WeWriWa: The Cost of Bravery – LOVE’S OWN REWARD – On S*A*L*E for just $0.99!!

We like to think that if a dangerous moment demanded it, we’d rise to the occasion without thought to personal consequence. But journalist Jess Randall knows that’s more fiction than truth . . . until he’s proven wrong . . .

Her act of courage destroys everything . . . Charlene “Charley” Carter risked her life to rescue a child from a burning car. Suddenly, the quiet research assistant becomes a media darling—and a half-million dollars richer, thanks to the boy’s grateful grandparents. But big money brings big moochers and bigger betrayals. Charley retreats, wounded and suspicious about the motives of even those dearest to her.
He doesn’t trust that she’s for real . . . Jess McMasters exposes frauds for a living, and if it means using his charms as well as his tough skills as a journalist, no problem. What’s Charlene Carter trying to gain by refusing to be interviewed by the press? Is she angling for more money—or is she hiding secrets that prove she’s nobody’s hero?
Jess goes undercover to get close to her, but the closer he gets, the less he understands. Except this: the cost for his deception could be his own heart. The Excerpt
Writing as Dana Ransom, LOVE’S OWN REWARD was the first of four contemporary romances I published with BelleBooks, where I also wrote paranormals for their ImaJinn Books line under my own name. As one of the first independent small presses to bring a diverse range of titles to avid readers, I was thrilled to be included amongst its authors.
It was the bravest damn thing he’d ever seen. She was only a little bit of a thing, so delicate she might have been confused with a girl. He could remember every finely-cut line of her face as she’d dashed in front of his stopped car; so small and yet possessed of a courage that put the rest of them to shame. While others watched, himself included, she’d scrambled into the compact, heedless of the danger, to bring out the little boy . . . and if that wasn’t enough, she’d gone back toward certain death in an effort to save the kid’s parents. She couldn’t, of course. Jess had known that the moment he saw the fuel ignite, but it hadn’t stopped her from trying. She’d fought him like a madwoman when he’d pulled her away, barely seconds before she’d have been engulfed in the same fiery ball that consumed the car. Such amazing strength in such a tiny package. He’d been awed by her.
(. . . and a bit more . . .)
Until this event had played out before his disbelieving eyes, he’d shunned stories of heroism. Then he’d felt the frantic beat of her big, big heart against his chest. He’d felt the helpless trembling of her despair as he held her in his arms. And never had anything touched him so strongly, so powerfully, so tenderly as that moment. As that woman.
Why had she taken the money?

WeWriWa: A Paranormal Knight’s Tale . . . MIDNIGHT CRUSADER – Now Just $0.99!!

In honor of MIDNIGHT CRUSADER’s $0.99 sale through May 15, I rewatched Heath Ledger’s A KNIGHT’S TALE (a difficult task, I know. Sigh . . .) to get in the mood for a little romantic Medieval mayhem (and am, as I type, stomping my feet to “We Will Rock You”!). I’d forgotten how much I adore this movie. Just as I’d underestimated how far down the Round Table rabbit hole I’d fall with a revisit to one of my favorite books. Take historical daring do, a true love tragically lost, then mix in a quest across the ages. This dangerous search for a stolen HEA brings centuries-old vampire Gabriel McGraw to Las Vegas where a dinner show featuring joisting for a fair maid’s hand begins to jar Naomi Bright’s missing memories back to life . . . and places them both in deadly peril as they search for the happiness denied them. Here’s a taste as gathering darkness takes on a new face for an age-old vengeance.Midnight Crusader (Touched by Midnight Series - Book 9)Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo Books | iBooksPublished: May 4, 2011Length: 228 PagesAdd to Goodreads TBR→
A love without end . . . Having given up his mortal life to search for his lost love through the centuries, vampire Gabriel McGraw begins his final crusade to free her from an enemy’s grip against the glittery backdrop of Las Vegas. But is she the same woman he loved and lost or an equally dangerous foe who could betray all that he believes in?
Naomi Bright’s memories go back no farther than her arrival in Sin City. Does her hidden past conceal madness or a truth too terrible to be believed? Compulsion draws her toward a medieval fantasy world, and obsession to a man she instinctively knows but can’t remember.
Will finding the answers release her from her prison of fear? Or will it ensure that she loses everything - her life, her love . . . her soul?

