COVER REVEAL . . . and it’s Gorgeous! THE WIDOW WORE PLAID by Jenna Jaxon

Wow!!! Is this magnificent or what?! If covers alone sold books, this one should fly off the shelves (virtual and otherwise)! But as a reader and a fan, I can testify that this author never disappoints. So, as an extra treat, here are more deets on the latest from my friend, Jenna Jaxon and her fantastic Widow’s Club. (I’m currently in mourning since this it the last of the series . . . sniff!).
Pre-Order Now! Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo Books | iBooks | Google PlayPublished: December 28, 2021Length: 286 PagesAdd to Goodreads TBR→

The Battle of Waterloo made them widows, but each has found new happiness. And Jane, Lady John Tarkington, intends to keep her freedom, even if love—and one particular gentleman—are determined to claim her heart . . .
It is a truth rarely acknowledged—at least in public—that a wealthy widow is free to pursue a great many adventures. For two years, Jane has privately enjoyed her independence. Why should she remarry, even when the gentleman proposing is as wonderful as Gareth, Lord Kinellan? She entreats him never to ask her again. But as her Widows’ Club friends—now all joyfully remarried—gather at Castle Kinellan, Jane begins to wonder if stubbornness has led her to make a terrible mistake . . .
Kinellan needs a wife to give him an heir, and he wants that wife to be Jane. They are perfect together in every way, yet she continually refuses him. Just as he is on the point of convincing her, a series of accidents befall Gareth and point to an enemy in their midst. He has promised Jane a passionate future filled with devotion, but can he keep them both alive long enough to secure it?

ExcerptThrowing up his hands, he groaned and sagged against the wall, his banyan sliding half off him. “Have your way with me, woman. I surrender myself into your hands. Do with me what you will and I swear I will enjoy it.”
Panting, she stepped back from him, seeing the sculpted muscular form, strong arms, and dark eyes glazed with smoldering desire as if for the first time. This man wanted her, or had wanted her to be his wife for a long time. No one would ever make her feel this way again, mo matter how many lovers she might take. She could look for the rest of her life and not find a man as kind or generous or loving as he. And she had all but thrown his love away with both hands. The revelation devastated her and she hung her head.
“Jane?” Kinellan straightened, peering into her face.
Sobbing, she threw her arms around him, laying her head on his broad chest, the only place she wanted it to be. Tears pricked her eyes. The fast beat of his heart beneath her ear should have given comfort, but did not, for her own heart was tearing asunder. The trickle of tears became a flood.
“Darling.” He slipped his arms around her, cradling her close. “What is wrong?”
“I…I don’t want to leave.”
“Sweetheart.” He cupped her chin and turned her face up to his. A thundery frown marred his brow. “Who has asked you to leave? Was it Aunt Prudence? Fiona?”
“N…no.” Jane sniffed, trying to blink back the tears and regain her composure.
“Someone else?” His frown grew darker.
She nodded. “You.”

Jenna Jaxon is a best-selling author of historical romance, writing in a variety of time periods because she believes that passion is timeless. She has been reading and writing historical romance since she was a teenager. A romantic herself, Jenna has always loved a dark side to the genre, a twist, suspense, a surprise. She tries to incorporate all of these elements into her own stories.
She lives in Virginia with her family and a small menagerie of pets--including two vocal cats, one almost silent cat, two curious bunnies, and a Shar-pei beagle mix named Frenchie.Whew! I can’t wait. Meet you in the One Click line . . . (actually, I’ve already been there!)
Happy Reading and don’t blame me if you can’t put this one down!

WeWriWa: Love that lasts beyond a lifetime . . . Happy Halloween!

