Winter Booklovers Contest!!

It’s not a Winter Wonderland quite yet, but you can get in the spirit of the season—you know, curling up with a good book while the weather outside is frightful—by participating in the Night Owl Reviews Winter Booklovers Contest.

Night Owl Reviews Event
Gift cards galore are up for grabs, ranging from $25 to $100!! All you need to do is enter—and maybe discover a few new books and authors in the process! It’s a win/win!
I’m one of the sponsoring authors with my new dark paranormal release, REMEMBERED BY MOONLIGHT:

Where was Max?

Had she expected it to be easy having him here so close and yet so agonizingly far away? Bad enough watching him in that antiseptic clinic cell, a prisoner of his own panicked madness, raving, raging, out of control. Worse was having him here in the lush, sexy surroundings he’d built for them to share, temptingly near yet impossible to reach.

A bargain made in heartbreak hell.

Though she might be tortured by cherished memories, he was not. She was nothing to him but a protective port in his emotional storm. And that knowledge was driven home like a stake through the heart every time they were together. Every time he stared at her through those cool green eyes without the slightest flicker of response. Every time he took that distancing step back to evade the casual graze of her hand. Every time he lay next to her in the night and silence created a force field of discomfort.

Tripping over him every minute of the damned day only emphasized how much she wanted, needed him back.

And underlined how far away he was.

Winners will be announced on December 11 during a chat with the authors. So enter now, and browse through the awesome sponsor books. Nothing to buy, no complicated hoops to jump through. Just our way of saying “Happy Holidays to Come, and Happy Reading!”

IWSG: The Voices in My Head

I glance at the clock.

3:45 a.m.

Cursing Daylight Savings, I try to go back to sleep. Just two more hours. Is that too much to ask after grueling weeks of non-stop editing, blogging and proofreading on top of my full time job? But it’s too late and I know it, because my mind is already drifting—not toward that desired sleep. The voices begin. I recognize them. Just whispers at first from those who’ve been part of my every waking hour for the last few months as we worked together toward Release Day in mid-October. Then a scene begins to unfold, rolling like 35mm film, filled with action and passion. Not one of the many that I’d been tweaking and polishing in that frantic race to meet deadline. But something new.

Something from the next book.

I try to ignore them. I’m SO not ready. Still in the middle of a blog tour, just having finished a fun and frantic week on my Haunted Open House, all I want to do was NOT think, NOT plot, NOT listen to those murmurs of dialog. Just a week or two of blissful decompression. I have tons of mental and physical housecleaning to do that’s been piling up during the scramble to produce my first self-published book, REMEMBERED BY MOONLIGHT. I don’t want to get sucked into the next project, but those greedy, persistent characters won’t leave me alone.

Even as I roll over and grumble to my pesty felines that their breakfast is not imminent, the conversation picks up again between characters old . . . and new. I close my eyes and listen, letting it play out, teasing up images to go with the words. And then I can’t sleep. I’m up, heading for my desk, turning on the computer, anxious for it to boot up so I can commit that dialog to page before it escapes me. Not even waiting for coffee!

Smiling, I reread the scene, nod, then head for the Keurig instead of the sheets.

Whether I like it or not, whether I’m ready or not, the new project has just begun.

While I’m busy sketching out an outline for that next book, here’s a glimpse of the nagging scene that got me started writing my new release, REMEMBERED BY MOONLIGHT:

20 Questions: Meet Christine Allen-Riley

Getting to Know Your Favorite (or soon to be Favorite!) Writer

When I look back at times spent with author Christine Allen-Riley, I see moments of fun and frenzy. Always on the move, always in full blown chaotic humor (even when fighting with the turn-style in a New York subway where we were trying to catch a ride for the sake of research. Who said New Yorkers weren’t friendly?). When I saw her post that her first young adult paranormal was coming out, I’ll admit it, I fangirled in anticipation of that same rollicking energy spilling onto the pages that I remembered from the snippets of her work she used to read during open critique. I love an engaging story. In fact, I’m writing this post early because EVENTIDE comes out the day before it goes live, and I’ll be too consumed with fantasy to dutifully tend to social media at that point.