Don’t miss this chance to grab up one of my favorite books for pocket change, now through the 15th while it’s Midnight in the City that Never Sleeps!
Dawn was close, and he was no closer to his reward as he demanded, “Who is this woman who’s worth so much trouble to you and to me?”
“She is the past . . . and the future.”
Growing tired of word games, he grumbled, “But what good does it do for her to be there and you to be here?”
“Oh, I don’t plan to remain here for long . . . at least, not all of me.”
Quinton Alexander sighed in frustration. “Everything with you is a puzzle.”
“I thought you liked puzzles.”
“Ones I can eventually solve.”
“Oh, believe me, you will figure it out soon, for you are an important piece as my link to this century. I could not do what I plan without the knowledge you possess as the doorway through which I will pass.”
( . . . and a bite more . . .)
“Yeah, right,” Quinn mumbled, not even pretending to understand or to care as he insisted, “Now, what about your promise?”
“Oh, I always keep my promises. You will be wealthy beyond your wildest dreams. You will have power unlike anything you can imagine.”
“I can imagine a lot, and I have very vivid dreams.” He smiled, his eyes glittering with anticipation. “Give them to me.”
“But there is a catch.”
Cautiously, he took a step back. “Oh? What catch?”
“You will have to enjoy them through me. Or rather, I will enjoy them within you.”
And the beast sprang, delivering his promise with the slashing of claws and fangs.

I can’t help but hear “We Will We Will ROCK You!” going through my head. Get ready for a great ride! I’ll have another taste for you next weekend.
“Tell me what I must do.”
“You need only survive, young sir. Survive to conquer the years, the centuries, however long it takes for you to seek out her tortured soul.”
“However long it takes,” Gabriel affirmed, not truly understanding the magnitude of his pledge.
“Then you will be transformed this very night so you might begin your search in an existence where time holds no meaning.”
He never saw her physically move.
One instant, she was staring at him with an almost hypnotic intensity, distracting him from the fact that the three of them were no longer alone in the room. Shadows shifted from within the unnatural stillness to become figures looming just out of the light.
He heard Rolland’s briefly uttered warning and the rasp of his sword. But Gabriel had no time to react with alarm or instinct.
(And a bite more . . .!)
The crone was upon him, knocking him flat upon his back. His hands were gripped before they could find sword and dagger in his own defense. And then came the pain, swift and sharp, at his throat, at his wrists and elbows. He tried to cry out, but no sound of protest came neither to mouth nor eventually to mind.
So, this was death, this slow, chill sinking into dark oblivion.
He surrendered to the sapping weakness of body even as a part of him clung to the strength of his resolve.
For Naomi.

IWSG – Dealing With Distrac—“Oh, look! Squirrel!”

Oh, thanks! Give me THIS question when I’m co-hosting and trying to appear ultra professional! I’ll get this confession out of the way – I’m ADD/OCD. I know. That’s like pouring hot fudge on plain white bread. Hmmm, I wonder if we have any hot fudge in the fridge, maybe some marshmallows . . . Oh, sorry. Back to the topic. Distraction.
My eldest son was three when I got the call from New York to publish my first book. I was proofing the galleys to Book 3 in the hospital after giving birth to my second son. Since I’m not a night owl, I’d get up at 4:30 a.m. – every day! – grab coffee, my WIP and get to work (on legal pads and a manual typewriter prior to my first computer!) before my boys woke up. Then it was ‘Professional Mom mode’ time. I wrote when they were at school. I wrote longhand on note paper at little league games and did mental edits while driving to scout meetings or while washing dishes, and plotted scenes in the car on my way to my 9-to-5 once the boys were in school full-time. My motto: “The path of least resistance.” If you need the time, you’ll find the time. No excuses. No distractions.
You’ll never guess what my worst problem is now in getting writing done.
Too much time.
Now that I’m retired, you’d think I’d be cranking out a four-to-five book series every year. I wish. TOO much time is its own distraction. It seems like the second I fall into a writing rhythm, I hear the fam wandering around or watching talk shows or sports LOUDLY on TV or trudging up the steps to my office to pet the cats. Sigh . . . It makes me wonder if it’s time to just let the writing career go and become a retired Netflix-addicted cat mom. I could do that . . . for about 8-to-10 days. Then those plots would start spinning and those character voices would begin to whisper, “When am I going to get my story?”
Time is on my side . . . I just need to make use of it.
And this month, that means promoting two sales in different genres and by different names . . .
From May 1 to May 15, it’s stalking the dark sidewalks of Las Vegas with a woman looking for her memories and a centuries-old vampire trying to save his lost love, in MIDNIGHT CRUSADER, only $0.99.Preview Midnight Crusader (Touched by Midnight Series - Book 9)Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo Books | iBooksPublished: May 4, 2011Length: 228 PagesAdd to Goodreads TBR→Preview Love's Own Reward

And, from May 16 to May 31, a fraud-busting journalist searches for the true story behind a shy researcher gifted with a huge windfall for saving a child’s life in LOVE’S OWN REWARD w/a Dana Ransom, a rewarding heart-twister for just $0.99.
But now, off to my job as one of this month’s co-hosts to glean your wisdom on how to deal with distraction. I’ll be taking notes . . .