Halloween . . . a paranormal author’s playground! What to share? Werewolves? Ghosts? Ghoulies? For this October 31st, I’m going Old School vampire with the series that opened a whole new (other) world for my writing. Today, I’m sinking my teeth into my Touched by Midnight series that not only earned my place on bestseller lists and garnered awards, but introduced me to a hero too delicious not to transport to new eras, new lives, and new loves in search of one that will last his eternal lifetime. In this taste from Midnight Surrender, meet Louis Radman . . . by any other name, one of them being vampire!
Movement brought her frightened gaze up. She shrank against the unyielding bars, small sounds of terror escaping her with each labored breath.
A lone figure approached from out of the icy clouds. A face, familiar yet unlike any she’d seen before. Pale as the wisps of mist. With eyes like fiery coals.
“Do not be afraid.”
Yet when he spoke that soothing sentiment, two monstrous teeth were exposed: sharp, animal-like fangs tinged with crimson. Cassie tried to scream, but the noise suffocated in her horror-constricted throat.
“I will not harm you.”
(and the rest of the scene . . . for those who dare . . .)
He reached out a slender hand, the gesture an offer of aid, not threat. It cupped beneath her elbow just as the strength in her legs gave way, and he held her up without effort. She was aware of her own fear, of how it fluttered about a heart gone mad, but was helpless to act upon it even as he placed his other hand gently against the tangled disarray of her blond hair. His touch was cold, so cold it made her tremble.
Then the shock of the situation overcame her. Consciousness gave way before a numbing swoon. And just as she sank into its embrace, she felt his hand pass across her eyes and heard the low croon of his voice.
“Remember nothing.”

My Midnight series broke all sorts of rules as one of the very first in the rising paranormal romance genre. It featured an unheard-of continuing storyline that carried over into multiple books with the same characters, following a hero who, because of his immortality, was fated to have and leave behind multiple lives and loves. Midnight Surrender was one of my favorites to write as it dealt with my original dream profession of journalism, my second favorite city of New York, and the cutting-edge excitement of a new century. Hope you’ll sink your teeth in and enjoy!!
And, just for fun, see how well you know this scary holiday by taking these spooktacular quizzes. My horror buff son and I only missed one between us!

Be sure to stop in on my blog tomorrow. I’m featuring fellow WeWriWa pal, Jenna Jaxon’s new cover reveal. Hint: It’s gorgeous!!
Happy Haunted Holiday!!

WeWriWa: The Worst Part of the Job . . .

We all have those things we just hate to do. We put them off until the last minute, try to pass them on to someone else to make it their responsibility, ignore them and hope they’ll go away. But sometimes we have to just buckle down and get it done because if we don’t, no one will. That’s where my hero is in my new romantic suspense. As a Texas Ranger, he’s had to deliver his share of heartrending news . . . but this time it’s worse. It’s personal.
Zayn studied the list as he got back into his car, hating like hell to have to return to his friend without something, anything, to go on. All the names were familiar, a generational echo of the families he’d gone to school with at his pseudo-niece’s age. None of them spiked alarm on his professional radar, but that didn’t prevent it from kindling in his belly.
He knew these people. Good, hard-working folks who paid their taxes, tended their yards and their children, and gave him and his professional brethren no reason for concern. They didn’t have criminal records beyond a few DUIs and traffic citations.
They didn’t abduct young girls.
But Zayn grew very afraid that someone had. If someone had taken Lenna Lupan during that school trip, the clock ticking down on his chances of finding her alive was in motion.
How could he share that knowledge with his best friend’s sister?