To give you a glimpse of the author in the wild and crazy, she’s answered my 20 Questions. Enjoy them then buy EVENTIDE! You won’t regret it.

Getting to know you:

Party dress or blue jeans? Neither – bare feet and long hippie skirts.J

Spa day or gym workout? Spa day…I could use a foot and head massage right about now. Oooh, and a hot stone massage, too.

Broadway or museum? Broadway, baby! I love live theatre – particularly musicals.

Five words you use to describe yourself? Distractible, Quirky, Creative, Nerdy, Late

Other creative outlets? All of them. Okay, not really, but sometimes, it seems like it. I love sewing, knitting, cross stitching, pottery (both the wheel and hand building) watercolor painting, making greeting cards, and other assorted geek crafting like making Weeping Angels and cosplay items. My friends and cousins and I even have Pinterest Parties once a month where we make some of the stuff we’ve pinned on Pinterest.

What music are you listening to? (While you write?) While I’m writing, I really prefer instrumentals (unless I have a specific playlist for a specific book) so there’s a lot of Circa Paleo and Clocks and Clouds. When I’m not writing and I want to get my sing-a-long on, I listen to Walk Off the Earth, Mumford and Sons, Rusted Root, Counting Crows, Damien Rice and a ton of others.

What’s on your Bucket List? Going to Wales, England, Scotland and Ireland. Seeing the Pacific Northwest. Going to Burning Man. Completing my concert bucket list (I love live music, and there are a ton of performers I’d like to see, yet.), have my aunt teach me to make silver jewelry.

Gourmet cook or take out? I can cook…but I don’t enjoy it. But we don’t do a lot of take out because it can be pricey and often unhealthy.

Something quirky about you that no one knows (we won’t tell anyone!) I only recently started wearing nail polish again. I stopped during my senior year in college because I was working on a cadaver that had on the same color I did and it weirded me out. But my niece insisted on painting my nails last summer, and now I’m addicted to nail polish.

The Written word:

Favorite genre to read? (Is it what you write?) Young Adult. I really love the genre, and I’m branching into writing it from my previous genre of steamy romance under a pen name.

What are you reading right now? Right now, I’m reading Sinner by Maggie Stiefvater, The Bride by Abigail Barnette aka Jenny Trout, Blackbirds by Chuck Wendig and re-reading Crossing to Avalon by Jean Shinoda Bolen.
Paperback or e-book? E-book all the way. I always have several books on the go – a couple fiction, some non-fiction, research, etc. and e-books make my life so much easier because everything is right in my purse on my iPad. I still love holding physical books and having them on my shelf, but as far as reading goes, bring on the e-books!
Favorite books you can read over and over? I don’t do a ton of re-reading, but I’d go with The Wild Wood by Charles deLint, The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater, Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Prachett.

A Writer’s Life:

OCD plotter or free range pantser? I’m as free range as they come. I have elaborate fantasies about being a plotter with an actual outline, but I don’t think it’ll ever happen.
Live to write or write to live? Day job? My day job is freelance editing which dovetails nicely with writing.

Do you have a set writing schedule? Nothing in my life is really on a schedule (despite many valiant efforts) but I do try to get it out of the way in the morning after my kids go to school. That way, there are fewer distractions, but that doesn’t always work, so I try to squeeze it in wherever I can.

Solo muse or critique partner(s)? I have some amazing critique partners that I wouldn’t trade for the world. We exchange chapters via email, and we will occasionally brainstorm together, too.

Biggest hurdle to getting words on the page and how you overcome it? Mostly, it’s all about time. My house is what could be described as controlled chaos. Even though there are only four of us, we’ve all got a lot going on, so I’ve had to learn to tune out distractions and also write whenever I can squeeze it in – even if it’s only 20 minutes or so.

What’s on your desk? A cat or three, rocks, books, candles, a couple small sculptures, more rocks, my laptop and either hot or iced tea.