“There’s something wrong at the Noir, with those women, with Anna Murray. It’ll sound crazy.”The MIDNIGHT books were special because they were set in places where I’d gone for writers’ conferences and used the occasions to research. The memory of the escalator in D.C. leading down to the subway trains features on the cover will also bring a chill.
“Try me.”
“In that tape of the four of us, Anna Murray is missing as in doesn’t photograph.”
“Not in photos, not in mirrors, not so strange at all . . . considering.”
Nick leaned back and studied her features warily. “Considering what?”
“What she is, what most of the other women at the Noir are.”
“Unnatural.”
( . . . and a bite more . . .)
The explanation came to him with a sudden clarity. “That’s it, isn’t it? What are they?”
“Vampires.”
His hands fell away from her. For a moment, he could only stare, then he issued a soft laugh and a wry, “I picked a hell of a time to stop drinking.”
“Sit down, Nick, and I’ll make coffee.”

The Excerpt
I’ve had such fun getting back into these books that I’m tempted to . . . write more in the series. What do you think? Would you be ready to step into TOUCHED BY MIDNIGHT again?
“Are you crazy, Dr. Reynard?”
“W-what?”
“You know, crackers, looney tunes, nuts, bonkers . . . are you insane? Is your instability going to put all of us in danger once we get out into the jungle? My job is to protect your oldest, dearest friend on his little hunting and gathering trek into the wilds and I’ll have enough to worry about without waiting for you to go falling off the deep end.”
“Don’t worry about me, Mr. Cobb,” came words chiseled out in stone, “I’m not your concern.”
“You’re wrong there, Doc. You are my problem and I’ve got to decide how to deal with you.”
She drew herself up with a fiery indignation. “You don’t get to decide anything. You’re just the hired help here, along for the paycheck with no stake whatsoever in this.”
“That’s right—nothing except my life and, excuse me, but I do tend to place some value on that. I get to decide where I’m going to risk it, so if I’m going to go out there and put it on the line for, as you put it, the paycheck, I need to know if you can keep it together.”
( . . . and a bit more . . .)
“I’ll be fine, Cobb.”
“Will you? Are you? Then tell me what you saw earlier tonight in your room.”
“I didn’t see anything.” When his steady stare wouldn’t let her leave it at that, she added, “Anything real, okay. Is that what you wanted to hear—that I’m nuts, bonkers and all the rest, that I have a hole in my memories large enough to drive a semi-truck through? That I can’t trust myself to know what’s real?”
“Trust me.”
His sudden intensity dragged her back from the edge of hysteria.
“Why should I trust you, Cobb?”
“Because I can protect you if you let me. I know you’re not crazy . . . because I know what’s out there, and it’s real.” He touched the scar on his face without being aware of the gesture. “A nightmare that will suck you in and suck you dry if you let it. I won’t let it, Doc.”