Having a loved one go missing has got to be the worst feeling ever. I remember when I used a royalty check to take my family to Disney World when my boys were young. It was our first big trip and their first time on an airplane. Of course, you try to cram everything you can into each day but my youngest, then still in single digits, only wanted to go back to the hotel pool to swim (Hey, we’re from Michigan and left 34-degrees at home!). So, just as we were about to go to the next Epcot exhibit, he was just . . . gone. All those worst-case scenarios went through my head – the kind that give parents nightmares. And then we spotted him, hiding, watching us to see what we’d do. Ignoring my need to wring his neck for scaring the stuff out of us on purpose, I told my now ex and my older son to just go on to the next exhibit while I waited, out of sight for brat boy to get worried and come running after us. Which he did. Busted! Oh, we went back to the hotel all right but not to the pool. He spent the rest of the day under hotel room arrest while the other two enjoyed that Mayan temple water slide. Of course, being a mom means dealing out punishment that you have to suffer, too. In this case, worth it!
On my most recent adventure, I found traveling with two other adults alleviates those petty problems (well, most of the time). But almost four weeks in Ireland, most of it spent under one roof, can make for short tempers even amongst the best of friends. Fortunately, we had some fabulous touring around the Dingle Peninsula to take our minds off petty issues. (Note the Sleeping Giant out in the background!)

On my first big out of the States adventure, I was WOWed by the scenery (and the jewelry stores!) And it doesn’t hurt to spend four days in Dublin in a place that looks like they have Ghostbusters on speed dial! This place even had lighted chandeliers hanging from the trees outside!!

But now, it’s back to the reality of a home office that desperately needs cleaning, pets to feed, and a new book that just won’t write itself! And excerpts to read! I can’t wait to get caught up on what you’re doing!

WeWriWa: When Inspiration Strikes. . . A new addition to my ‘Cowboys and Lawmen’ series

Home again and back at the keyboard with a new WeWriWa post. One of the best things from my three-week Irish adventure was coming up with a new romantic suspense idea for my “Cowboys and Lawmen” series (tried for one set in Ireland but maybe it was “too soon!”). Talk about an unexpected pot of gold that has me over 80 pages in already. Here’s a taste . . .
Grabbing a clean shirt from his backseat where he kept a change of clothes out of habit and necessity, Zayn was buttoning it when one of the neighbors, who had a daughter the same age as Ela’s, raced up the drive, breathing heavily from the exertion . . . and, he sensed, from fear. Seeing her, Ela came outside, casting an expectant glance up and down the street, but before she could ask her question, the puffing woman wheezed, “Has Lenna come home?”
“Not yet.” Ela stiffened like a hare beneath the circling shadow of a hawk. “I thought she was riding with you and Dee?”
“We waited and waited at the school, but no one had seen her.”
Both men flanked the frozen figure, Lu gently pressing his sister’s shoulder. She shrugged it off, rejecting comfort in her alarm.
“Where’s my daughter?” Ela demanded, chest compressing to crush her shaky words. “Where’s my little girl?”
Maybe it was touring around the wild Irish coast that got me thinking about the rugged isolation of West Texas where every hint of shade hosts something that bites, stings or tears. Or maybe it was the thorny greenery surrounding our side patio.

The best thing about traveling with fellow writers was dedicated time set aside to actually WRITE! Each of us had a separate room, one on the first floor and two up above, each with a desk! As if they had writers in mind! Especially when you have a local energy bar to keep you going.

While away, I did take time to raise a glass (or two or ten) to my American colleagues who were sound asleep during the height of my day. Here’s to you – Slainte!

And here's a little bit of an early Halloween Treat! Midnight Shadows (Touched by Midnight - Book 7) is on sale for $0.99 from October 1st to October 15th!

