 2 is based on my other friend, Victor

I really wanted to milk the emotion from the scene, so I played it small. I kept Toyman's movements limited and shy.

Kid one is based on a picture of myself about 10 years old.

I love this scene so much, All of the tension between Cat and kara for almost two years finally came to a head and played out so well. The hardest part sometimes, are the intimate moments, no broad action, just small moments. We also have a minin Bat cameo in the form of Detective Harvey Bullock GCPD.

the entire idea behind the Dollmaker , in my head was to harken back to a bygone era visually, sort of the antithesis of modern character design. I initially had this image of a sort of broken, fractured version of Little Lord Fauntleroy but it was a little too similar to to Klarion the witchboy. Matt Idelson suggested version 2, which as much more modern looking kid. I went back to the well with the third design, actually looking at some old images of cobblers and toymakers from the 18th century. I'n my head, his apron was made of human skin. Sterling suggested a more steampunk approach but we ultimately went with version 3.

The final confrontation between Lois and Lucy