When can we get your next book and what’s it all about? You can get my book right now. This very minute, in fact. J

It’s a paranormal YA about homicidal, soul-sucking faeries set in the wilds of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, called Eventide (Iron Falls, Book One)

About the Book
AmazonBarnes & Noble | Smashwords
The driver in a tragic car accident that killed her best friend, Devon Greer is consumed by guilt. When powerful hallucinations convince her that she’s seeing Rachael everywhere, Devon thinks she’s going crazy. But her friend isn’t truly gone.

To save Rachael from the faeries who stole her, Devon must pit herself against the Court of the Sidhe. Once she witnesses the true form of the fey, Devon’s life is in danger—and so are the lives of everyone she loves.

Now, Devon must not only protect herself, but also Jonah Seafort, Rachael’s cousin and the only person Devon can trust to help her. While the Sidhe walk among them, no one is safe.

Excerpt“That Abbott woman’s crazy as a bag of squirrels,” my dad muttered, shaking his head as I tightened my grip on the steering wheel and maneuvered around the older woman screaming obscenities into the forest on the edge of town.

I hadn’t driven since the accident, and I didn’t want to be driving now, but my dad had insisted that the longer I avoided it, the harder it would be later. So here I was, chauffeuring him around town and trying not to run over the resident whack-job.

As I approached one of the only three stoplights in the bustling metropolis of Iron Falls, my dad said, “Turn right. I want you to take Twenty-Eight home.”

I glanced at him as I braked, grateful that I had a red light’s worth of time to try to convince him that I wasn’t ready for that stretch of road.

Before I could even speak, he said, “Devon, I know you’re scared, but you need to do this.”

No, what I really needed was to go home and just pretend that the last few months had been a dream. But the light changed, and the honking horn behind me prodded me into motion. Almost on autopilot, I turned right, onto Highway Twenty-Eight. Calling it a highway seemed far too generous. It was a two-lane road through nothing but trees and the occasional mailbox that belonged to a house hidden from sight by the endless forest.

My hands slick on the wheel, I took the curves far slower than I ever would have four months ago. The truck behind me rode my bumper, making me even more nervous as I approached the accident site. I tapped my brakes, hoping whoever it was would back off. Instead, the truck whipped around me, passing with its horn blaring. I was pretty sure it was one of the guys from school. Great.

“Don’t let them get to you,” my dad said.

I thought of the people I went to school with and shrugged. It wasn’t like anyone’s opinion of me could get any lower. I rounded another curve and tried not to stare at the angry-looking skid marks on the pavement where the semi-truck had attempted to stop. For some reason, I hadn’t expected them to be so dark.

“You’re doing fine,” my dad murmured. He had the same tone he used on my little sister when she got hurt and was crying uncontrollably—weirdly sympathetic and exasperated at the same time.

I didn’t bother responding. There was nothing to say. I wasn’t doing fine. I was barely holding it together. A flash of pink on the side of the road caught my attention, and I glanced to the right. My stomach dropped to the floor, and jerking the car to the gravel shoulder, I slammed on the brakes.

“What the hell?” my dad snapped.

Rachael ran through the woods on the side of the road, her long, black hair flying like streamers in the wind. She wore the same pink tank top and jean shorts she’d had on the night of the accident. But the blood I couldn’t forget—even in my dreams—was gone. She kept glancing over her shoulder as if something was chasing her, terror etched on her face.

Ignoring my dad’s questions that were growing louder by the moment, I unbuckled my seatbelt and climbed out of the car to run after her. For a minute, I thought she looked at me. I thought she saw me. But by the time I rounded the hood, she’d vanished as if she’d never been there.

Release the Hounds – Literally! It’s Release Day for Remembered by Moonlight!

Some things are worth waiting for. And I’ve been waiting for this day for years – for the chance to put deliciously dangerous Shape-shifter clan leader Max Savoie and his fiery mate, NOPD detective Charlotte Caissie back into the spotlight with their own book! They’ve been waiting not so patiently for their happy ending. But that road to happily-ever-after has been a rocky one, and still has a twist or two to take.