WeWriWa: WRITE WHERE YOU’RE PLANTED

Greetings from the Emerald Isle. Hope you’re following my adventures on Facebook. Edging into week two of three in Ireland and LOVING IT! After a two-hour drive to Chicago O’Hare, a hectic juggle to get through the International check in, and losing one of my carry-ons, my two travel companions and I spent a sleepless overnight flight listening to a screaming baby and watching the virtual plane icon cross the Atlantic. Greeted by an empty airport in Dublin and cold fog, an overstuffed cab ride to our hotel began not a day of recovery but one of exploration with friends who endured the long flight without loosing their senses of humor and adventure. Because that’s what friends do for one another. Now, two such friends who’ve grown up in vastly different backgrounds while cementing a three decades-spanning friendship are growing nicely where I’ve planted them at my little desk under the eaves of my temporary home in Ballyferriter, Ireland.
Hope you enjoy this snippet from my new romantic suspense.
The sound of his engine brought a shadow across the screened doorway, where it lingered until his vehicle pulled up behind an ancient aqua convertible and stopped. As Zayn dipped to exit the car, it wasn’t until he straightened and removed his hat, that the cautious figure stepped out onto the porch to call out, “Here as badge or brother?”
“A bit of both. Mind if I step in outta the sun?”
“Best be doing it before the neighbors see you and think I’m hanging with shady characters.”
Zayn gave a hearty laugh and took the steps in long legged strides to embrace the slighter man. “Was in the neighborhood,” he began.
His friend slapped his back and shoved away, laughing. “And smelled dinner. C’mon inside before somebody takes a shot at you thinking you’re here to check their papers.”
Three writer pals soaking up the lush countryside and fantastic accents over pints of Guinness. What better way to encourage creativity?

Slainte! (from the Guinness plant with writer/travelers Laurie Kuna and Loralee Lillibridge).

IWSG: Defining Success as a Writer

Butt in chair, hands on keys.
It’s that simple and that difficult. After thirty years as a published author, I’ve found the only constant requirement of being a successful writer is showing up. That’s the only thing we have complete control over. If we don’t show up to get the job done, day after day, week after week, no one else is going to do it for us. Words and stories don’t write themselves.
Some days, the last place you want to be is at the keyboard, especially if those words don’t come easily . . . if at all. When we get a rejection, a bad review, have an important life event (like your second child!), we can ignore that blinking cursor and take a much-needed temporary break, but we just can’t stay away. Those words are always circling, looking for a chance to land. And they won’t be ignored for long.
Being a writer isn’t just about the words that go into our books. It’s creating the promo package, doing the events, setting up a blog post (like this one), giving a speech, taking research notes, and all those other “wordy” things that come along with the job. Even if we’re not actively writing down those plots and conversations, they’re stirring in that creative brain pan, story ingredients thickening into a creative roux until ready to pour out onto the screen.
Here’s to being that successful writer!

WeWriWa . . . Welcome Home

I’ve always espoused the belief that home is where the heart is. The door is always open, and a place set at the table, whether you’re related or not. That’s what keeps Texas Ranger Zayn Bass returning to the place few would care to visit in this week’s excerpt from my new work in progress.
The sight of a Texas Ranger vehicle rolling down the narrow streets of Lajitas made those standing out on front stoops instinctively slip inside, doors slapping shut behind them.
Sergeant Zayn Bass didn’t take it personally. He’d had his share of indiscretions with his best friend before they’d reached legal drinking age that sent them high-tailing it too. More from parental retribution in their case than that long arm of the law.
Some would call Nathan Lupan’s home squalor. Zayn called Heaven on Earth for the loving family it housed, as he had none to speak of. They’d always welcomed him like one of their own. Even now, with him wearing a Ranger star and living in the city, anytime he was within a half day’s drive, he’d be expected at their supper table. And he happily complied.
Friends hold a special place in my heart as I’m frantically test packing for a dream trip that’s less than two weeks away. Traveling by plane, train, and automobile for the better part of a day and overnight in close quarters with a heap of luggage wedged between you can part the Red Seas of friendship. But I have no qualms when it comes to two of my critique partner besties as we ready to hunker down for three weeks in a rented house on the Dingle coast overlooking the picture-perfect town of Ballyferriter, Ireland. Squeeee!

With passport, COVID dox and Euros in hand, I’ll be storming Dublin for two days, pub, distillery, and tourist trap list in hand, with these two Emerald Isle veterans before training and cabbing our way across country to our home away from home. I CAN WAIT! Tons of pictures to come . . . One of my plans includes a daily quarantine at the desk in my upstairs bedroom where I can look across pastoral fields toward this jaw-dropping view (where they filmed scenes from the last Star Wars movie, BTW!). Oh, and I plan to get the first draft of the novel excerpted above well in hand, too.