WeWriWa: A Story That Never Ends . . . By MIDNIGHT

I had such fun sinking my teeth (so to speak) into my vampire romance, MIDNIGHT REDEEMER, during last month’s sale, I thought I’d use the month of April to feature MIDNIGHT SHADOWS and MIDNIGHT MASQUERADE to bridge the gap between it and the final book of the series, MIDNIGHT CRUSADER, which goes on S-A-L-E in May (!). It’s no secret that I LOVE writing a series of books, whether historical, contemporary, or paranormal. And when I can do all three in the same series . . . Woo Hoo! The “Midnight” world has taken me from Regency England to the French Revolution and Jazz Age ‘20s, from Turn of the Century New York to steamy jungles of modern Peru, night dangers in Seattle, power-hungry D.C., and finally, to the dazzle of Las Vegas. What a journey it’s been! If you haven’t taken it with me . . . there’s still time to get on board!
MIDNIGHT SHADOWS places Frank Cobb (who made himself irresistible to me as Dr. Stacy Kimball’s bodyguard in the previous book, MIDNIGHT REDEEMER ) on a plane to the jungles of Peru to protect ethnologist, Sheba Reynard from the deadly mysteries of her past. It’s no secret that Cobb is my absolute favorite in the series, and here’s a look at why . . .Midnight Shadows (Touched by Midnight Series - Book 7)Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo Books | iBooksPublished: May 3, 2011Length: 224 PagesAdd to Goodreads TBR→
She doesn’t believe in monsters . . . Myth-busting ethnologist, Sheba Reynard's life's work is proving that destructive paranormal beings don’t exist. But while exposing hoaxes, she's also hiding from the frightening shadows in her past that say differently. To find the missing pieces of her memory that continue to haunt her dreams, she must face the truth behind the nightmares . . . a truth that could lead to madness or even death.
He doesn’t believe in death . . . Frank Cobb knows monsters are very, very real. He's pursued a wily vampire into the jungles of Peru, prepared to face the demon with only his very human skill set. But are his motives—to bring the creature back for government research—purely business or for revenge? Either way, he’s not happy to have an annoyingly strong-willed—and utterly irresistible—woman getting in his way.
Forced together by circumstance, they venture into the shadowy unknown. Only it soon becomes clear that one of them will have to surrender their quest . . . if the other one is to make it out alive.
“Ms. Gideon continues to run in the fore-front of the vampire romance genre. Non-stop action and passion combined in an exotic setting will definitely thrill fans, leaving them craving more. —Kathe Robin, Romantic Times
“Nancy Gideon is one of the best supernatural writers on the market today!" — Midwest Book Review/BookWire The Excerpt
Boom. There it is. And it garnered my favorite review quote:
“It’s real.”
She reacted with a snorting laugh. “Real, as in the Fanged Deity the Indians worshiped before the Incas? Oh come on, Cobb, you can do better than that.”
But his expression remained somber and his stare unblinkingly sincere. “Sheba, there are monsters, and I know this one by name.”
She tried to laugh it off, but the attempt lodged in her throat, a hard, choking lump of horrible truth, because she knew Cobb was not lying to her. But to say she believed him was to let her own personal demons loose. She wasn’t ready for that yet.
“I’ve heard a lot of different names, Cobb, Which one are you picking?”
“Vampire.”
“Gideon’s stories transcend the genre with action, adventure, mystery, horror AND romance. Fun, fast-paced reads comparable in style to Dean Koontz.” (!)It don’t get much better than that!!
Take a bite out of MIDNIGHT SHADOWS! I’ll be back with another taste next weekend.

IWSG: Blog, blog, blog, blog, blog . . .

Our April 3rd question made me think waaaay back: How long have you been blogging? (Or on Facebook/ Twitter/ Instagram?) What do you like about it and how has it changed?
When I started out, there was no social media – in fact, were no computers! Authors made contact with readers via mailed mimeographed newsletters and by taking out ads/writing articles in one of the select few writing/romance-oriented magazines back in the early ‘80s/’90s such as ROMANTIC TIMES and AFFAIRE DE COUER. Then came the boon to self-promotion – the Internet! And what was once personal and friendly became faceless and demanding. It’s easier/quicker to write the book than promote it through all the varied avenues now available. And what choices modern authors have!!
My first website, designed by a professional media company along with one of my critique partners, was a labor (and I stress LABOR!) of love. I poured my heart and soul into that project with interactive sections and music videos and places to connect. I had a huge member list I thought of as friends rather than customers. And then it got hacked and I lost it. I have a replacement now that I’m proud of but I’m no longer sure that it has the reach that the newer types of social media do.
I have several group blogs that I participate in, which of course includes IWSG that also help increase reach and hopefully readership but it’s the more “personal” daily contact that I enjoyed building on Twitter. But those two also outgrew the personal touch that I preferred to become regimented by rules and strict guidelines . . . and, alas hackers, again. Sigh . . .
Facebook was my first toe in modern social waters. And I LOVED it. I still do. My personal and my professional pages update friends and readers quickly and efficiently and keep me in touch with those both near and far.
Instagram has never been a tool I’ve used. I’m not a modern girl with a selfie stick on her cell phone to document every adventure and every meal. And my nails are too long to text all my news as it happens. Another lost opportunity . . . sigh!
Thanks for letting me ramble on! Now, off to see your responses.
Happy Spring!