Here it is – ready to read at last!

Amazon | Barnes & Noble

Max and Charlotte return to the “By Moonlight” world . . .
Fall in love all over again!

Because the road to Happily-Ever-After . . .

Clever, cool and preternaturally lethal, Max Savoie is leader of a secretive shape-shifter clan, heir to a mobster’s legacy, and the love of New Orleans’ top cop . . . but he can’t remember any of them. The only way to recover his memories, and his rightful place with the woman who risked all to save him, is to surrender to a mysterious visitor who holds the key to his tortuous past.

. . . Is Never Smooth.
After rescuing her mate from his ruthless captors in the North, hard-hitting Detective Charlotte Caissie is now painfully vulnerable—a stranger in his eyes—and in his bed. But the cost of saving their treasured future may mean sacrificing his past, while exposing the secret Cee Cee carries. Because the enemy they pursue . . . might be Max, himself.

To celebrate, my characters are partying like rock stars with a Release Day Blitz Blog Tour. Follow along for fun posts, interviews and other interesting tidbits about the doings in my “By Moonlight” world.

IWSG: Stepping Out on Faith

There comes a time when you have to put up or shut up. You’ve talked the talk, now walk the walk. Each journey begins with that first step, and when it comes to writing, no one can take it for you. The longer you think about it, the more difficult and scary it becomes. Staring at a blank page, signing up to meet an editor/agent, sending out your proposal, taking a class, agreeing to teach one. The obstacle isn’t your talent or your project, it’s you.

There comes a time when you have to just do it! Here are some tips to help make that all important first step easier:

1. Forget the old/what’s behind you – Don’t carry that old baggage with you. It’s heavy and there’s nothing in it that you need for this trip. Old “failures”, the comments your tenth grade English teacher made, those bad reviews, that harsh rejection, the mean critique. Start fresh, with new itineraries, new sights to see, with unbiased expectation. With excitement.

2. Boldly go toward uncertainty – No risk/No reward. You can’t be pushed into taking that first step. Be prepared, but don’t dwell on potential negatives. Think Indiana Jones stepping out with nothing to hold him up but faith. Don’t look down, but rather ahead.

3. Reach for your reward – Unless you stretch, unless you actively reach for it, desire will fade and dreams will go unfulfilled.

Have a nice trip! Don’t forget to write!

I’m stepping out on faith with my first self-published effort! REMEMBERED BY MOONLIGHT, the 9th book in my “By Moonlight” dark paranormal shape-shifter series will be available in print and e-formats October 13, 2014! You can take that step with me by signing up to participant my Buy The Book Blog Tours event. There are still a few open spots for hosts.

20 Questions with Author Rebekah R. Ganiere

I have a "thing" for fairytales! Look no farther than last week’s blog post accompanying the Fairy Tale Magic Hop for my reasons why. And I love discovering new authors who write what I enjoy. Ta Da! Meet Rebekah! I already knew of her enthusiasm for the paranormal genre through RWA’s FF&P loop, but the minute "One Click" brought the magic of her world to my iPad Kindle app, I realized something else: The woman knows her way around a fairytale! I’m devouring Red the Were Hunter and loving the way she can twist a familiar tale (and tail!). The second book in her Fairelle series, Snow the Vampire Slayer is waiting, crouching and ready to spring the minute it’s released, which is probably just as this post is getting uploaded. Pardon me while I sneak out . . . for a bite!

Lady Snow Gwyn is tired of playing "mother" to her seven Vampire Slaying brothers. For the past two years, she's yearned to be out there fighting at their side as they hunt for bloodsuckers in the black of night. Snow is as good a fighter as any man, but she wasn't called to be a Slayer. A mere formality in her book.

Prince Sageren, Son of Lothar has spent the last fifty years in exile, awaiting the day when he can finally avenge his family and take back his throne. Barely existing, he's forced to face his inner demons and the monster he once was, compelling him to vow to never drink from humans again. A simple enough task—until he crosses paths with a human who makes his fangs ache to drain her.