All for now. Must visit each of you before returning to the task of stuffing everything I own into a carry on and backpack for a trial run. I know, it’s a tough job . . . but I so thrilled to be doing it after three delays!
Happy Writing, fellow Warriors!

WeWriWa . . . Time to RISE! RISE BY MOONLIGHT S*A*L*E!!

WeWriWa . . . Time to RISE! RISE BY MOONLIGHT S*A*L*E!!

 Weekend Writing Warriors

I LOVE a sale! Clothes, shoes, makeup, groceries, oil changes and even cat litter (especially cat litter!), lower the price and you’ll catch my attention. The same with books . . . all books, any books. And I especially love to reduce the price on my own backlist to get them out in front of new readers (and old!). Soooo, Ta Dah! RISE BY MOONLIGHT, the concluding chapter in my “By Moonlight” shapeshifter series is ON SALE for only $0.99 from now until August 26. Reduced price not quite enough to entice you? How about a taste to whet the appetite . . .?
“Mama, what’s wrong with me?” that small voice sobbed.
The rocker continued to complain as she stroked the child’s black hair. Her tender gesture failed to calm either boy or the man he’d become.
“Nothing’s wrong with you, Max. You’re perfect. They just don’t understand, so they fear you. That’s why you must be careful to never let them see the truth.”
“What truth?” the child pleaded. “Mama, tell me!”
Low and soft, Max repeated from where he watched, decades away, “Mama, tell me.”
(and the rest . . .)
She brushed a kiss across the top of the child’s flushed brow then slowly straightened, turning toward Max Savoie, a surreal voyeur from the future she’d never see. Her gaze swam with tears like liquid silver before flaring bright, then hot.
Then red.
“Max,” she crooned, “you’re just like me.”

She’s the ProtectorA fiercely determined NOPD detective, Charlotte Caissie has sworn to defend her beloved city and her unborn child from both criminals and otherworldly factions at war. While standing boldly at the side of her mate/husband, secrets from the past return to shake the foundation of her beliefs.
They have a ProblemWalking a marital tight rope between opposite worlds, Max and Cee Cee’s paths place truth and trust at odds when outside threats force enemies to become allies. The time to take a stand for their family and their future is at hand. Time to rise together for the survival of all they love!
“Every delicious word Nancy Gideon puts on the page exhilarates with a sensuous ferocity. Hopelessly addicted.” —Darynda Jones, NY Times Bestselling Author
Do you have to read the previous books to enjoy RISE BY MOONLIGHT? No (but I won’t discourage you from doing so!). Though previous events are referred to, think of them as more of a teaser than a roadblock.
Ta Dah, again! I’ve got a BRAND NEW website!! My virtual assistant (who is much cleverer at such things than I am) is still doing some tweaking, but I’d love to see what you think of the new “Nancy Gideon by Any Other Name.”
More GREAT NEWS! I just got the rights back to all but the first three books of the “By Moonlight” series (publisher wouldn’t let them go . . . sigh!) and will be reissuing Books 4-8! Can’t wait to reread them all to get my Max and CeeCee fix.
At the moment, I’m across the state taking care of one of my critique partners who hurt her back and leg in a fall. (PSA: Don’t hyperextend to adjust your blinds at bedtime!). Bonus – we’ve been busy working on our plans for our Ireland trip next month with one of our other writing pals. Building my muscles up for wheelchair pushing (as needed) up and down the hill from our cozy house to our little Dingle Peninsula village (Probably to visit one of the pubs! It’s Ireland – more pubs than restaurants!).
For now, it’s SALE promos and packing lists to keep me out of trouble. And some front porch rocking followed by Acorn TV.

Happy Summer, fellow Warriors!!

WWeWriWa: Just Say NO!!