The life of Florentine noble, Luigio Rodmini—a life that instead of ending after an expected number of years, continued with new names in new cities. In the early 1800’s he surfaced in London, wedding Arabella Howland, the daughter of an acclaimed physician. He was then Louis Radman. As his surname changed to Radouix and his residence to France, Arabella bore him a daughter, Nicole. As Louis Radcliffe, he appeared in New York near the Turn-of-the-Century, living with his grandmother, Bella, who was his most likely wheelchair-bound and aged wife. After her death, he married Cassandra Alexander, heiress to a newspaper empire. They disappeared in Europe, their businesses handled by proxy. His daughter, Nicole wed a French expatriate and lived with their daughter, Fredrica, on the island of Martinique. Then, more silence as the family seemed to vanish, from print, at least, until wealthy eccentric, Louis Redman set himself up in Seattle.
How could Rodmini and Redman be one in the same?
How could they not be given all the evidence before her?
I loved writing this book because it’s got a bit of everything I like to read: A paranormal love story, a Who-Done-It mystery with Frankenscience ethics, sneaky government ops, and a return of characters and complications I adored from previous books (You don’t have to have read them to appreciate them here) along with an unexpected extra – a new hero by the name of Frank Cobb. I couldn’t wait to give him his own story. And then there’s that almost otherworldly nighttime world in a setting that’s almost another character—Seattle—the dreamy site of my first romance writers’ conference waaaay way back. All this for only $0.99 through the end of the month!
After this fantastic sale, I’m back to updating (not rewriting!) the books in my By Moonlight series that I’ve gotten the rights back to. Talk about walking in two very different worlds. Vampires or Shapeshifters – which is your favorite?
I plan to spend the rest of this quixotic sunny-to-cold-to-who-knows-what of an early spring weekend visiting your excerpts before the cats start yowling for their second trip into the great outdoors (need a few more degrees and a little less snow, but try telling them that!).
I’m skipping next weekend’s WeWriWa to celebrate the holiday since many of you may be traveling. Sooooo, Happy Easter and Early Spring! And . . . Write On, fellow Warriors!!

WeWriWa: Heaven and Hell – TEXAS DESTINY

Curling up in my pjs under the covers in the middle of the day with a cat or two and a book takes some of the misery out of being down with a spring cold. Such has been my week. Dragging around the house, toting a box of tissues, unable to look beyond the next minute without feeling impossibly exhausted, living off diet 7-Up and the relief of escape in my Bass Texas series. Okay, it hasn’t been ALL bad.
I’m on book two of the series – TEXAS DESTINY, which features Jack Bass, Harmon’s nephew, as hero and all-around good guy who is followed by a legacy of secrets no one is willing to share. He’s a true Western hero, a Texas Ranger, a good friend to all until he rescues his idolized captain’s wife who was captured by the Apaches years ago and thought to be dead. . . and uncovers the secret she must leave behind if she’s to return to the man she married but never loved. Love was something Emily Marcus discovered in the gentle care of Jack Bass as he returns her to the life . . . and man she fears. Here’s a sneak peek . . .

Wounded and left for dead after an Apache attack, Texas Ranger Jack Bass is rescued by Emily Marcus, the beautiful wife of his commander, who had long ago been abducted and forced to live among the Apache. The Excerpt
I’ll admit, this wasn’t my usual romance. In TEXAS DESTINY I had a younger hero and a married heroine with a past, so I had to tread carefully by making them as honorable as possible . . . and therein lies the tension and the eventual SIGH of a well-deserved happily ever after.
It was Heaven and Hell.
The woman in his arms was everything Jack desired. She was strong, brave, sweet spirited, and beautiful. Her touch made everything inside him all hot and fluid, like the spring waters at Boquillas. She was the kind of woman a man looked for all his life, and if he was lucky enough to find her, he was smart enough to never let her go.
Most of his fellow rangers were happy with the solitary life. They were content to roll themselves in a blanket under the stars eat their meals out of a tin and wash when they started scaring game away. They had no dreams beyond the moment, and most didn’t care if the future lasted fifty years or fifty minutes. But Jack wasn’t like them. He’d come from a solid family background. He’d seen the love between his mother and Will, between his uncle and Amanda. He’d held his baby brothers and sister in his arms and had known right then that he wanted children of his own. He wanted the vision Harmon had given him years ago—looking out over land of his own, a wife and kids beside him, a table to sit at and the satisfaction of belonging. Heaven was finding the woman to make that dream come true.
Hell was having her belong to someone else.
Hopefully, I’ll be getting this series out in a new package later this year, so you can fall in love again, or, if you haven’t read them, fall in love like it was the first time.
Happy Reading!!!