When Snow runs into Prince Sage on a late night trip to the woods, she's torn between the urge to kill him and the desire to succumb to the feeling he stirs within her. And when Snow's life is threatened by the same evil that murdered his family, Prince Sage must enlist the aid of Snow's brothers to not only help him save her life, but to also regain his rightful place as King of the Vampires.
If Sage can keep the Slayers from killing him first.

Run away. Run now. He wanted to scream. But he couldn’t. Drink her dry. Make her your own and you’ll never be alone again. He pounded on his skull. His gaze met hers and he suddenly lost all reserve.
One moment he was inches away, the next he grabbed her braid and forced her body against his, crushing her lips with his own. His tongue plunged deep into her mouth. She stiffened at his touch initially, but then relaxed against him. He needed this.
Her supple body pressed against his, her curves sparking every inch of his skin to wake up and pay attention. Out of sheer will, he forced his fangs at bay. He wanted her all to himself at that moment. Just her. The feel of her lips on his lips. Her tongue danced and licked his with a palpable need. Her apparent lack of experience made Sage savor her all the more.
He was dangerously close to losing control. She pushed against him roughly and he let go. Her eyes widened before hardening. Quick as light, she swung to slap him, but he caught her wrist.
“You don’t want to do that, love. You’ll split your palm open again.”
“You had no right to kiss me.”
Need pounded through him, making his body quake. He let go of her wrist. “I didn’t see you protesting too much.”
“I…I…” Her mouth opened and closed several times, but no words formed.
His gaze trained on her throat. The pulsing vein and the thundering of her heartbeat called to him. He licked his lips.
He stepped forward, gripped her arms and locked his eyes with hers. Her pupils contracted and then flooded open.
“You will go straight to the cabin. You will get your things and you will run. Run ‘til you get safe in your bed. And when you wake up in the morning, you will remember nothing.”
Her eyes glazed over and he eased his grasp on her. She picked up her sword and ran. A minute later, the light in the cabin flickered out and the door slammed. Sage didn’t dare let himself even breathe until he knew she’d gone, for fear that he would chase her down and ravish her.
When he no longer heard her footsteps, he fell to his knees and clutched the bloodied gauze she’d left behind. So long he had been in exile, underground. So long he’d denied himself the companionship of a woman. And here, in the middle of a glade, he’d found her. His heart’s desire was a human. What the hell was he going to do now?

A Writer’s Life:

OCD plotter or free range pantser? I am Free Range All the way!! However I have to plot at least a small outline.

Which is easier, the synopsis or the book? Are you kidding? Synopses Suck! LOL! That's why writers do them last!

How many submissions did you send out before publication? Not many. I don't like rejection so after a handful of rejections from Agents I switched to Editors and started getting offers almost immediately on two of my books.

First person you call when you get a sale? My Hubby J Then my crit partner and friend Katanie Duarte

When can we get your next book and what’s it all about?

The next books coming out are Reign of the Vampires – The Society Book One releasing Nov. 17 through Lyrical Kensington. It is a Dystopian Paranormal Romance, where vampires rule the world, told from the Point of View of the only female coven Lord in the US. Danika Chekov and her supposed human slave Mason.

The first novella in my Fairelle Series is coming out December 3rd. And is the first novella about Snow's brother Jamen. All of her brothers will have their own novella. Jamen finds himself face to face with his childhood sweetheart, and the girl whose heart he broke three years prior. Only she's now engaged to be married, despite her still burning flame for Jamen.

Rebekah is an award winning author. Her novel Dead Awakenings , debuted in January 2014. Red the Were Hunter , the first in her Farielle Series, released in May. The second book Snow the Vampire Slayer was released September 22, 2014. And her trilogy The Society will be released Nov. 17th 2014 by Kensington's Lyrical Press.