Sorry to be MIA so much this summer. It’s been hard finding computer time at my desk and even now, I’m posting from the home of one of my friends who just got out of the hospital. Just call me Nurse Ratched! But I’m back at the keyboard with my new WIP to finally continue from my last post.
While the two smaller girls huddled close together, arms about each other and heads bowed, the third stepped closer to the vehicle, the hood of her jacket obscuring her face as she called out, “No harm done, Mister.”
“Well, that sure’s a relief.” He turned toward the driver, wiry red hair twisting like brambles beneath clasp of his ballcap as he hollered, “Ain’t it, Paulie?”With raindrops pelting against rusty metal obscuring the reply, he turned back, toothy smile flashing as he guessed, “You must be heading to the Rez. Your people are probably wondering where you’re at out in weather bad as this. We’s going that way, so least we can do is give you a ride.”
When the smaller of the shivering twosome took a step forward, the other gripped her tight, holding her in place as she wordless shook her head. Older and wiser, her eyes reflected caution after hearing too many warnings to trust the grinning white man.
A pushed-up sleeve revealing a poorly inked Celtic cross tattoo and a date too faded to read beneath it, the passenger’s smile grew impossibly wider. “C’mon, now, you’re fixing to freeze or damned near drown before you get half as far as you need to go and just wouldn’t feel right driving off all nice and warm whilst you be shivering. We done dropped off our load so there’s plenty of room for you to climb in back.”
I’m holding my breath. How ‘bout you.
Why so busy? I’m in the process of revamping my very dated blog/web site. Ta Da! I hated to let the old one go but this platform offers so much more. Take some time to look around and tell me how you like it. Still some tweaking and finalizing to do but my virtual assistant has performed an Olympian task shaking off the dust for this squeaky new reveal.
And speaking of Olympics . . . You go, USA! So proud of our team and all the work it took for them to get to Tokyo (a year late!) with such determination and grit. Talk about prime-time TV. I’ve been glued to the screen, yelling as if they can hear me (Maybe they could! I did get some odd looks from the neighbors!). Weekend Writing Warriors Now, it’s time to get ready to Go Green! My Ireland trip is just a month away and I’m practicing my packing. Can’t wait to post from Dublin and Ballyferriter!
Slainte!

Our Insecure Writers Support Group question for August is: What is your favorite writing craft book?
Hmmmmm . . . When I first published in the ‘80s the only writing book I had was an outdated Fiction Writers Market that I used to research publishers for submission for my first two hand typed manuscripts. That first effort came winging back . . . but the second found a home with Zebra/Kensington where I happily published over the first of three decades. I’d never owned or read a book on HOW to write, I just wrote the stories that filled my imagination and poured out on the page. I’d sold a half-dozen novels before I spoke at a writers’ group and discovered that there were “rules” to novel writing beyond my handy Thesaurus and “How Things Work” dictionary. Who knew?!

As an English/Journalism/History graduate, I’d been doing the basics without having to label them by a particular name or process. The only guidelines I ever followed were grammatical and those imposed by a particular publisher. The research I did wasn’t on how to structure a novel, it was to find the factual details to hang my story upon. I let the tale tell itself. I didn’t learn those pieces and parts had names like Story Arc, Hero’s Journey, and Black Moment until after I’d successfully sold and traditionally published over thirty-some books. And after starting my 71st novel, I’m just too old a dog to learn new ways to do what has worked for me for decades.

After saying all of the above, I would NEVER tell another writer that my way is the only way. It works for me because I’d absorbed the basics through education, fabulous editors, and an overactive imagination. There is always room for improvement in our craft. My weakness is on the technical side since I wasn’t raised in the electronic era. I still have plenty to learn and will never stop doing so.

Kudos to those who realize they can achieve a higher level by putting a few more tools in their writing tool kit. And a HUGE thank you to those who provide that information and assistance (a big shout out here to my virtual assistant who’s recrafting my blog!)