Rebekah is the VP of Communications of the RWA FFP Chapter as well as a member of her local Los Angeles and Orange County chapters. In her spare time when she isn't writing you can find her moderating on Savvy Authors or hanging out with her husband, four children and her English Bulldog, rabbit, two bearded dragons, and two tortoises. The escaped snake has yet to be found.

Fairy Tale Magic Hop . . . and COVER REVEAL!

I’ve had a love affair with fairytales since my mother read them to me as a child. They contain everything I adore: adventure, fantasy, romance, suspense, life lessons, more than a few chills and sometimes the not so happy ending. I’ve never outgrown them. Hans Christian Andersen, Brothers Grimm, right down to Disney and new renderings on TV and movie screens, they had me at “Once upon a time . . .”

I credit the larger-than-life heroes, clever heroines, and often gruesome feats of daring do in my favorite bedtime stories for my love of paranormal romance—reading and writing them. Getting carried away into other realms where mythical and magical creatures roam—what’s not to love?! Even when they’re bad, to me, those guilty pleasures are oh so good. (Jeremy, Matt, Heath and Hugh, those roles may not have been Oscar-worthy, but I watch them over and over! Probably because of the leather!)

Behind my current dark paranormal “By Moonlight” shape-shifter series lurks the heart and soul of a fairytale: the Beauty and the Beast. My tortured preternatural hero Max Savoie is back in REMEMBERED BY MOONLIGHT (October 13, 2014!) as leader of a secretive clan and love of clever and courageous New Orleans detective Charlotte Caissie.

Because the road to Happily-Ever-After doesn’t always run smooth!
A fairytale come to life! Working with Patricia Lazarus at Lazarus Art, I got to find the hero I imagined from the very beginning when writing about Max Savoie.

REMEMBERED BY MOONLIGHT will be available October 13, 2014 in both print and e-versions. Check back for more details . . .

Feature Friday Block Party: Whetting the Appetite

A nibble. A tease. My favorite thing about eating out or a dinner party has always been the appetizers. Those quick, delicious samples that excite the taste buds and make the wait for the main course bearable. Too few make you cranky. Too many overstuff and leave no room for the meal. Just the right balance gives you something to whet anticipation while building the desire for more. Rather like the countdown to a book release.

REMEMBERED BY MOONLIGHT is just a month away (October 13!). Time to start serving appetizers.

For the next thirty days, I’ll be laying out savory, sweet and spicy samples for you to try as an introduction to the newest book in my dark paranormal shape-shifter series: Quotes, excerpts, reviews and especially the cover! Look for these yummy morsels on my Facebook author page, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+ and here on my blog. For an endless buffet, visit my fun and enthusiastic “Nancy Gideon by Moonlight” Goodreads group where they’ve been busy dishing up contests and tidbits. And keep an eye on my Event page here because I’m going to be serving it up regularly, especially once my Buy the Book Tours Blog Tour begins on October 6. Watch for a sign up if you’d like to participate.

As a good host, let me offer something to get your palate tingling . . .

You’re my everything, Charlotte. There is nothing but emptiness before you, nothing but promise from this moment on. Fill my days and nights. Be the heart that beats in my chest, the hope that builds in my spirit, the dreams that stir my soul.– Max Savoie, Remembered by Moonlight

Also, be watching for LIFETIME INVESTMENT {writing as} Dana Ransom, my third contemporary reissue from BellBridge Books coming later this month.

From my buffet table, here’s one of my favorite appetizers:

Using a shooter glass (I use plastic!), fill the bottom with dip or dressing (my new crush is guacamole ranch!) then fill with vegetable strips (celery-with leaves is a nice touch, colorful peppers, zucchini, yellow squash, carrots, cucumbers, etc.). I like to prepare a dozen or so to display around the veggie tray along with empty cups and selections of dressing so guests can build their own. Another delish variation is using shot glasses with cocktail sauce, tail-on cooked shrimp and celery leaves. Easy to tote and toss and attractive on the table.

Cover reveal, back blurb, book trailer, sneak peeks? What teases your anticipation of a new release?
